Before Terry mentions CIN on Monday Rolling Eyes I'm going to listen to planet rock in the mornings from now on, utterly sick of his ramblings.

Maybe I should change m name to 'untoggy' or 'detogged' Laughing

But CIN is surely a cause worth mentioning.

It does seem to be in excess though.. and I agree that other charities undoubtedly suffer as a result.
I wonder if the final sum raised will be down this year?

The auction really gets on my nerves. The sums of money involved are far too much for any normal person who tunes in. They somewhat offensively shove "more affordable" items on at the end of the week. It should be held online for the rich elite to purchase their little jolly trips out rather than polluting the airwaves for a week. I have no issues with the charity but am sick of hearing it all week on R2.

It is a worthy case I'm not saying it isn't but there is really no need to mention it every five minutes.

The auction does grate at little ( well a lot actually) but it is for a good cause. I'd prefer the selling price for the auction items to be decided in advance of the auction- with bidders not bidding but guessing the amount set for each item- guess correctly - that's how much you pay and you get the prize. That would allow ordinary everyday normal people to join in, especially if the selling price was a random number between £1 and say £5000.

I like what they're doing with Doctor Who this year - up to 20 phone calls per number, and a random pick of winners. Should raise plenty of money without causing much resentment towards the winners.

They tried to get me to go to the charity do that Wogan did on Thursday but I wasn't particularly keen on the £100 ticket price. I'm sure it was lovely though...

If you want to support Children In Need buy the Pudseys from ASDA. They're rather nice Wink

Yes, first hint of the forthcoming CIN was indeed made today. Currently 6 weeks away.

Remember Steve Wright's campaign a few years ago, "Kick Christmas back into December?"

It was one of the few things I agreed with Sw about; pity we can't do the same with CIN and restrict it to a fortnight either side. After all, it's not exactly an unkonwn quantity now is it?

I do wonder how left out the night crew feel since the music marathon was chopped down to 12 hours with only the daytime shows involved. Wouldn't they have made more money for the cause when it was a 24 hr marathon and shows like Mark Radcliffe, Janice Long & Alex Lester were a part of it.

CIN week's about the only time I get up early, so I can listen to Alex before SK and the Togmeister start the wall-to-wall begging!

The auction should be run by text message.

£1 a go- winner selected at random.

Wogan has @ 8 million listeners.

Punters could win an amazing prize for a quid...and random selection means ANYONE stands a chance, not just the usual wealthy few who "win" every year.

Also, for example, the top whack paid out for an item is around quarter of a mil. (just a guesstimate, not a precise quote)

If just 25% of Tel's listeners texted in each day to have a go that amounts to £2 million! PER DAY...
That's £10 million raised just from the auction. Cool

As the saying goes, not rocket science etc, etc.... Rolling Eyes

Mark & Noddy's drunken voyage through the CIN requests in 2005 was probably the best radio this network has even seen Wink

And, of course, it was the inspiration for 'The Chain'.

The BBC has said it will 'tone down' the fundraising aspect of Children in Need because of the credit crunch.

Oh well there might be some good parts about the credit crunch then Laughing

I'll believe it when I see it though, it was in the sun after all, not exactly known for it's truthfulness.

I think this is a little extreme. If anything, 'Children in Need' shows the rest of the nation up - we're all worried about a 'pinch' when there are children living in poverty. I think the annual BBC guilt trip should be pushed out there as much as possible - it's a brilliant charity and people can still afford to donate - even if you drink one less pint on a night out and donate that money. I'm glad CIN has become a national institution and long may it continue.

Hmm, yes, returning from that soapbox now...

Nick.

Nor me-I am sick to death of CIN and Terry Wogan's involvement.

My wife and I contribute to other charities instead these days.

"'Children in Need' shows the rest of the nation up"

I don't think so, I think it shows how much FREE advertising and resources the BBC can make available to it.

What other charities could get TW, Eastenders etc etc to make trailers (adverts) for them, occupy a week on R2 etc, a whole evening on BBC1 , a cut from calendars for Countryfile , 'donations' from SCD calls etc etc all for FREE ?

As for the Auction of things most can't buy BUT have to listen to, and the follow ups ALL year as the DJs have a good time..it should be BANNED Evil or Very Mad

If the Cat's Protection League had £9million stashed away... I wonder if CIN has "spare" cash too? Confused

That sounds like a great idea to me. I like the CiN concept, one big charity with all the BBC's weight behind it, but the auction for millionaires does seem a bit tedious. Doing it this way would make it much more "inclusive", which I'd have thought would be a good thing for the BBC's image.

Oh well, Terry's back on Monday; it's been nice this week just getting the occasional mention of CIN with Johnnie.

Must remember to take some CD's with me next week!

Thankfully I shall be spared this year's event as I'm flying to Lithuania for a meeting of the European Harley-Davidson clubs. Jeez, the lengths I go to! Wink

I work for a Charity looking after elderly Altzheimer and Dementia sufferers and we would be ecstatic if we got 1% of what CiN raised. Still, who cares about the elderly when the Beeb can get a warm glow helping the kiddeees!

Anyway, if we really have children needing these millions every year then shouldn't the government be doing something?

Quite agree, Number Six. It also galls me that CIN is timed (I'm sure not deliberately) to coincide with the RBL's Poppy Appeal, surely the most worthwhile charity of all .

I'd be a lot happier about CIN if I saw more than a few vague references as to where all the money goes.

I think the bulk of the money raised goes to small local charities. I know that our local Home Start charity received some a few years ago. In fact someone from this charity said that they knew several local charities had applied for money from CIN and got it.

That's good. Home Start is a worthy cause, something I could have done with myself 25 years ago when my life temporarily fell apart.

Sorry, I'm still going to be an old curmudgeon, though. I firmly believe that one should not have to suffer being constantly badgered on a publicly owned radio station to give, give, give at the expense of other charities whjo don't have this facility, or star backing. It's not as if anyone is unaware of CIN, is it?
