Above-inflation price rises for rail tickets have come under attack from rail groups and opposition politicians.
Many areas' regulated fares, which include season tickets, have risen by 4.3% - about 1% above inflation - but some unregulated fares are up by 7.3%.

Yep. It is an outrage. The fares in London have been flying into loony land.
To go one stop on the tube in central London costs more than a cab fare! And they say they are tryin to encourage people to use public transport!
Thankfully, I work in the burbs, but even so the cost of my travel card has risen steadily |

Yep, so they quoted £234 return London-Edinburgh. A return flight EDI-STN wouldn't be anywhere near that much and the Stansted Express train is reasonably cheap, so where's the incentive to take the train from Edinburgh to London? No wonder people either drive or fly.
If HMG was really concerned about making UK plc climate conscious, it would re-nationalise all public transport in this country, subsidise journeys properly, ensure maintenance wasn't left in the hands of private contractors and make travel on trains and buses much more attractive propositions. Of course we all know that won't happen, they'll just keep tinkering with the existing tenders and tax poorer motorists off the roads.

I'm quite keen on looking into doing longer trips by coach--especially after I turn 60 next year and can benefit from cheaper fares!

I agree with previous comment about renationalising transport, its never been any good privatised...!  |

It's the British way, make it more expensive on the trains so less will use them.
If they made it cheaper, more would use them wouldn't they?

Yep! you are right.
Rail fares in the UK are two thirds more than in most European countries.
I had some relations from the States visiting couple of years back, & they were shocked at the fares on public transport. And that was before they went up hugely in the last couple of years
Why does the UK have to have the most expensive & worst transport system anywhere in the developed world? |

The last time I travelled by train was about ten years ago - Newcastle to Kings Cross on the overnight run, arriving in London at around 0430 or so. The carriages were scruffy, staff non-existent and there was a fight on the next carriage which then spilled over into mine just before arriving in the City.
Needless to say, I flew home. Nowadays, I drive everywhere since public transport is either non-existent to the places I want to go to, or too expensive or even dangerous to use. When the government start cracking down on us motorists, I'll end up cutting back on other things to save the money - the car will be sold as a last resort!

You have my sympathy. I once got the late train back to Newcastle from King's Cross and a fight broke out which led to the police being called and a passenger being ejected. But all that palaver made us over an hour late getting into Newcastle.

Hi Ian,
If you are thinking of using the coach, look at the funfares -about a month in advance of when you want to travel. I went from London to Newcastle earlier this year for - £1.00.  I made the return journey for - £1.00. Worth taking a little bit longer on the coach!  |
