It was suggested by the former Pink Floyd manager that all broadband users should pay £24 per year to help pay the artists as people were downloading music and films illegally and for free.
That wouldn't go down well with me as I've never downloaded anything and I can't see me doing so either. If I want something, I'll buy it.
But if it's such a big problem and people do this all the time, why do they put the music on the net in the first place? wouldn't it be better for everybody if you could only buy music in shops? or at least a secure site.
He suggested that most people's ipods were full of illegal music, "Hold on" says Jeremy, what if they've recorded the content from their own cd collection? "still illegal" says the record man, in the UK it's illegal to record your own cds! I didn't know that, did you?
While I'm on my soapbox, " and maybe force alcohol manufacturers to place warning labels on the bottle" is this another example of ridiculous British law?
Does the government really think drunk teenagers are going to read the small print on the bottle and take any notice?

Not according to a record industry copyright bloke on Radio 4 last week, when he dismissed the old "home taping is killing music" argument.
The problem that record companies are having is that when the music is in a digital form it can be put on the internet and 'shared' - so anyone can download any music for free, if they know where to look.
Ultimately this is because years ago the record company insisted on selling us CDs whether we wanted them or not. If they'd stuck to vinyl it wouldn't be quite so easy to copy stuff and music would still feel like a proper thing you own rather than just another file on your computer. |

Re recording your own music is still a grey area I believe and I the last I heard they were about to change it so that you were able to do so legally.
It's crazy I know, almost like saying you can only play a record on one record player........

Yes, whilst listening to Steve's show this afternoon I realised they were talking about shareware sites.. just shows what I know about it!
but even so, why can't the music have a "non copy code" thingy if placed on the net or maybe the service provider could automatically render the link (?) useless.
There have been some pictures I would have copied from Ebay for my own use ( no, not those pictures...  ) but they have an anti-copy protection system...

Got to be honest, I'm a bit old fashioned.
I like to have a CD case and all the bumpf that goes with it.
I know I could download stuff, but if I get something new, I like to sit in comfort, listen to it and read the sleeve notes or whatever they are called these days. It's interesting to read who is playing on the stuff.
So no, the idea of me paying any extra money to compensate for those that don't pay any at all, really wouldn't go down well with me either. Not unless the payment comes with discount vouchers to spend at HMV!! lol |
