Yesterday, missus and I popped into Toll Bar End Park where there's four big shop units including PC World and Curry's....

the car park has been invaded by about 50 travellers' caravans

Of course, the usual garbage strewn everywhere, gangs of under-10 kids running around, loads of kids bikes lying on their sides, I'd say half the 500-space car park is unusable by customers, loads of security guys in the stores Rolling Eyes

What to do about travellers?

I'm sure there's a site for them in nearby Leics. and a troupe recently occupied land near a govmt. minister's house near Stratford.

Confused

My knowledge and memory is hazy but I thought that every local unitary authority had an obligation to provide (a site) for travellers, notwithstanding the natural NIMBY reaction of anyone who lives within a mile of it.

Public car parks such as shopping centres and park & ride plots are difficult to defend against such gatherings. On the business park where my wife works one of the companies left its car park gate open one weekend and everyone turned up on Monday morning to find some uninvited guests in their favourite spot. She certainly made sure she was in good time to catch the bus all that week until they were evicted.

The thing with travellers is, there are two types; the ones who are proper travellers, they move around in small groups and generally keep out of every one else’s way, keep themselves to themselves and just get on with things in the simple bucolic idle that is their way of life. They are lovely people.

Then there’s the other kind, the people who don’t want to be part of the society we enjoy but nor do they want to be apart from it. Not really travellers, just a social underclass unwilling to join in wholly with our way of life – happy enough to quote and use the law and the benefit system to its full extent when it favours them but pay scant regard to it when it doesn’t. These people aren’t travellers at all- they are just anarchic parasites feeding on and poisoning the blood of our society with a crime ridden trail of filth and destruction everywhere they go.
