Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 was discussing The Licence Fee how people are getting bombarded with threatening letters from the BBC Licence Company. I didn't realise it sounded that bad.
Most of us do own a TV and should pay if so, but was hearing that if you use the I Player on your PC to Watch for example BBC News and Have a Mobile Phone to watch TV, you need a TV licence. This is crazy when these other types of ways to watch TV havn't been added to the TV licence
I personally think it's very outdated and should be changed?

It should not be changed, it should be scrapped!
Those adverts were so patronising, I hate them (I do pay my licence fee by the way) |

You need a licence if you own a piece of equipment that is capable of receiving a television signal in the UK. So Yes!! |

So you want to buy a licence fee for every mobile phone in the family? A family of 4 would cost about £600.
The licence fee is on borrowed time. It has no future, long term _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

You only need one Licence for the household. If for instance you need a licence if you live in a shared house as your counted as a Unit, so I was told years and years ago. |

So you would fee comfortable with being stopped in the street and asked if you had a licence for your phone? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Noel Tidybeard has had his say, I agree with him apart from the last sentance.
Presenter Noel Edmonds has admitted that he does not have a TV licence live on breakfast television.
Despite starting his career on BBC television the presenter says he is boycotting the fee as he does not like the broadcaster's 'threatening'manner towards those who evade the charge.
And he says he is waiting for the detector vans to come and find him.
The 59-year-old told BBC Breakfast News presenters Charlie Stayt and Suzanna Reid that he cancelled his licence months ago.
He said: 'Auntie's put boxing gloves on. I'm so incensed by the idea that I'm guilty of something that I actually cancelled my licence fee a few months ago,' he said.
'They haven't found me, and nobody's come knocking on the door.'
The former BBC Radio 1 breakfast DJ and host of BBC TV shows such as Noel's House Party, said there was now 'an aggressive culture' in the UK.
'There are too many organisations - and the BBC is a fabulous organisation - that seem to think it's OK to badger, hector and threaten people.
'I worked for the BBC for thirty years. When I was at the BBC, it promoted the licence fee by saying how wonderful it was because - let's face it - the BBC licence fee is astonishing value.' |

I once got a visit from a TV License Inspector; I had just bought my first place and didn't want a TV. Found out there is a Statutory right of entry for them to check for equipment, so let them in. It's assumed that every registered Electoral house has a TV. Oh how I laughed |

What, you don't think it's good value?
I'm more than happy with it, but not too happy about what they do with it though.. some outlays are disgraceful in my opinion.
But, I much prefer the licence scheme if it means no annoying adverts!! it seems every time I flick through the channels - there's adverts on!
I'm sure there's more of them and for longer too.
Thinking about it, I suppose the threats for non-payers are a little over the top along with the car tax ads but on the other hand, why let these people think they can get away with it? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Question. Is the army of inspectors, letter writers, and administrators self funding? Do they recover more in fees than it costs to recover them? If it does - great! If it doesn't- what proportion of the fees that are paid is spent on trying to recover fees that aren't? |

The Beeb contracts it out - http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/aboutus/index.jsp
According to the 2007/8 accounts that cost £123million; the licence fee income itself was £3,243million _________________ Ron |

Thanks Ron...
A sub question.
What proportion of the £123 million is spent on getting the non payers to cough up , and what proportion of the £3,243 million is from people who wouldn't have paid without having been stalked? Is it cost effective?

That, they don't say.
Isn't Capita the same organisation that collects the Congestion Charge for London?
In which case it probably isn't cost-effective, but they will be determined to extract their pound of flesh, even if it costs an arm and a leg. _________________ Ron |

I've had an idea. I don't have many and this is a one finger typed idea. What if we scrapped the TV Licence Fee in favour of an equivelent amount in % terms added as VAT onto Electricity Bills. You can't (very easily) watch TV without electricity, so nobody escapes. On top of that the infrastructure for collecting the fees already exists, the infrastructure for paying money back to those who get free TV licences at the moment- already exists - the winter fuel allowance could be increased to refund the licence fee to the people over 75 etc etc .. so this Capita crowd could all be given the heave ho and we save £125 million, we make loads of extra TV cash because nobody can easily evade payment, and think of the trees we'd be saving - all those licences, all those nasty letters no longer required. The Beeb get more cash to make programmes with.....bingo! |
