I remember the first time I ever saw a Dragon Fly at Junior school.. it frightened the life out of me and I still stay clear of them Laughing - not that they really bother humans.
Some people describe them as beautiful but I don't see why... beautiful by design yes, but not for looks!

It was after my apple pie... Smile

I've not seen one that big ever... it was about 3" long ... I couldn't get anything in the shot to give it a size reference.. It had been dive-bombing me in the garden earlier....

Hi Angus

Thanks Smile ... just snaps really..... yep camera is a Canon EOS 350D

The Dragonfly.. I've checked it out on the British Dragonfly Society ( yeah really there is such an organisation) website..

It's a Southern Hawker (Aeshna juncea) .. quite common around these parts apparently.

Dragon flies have never been common in our garden despite the fair-sized pond, but the smaller similar Damsel flies are seen often, some beautiful colours :

Hi John,

that's more like it , the cute little blue ones. I like those. There was always zillions of them around the ponds where I used to work. We would sit out at lunchtime watching them and the fish while eating our sarnies.

Nice picture too.
