Hi,

There's so many threads on the Coffee Bar (some interesting ones have got forgotten) I was thinking of a tidy up so we can more readily 'see' more of the threads in the coffee bar.

Some suggestions:

1. We have a Quiz Zone. I thought we could re-name it Quiz & Trivia zone, and we could then move to there some popular things like the Film&TV Connection, Mallets Mallet and other threads where folks are asking trivia-type questions or asking for opinions etc. Anyone like that idea?

2. There is some argumentative trash there which I could archive. I'll ask contributors if they approve archiving silly arguments involving ex-members....

3. Now we've archived the Fantasy Schedule board I suppose there is room for a new board (Sports Board! Sports Board! Sports Board! I hear) Well looking down all the Coffee Bar thread titles I'm trying to look for other trends that might justify a separate board to move things to. Yes there's sport-related, but also TV-related, Lifestyle, Health etc Not sure anything that justifies a separate board, but.....

Maybe members could look at the Coffee Bar and come up with some ideas, I'd be pleased to hear about them!

Hello, John

Just to let you know your plea for suggestions has not gone ignored. I've composed and shelved a response at least twice and will submit when I'm happy with it, but I've run out of time! See you later.

Hello John,

Yeah a Coffee Bar tidy up would be great. There’s lots of old stuff in there. I like the idea of a Quiz and Trivia- Zone, a comedy zone might work too, and would give readers a clue that the posts in there are at least intended to be funny.

The thing with forums is that – there is a forum out there for everything- whatever you can think of – there’s a forum for it, so why would anyone need a diverse forum? Well the other thing with forums is that after a while in one,you feel at home in a particular forum,( you like the look, the feel, the people and the general bonhomie of it all) and like being at home you can have conversations which veer off in all sorts of different directions, often unrelated not just to the subject thread but to the fundamental ethos of the forum. That is where many forums fall over with over zealous moderation in a Dalek like “Stay on Topic- You will obey” kind of way. It all gets a bit like wearing a straitjacket and a gag – but enough about Tuesday nights…

We could have a sport board, they do tend to be a bit rowdy at times though- all that testosterone, beer and sweat, Man U wins again and before you know it , the Jukebox is out the window..

The problem with diversity on forums is that it makes attracting new members more difficult – faced with a daunting array; a multithreaded complex cornucopia of threads on everyday life, it’s difficult to see where you may fit in. A bit like, a Lions’ Den.
So a balance is required.

To recap in a slightly clearer version.

Quiz and Trivia- good idea
Comedy Zone- maybe
General Stuff- Shoe talk, shopping and shades of other things. – maybe
Sport- no sharp instruments and plastic glasses- maybe

Hi John,

Maybe you could make a general entertainment section. For example instead of having theatre, books, etc you could perhaps have it all in one section, this could then be used also for films & tv as well.

In view of the sport forum, I don't really mind either way if there is one or not. If you don't really fancy have a section just for sport how about something like lifestyle, heatlh, fitness and sports, this might attract a broader range of 'customer'

Just a couple of suggestions, I'll go along with whatever you decide.

Well I agree with all your points John.

It's just nice to have someone in an admin position who is approachable and flexible.

Keep up the good work, you certainly R2OcK! (Did you see what I did there?!)

Very Happy

You could try a Sports section, to see if more discussion will be stimulated there. There has been very little up to now - personally, I feel that we get so much of it rammed down our senses from TV, radio and newspapers that there's very little new, interesting or pertinent that can be added, unless it's going to be funny, and that can frequently stray into negative territory.

You could reorganise the Music, Theatre and Books sections into one for Home Entertainment (Music, TV/DVD, Books, Radio topics outside the specific Radio 2 ones) and one for Going Out (Theatre, cinema, restaurants and pubs).

Just looking at what has been discussed in the Coffee Bar recently, that would have left about ten threads with posts in the last month, not counting the two parlour games so, tempting though it is to move those I wouldn't at the moment. The Coffee Bar is, I think, the first port of call for many, and its varied, informal and non-specialised range of topics is an attraction, so long as there remains enough of them. If you move the games you might stop people going into the Coffee Bar.

(I look in every nook and cranny, but I know from comments which are sometimes made on other forums that not everyone else does).

Whatever you decide, I'm sure I'll be happy.

Well, we had a poll and though not many voted it didn't get a resounding support.

Hmm, something taking shape here possibly...

That makes me wonder how other folks use the forum. For me, I get the index page from a IE pull-down list and then immediately click 'View posts since last visit', there's always something in the coffee bar (as well as the trivia threads) so I don't omit the coffee bar, later on I might browse the main boards for older threads that might need posting on again.

Yes, I can't remember now how I voted, but I was thinking more of those who did really want it - a trial would prove them right, or wrong, and, as ever, if I had something worthwhile to add or contribute, I would.

I would still like to see a Sports section and a section on Films.

By the way I endorse Angus's comments on JW-very good that we can have a sensible discussion on this.

Hi,

Following up on the Polls we had a while back.

Last month I created the Sports Bar and moved what sport-related threads I could find.

Today I've renamed the Quiz Zonen the Quiz and Trivia Zone and moved quite a few threads to there from the Coffee Bar. A few old favourites have moved and a whole lot of forgotten (but entertaining) threads.

There were suggestions like putting Film, TV and Theatre together in an Entertainment Section or a Going Out and Staying In (TV)

Also something like a Not Radio 2 section for threads on other radio stations (there's quite a few of those).

I can try those ideas out? Nothing's permanent, only takes a few minutes, and can put everything back again easy, or change it all, if we decide.

Started to move threads about other radio stations to.......

What other radio do you listen to?

The homepage link to it is in the Rec section just above the new Sports Bar link

So on the homepage click either the title or the photo of....... SIMON BATES!

118 threads already!
