Elisabeth Mahoney The Guardian, Friday August 22 2008
Nick, a Radio 2 listener in Glasgow, was getting rather worried. "No matter what time I switch on," he told Richard Allinson, "I hear your voice." It's not surprising. Allison is regular holiday cover on the station: this week for Steve Wright, last week for Chris Evans. He's a well-liked presenter on the Radio 2 messageboards, and his name is mentioned whenever a key new slot comes up. And yet, once again this week, he has been the radio bridesmaid rather than the bride, with a high-profile show only temporarily his.
Listening yesterday, you could hear why he gets the cover. Drop him into any show, and Allinson is ultra-professional and smooth in a good way. He is warm and confident, but not brashly so, and doesn't attempt to take over the show in question. And yet, there's a nagging sense of what's missing: a witty sharpness, and some light and shade. Allinson's humour is easy-going and matey, but nothing more, and he overdoes (weak) laughs through rhetorical questions. Hearing from a listener who works for Walkers and mentions Gary Lineker, Allinson quipped, "Does he cry all the time? No, I didn't think so." It does the job, but hardly sparkles.

Did you miss that last bit Mark?
I'll agree, Richard Allinson is easy to listen to, very safe and harmless, but it is more like Radio Bedtime.
Come back Steve, you're needed! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

A surprisingly spot-on review, that. Allinson is perfectly competent but there's no doubt there's a sparkle missing. |

And 6 music, but I won't hold my breath. She isn't exactly noted for listening to her audience, A gander at the 6 music message boards (Feedback) will show this. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I would agree with that too, Alice seems a very likeable lad and he knows a lot about music, etc but he is just too 'safe' |

Yup, I'm definitely with you on the Allinson debate, Mark. His Saturday afternoon show made for perfect company when ever I was pottering/recovering/ironing/getting ready/pretending to work during my days as a student :p
I understand where Elizabeth Mahoney was coming from in her article but in an age where we're bombarded with 'personality' in the form of Evans and Ross, etc, it's nice to have a reprieve listening to someone who really seems to connect with the audience (well he connects with me anyway... perhaps its a shared bad sense of humour ) and can take you on a lighthearted journey mixed with a good taste of music.
Nick.
P.S: Not that I'm frowning on Chris and Jonathan...I enjoy their shows too...especially Ross...to be frank, there's no-one on Radio 2 that I wouldn't listen to except for Russell Brand... I like the mix. Difference works remember, well, apparently |

I must eat some humble pie here and say I thought Richard was really good sitting in for Ken Bruce this week and his show was waaaaay better than Kens, who really sounds like an older man desperately trying to be hip.
I know Gary Bones was still the producer but the music seemed to have a bit more variety than Kens show.
At work we play a game where we each pick either Coldplay, Keane, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams,Travis or Enrique Iglesias and whoever picks the one that Ken plays first has to make the tea. It never fails to work!!!!!!! |
