I am working on a project at the moment finding out what theme was used to introduce and close programmes on the Light Programme and Radio 2. In latter years of course many programmes opened up with just a jingle and no main theme. But so many of our DJ's did have a regular theme tune.
For example Jimmy Young used "Town Talk" by Ken Woodman and His Piccadilly Brass. One of the tunes Terry Wogan used was a piece by Brass Incorporated called "Just Like That". Brass Incorporated also did a version of Brian Fahey's "At The Sign Of The Swinging Cymbal" for Alan Freeman's "Pick Of The Pops". Sam Costa and his daily lunchtime show "Accent On Melody" used "Dress Rehearsal" by Carlos Diernhammer... and so I go on!!
If you would like a copy of the list I am putting together then please drop me a line at: malcyb2000@yahoo.co.uk
You may have something you can add to it. It is still very much work in progress at the moment but it is coming on in leaps and bounds.

Thanks malcyb. I've e-mailed you for a list.

There are some tunes and jingles accessible from the Radio 2 Timeline page http://www.r2ok.co.uk/R2_timeline.htm

You probably know these tunes:

There's a Jimmy Young clip which might be the one you refer to as 'Town Talk' :

http://www.r2ok.co.uk/jyoung10am2.mp3

and there's this one that was used by Parky for Late Night Extra :

http://www.r2ok.co.uk/parkyLNE69.wav

and his famous Sunday Supplement theme which was also used on TV, don't know it's name but I'm sure you do :

http://www.r2ok.co.uk/1998Parky3.mp3

and here's one used by Pete Murray on 'Open House' the name of the tune I don't know :

http://www.r2ok.co.uk/openhouse2.mp3

and let me add George Martin's 'Theme One' which kicked off the station in 1967 :

http://www.r2ok.co.uk/themeone.wav

I have many jingles but they are in the main jingles, not tunes, I'll check them out.

Thanks John.
Brian Fahey composed the Pete Murray theme and actually called it "Open House". It can be found on the EMI second Sound Gallery CD.
Parky's theme was composed and originally performed by Harry Stoneham. It was titled "Michael's Theme".
The list is winging it's way to you!

What was the theme to Waggoners Walk? And can it be still heard anywhere on the net?

The theme to Waggoner's Walk was called "Bees & Honey" by Jon Snow.
I don't think anyone has uploaded it anywhere.

Just heard Calling All Workers On Desmond Carrington tonight, which of course was the theme for Music While You Work.

Don't forget With A Song In My Heart from 2 way Family Favourites.

Even as a kid, I used to love the theme music to the radio programme Merry Go Round?? I think it was on a Sunday evening.

Hi SanteFe,

I think that was the Carousel Waltz. My Mum always listened to it so I heard as well!

If it was the programme about current films on at the flicks then that was Movie-Go-Round and indeed The Carousel Waltz was it's theme tune.

Hallo there!

Have come back from holiday and seen this.

Here are a few:

Housewives' Choice--In Party Mood by Jack Strachey.

Children's Favourites--Puffing Billy by Edward White.

Top of the Form--Marching Strings by Ray Martin.

Grand Hotel--part of the Johann Strauss Waltz Roses from the South.

Melodies for You--early days, Melody in F by Rubinstein--later on, third movement from Beethoven's Symphony no 7.

Music from Scarborough--opening of Schubert's Serenade.

David Jacobs--Samantha (from the film High Society).

There will be lots more. I wouldn't mind seeing your list and shall email for a copy.

Ian.

Going way back, (and I mean really way back before we had a TV and I had to watch at a neighbours) there used to be a programme called something like "In Town Tonight". At the end someone used to say in impeccable BBC tones "Carry on London". What was the tune that introduced that show, anyone?

The piece of music was the Knightsbridge March, from Eric Coates' London Suite.

Not really theme tunes but the late great Ray Moore regularly used the
Mike Leander Orchestra version of The Beatles " Here there and everywhere" and Ray Coniff's " For all we know" to which Ray always
used to comment " the sound of a hundred tape recorders being switched on" just as the intro began. Magical days.
