Can't remember who has suggested showing two episodes of Fawlty Towers in Jonathan Ross' Friday slot.

Richard Allinson? How curious - I was expecting Lamarr or Dara O'Briain. If it's not Ross's company producing it, that doesn't bode well for Rossy's future...

I think they are playing safe Ian until the final outcome has been announced. Of course the others could have other commitments.

I suppose that Lamarr was otherwise engaged. Someone on the BBC board wondered if Allinson has a red phone that flashes every time he's needed. Very Happy

Personally, I hope Wossy returns swiftly. I like his Saturday show (and nobody is ever going to call me young) though I can see why others don't.

Bring back Gloria Hunniford. Never had this kind of behaviour in her day!

I suppose they are playing it safe until this has blown over? Personally a weeks suspension would send a bad message to the listeners? I think Ross should sit out until at least the new year and let this blow over?

It is always a sad day when someone puts himself or herself in a position where they have to resign. However, the BBC is an organisation that must, at all and any cost, retain its integrity, its reputation, and the trust its staff (past and present) has earned over many years. When an individual does something that brings the BBC into disrepute, the correct course of action is for that individual, to have respect for the integrity of the BBC, and resign. It must never be the case, that the BBC is forced to sack someone. That is just not cricket. Ross has made a second huge error of judgement, by not resigning. When you know that you're out , you should walk. He could come back after a suitable period had he resigned, but to be cast out, would leave him with a much longer and colder swim back to the warm waters of the BBC.

Richard is a good replacement for Saturday morning.

I don't think Ross' 'sacking' is as clear in our crystal balls as you would have it. There is still a lot of support for Jonathan in comparison to Russell and perhaps this is due to the accessibility of his comedy - Ross makes more people laugh than Brand (for whatever reason that you may like to analyse it). Ross has also garned a loyal and enthralled audience over the past ten years on Radio 2 that would miss him. His Friday night show also draws in not just viewers but an important window of publicity for the BBC due to the guests he attracts. The sacking of Jonathan Ross is not something the BBC should or will take lightly. That said, the corporation will feel the pressure to respond to this.

This is why I think it is perfectly reasonable for Ross to wait and see what the real fallout of this is before taking the matter into his own hands. Resigning will not help a situation that a lot of people are starting to describe as a 'storm in a teacup'...

How long did Johnnie Walker's suspension last for in the late 1990s, when Richard Allinson did his, then, Drivetime show. If I remember correctly, it lasted a matter of months before he returned to do his show.

Yes, and apart from all the other things you mention sacking Ross will leave large holes in the BBC's broadcasting hours, and potentially put hundreds more people out of work (eg the production staff he pays from his own pocket).

I disagree with that Nick. If Ross had resigned (and it’s too late to do that now) it would have said, “I’ve made the ultimate apology, there’s’ nothing more I can do” , then the BBC could have said , ok take a week or three away, then you can come back, matter closed, but to force the BBC to “do something” as it now surely must and will do, whatever that something is- won’t be enough for those people who want his head. (I’m not one of those BTW) All it does is make the story drag on.

Right. I have forced myself to listen to the youtube posting of this passage of what is supposed to be radio entertainment.

Jonathon Ross is a highly experienced broadcaster, paid an enormous sum of money to provide the world's best broadcasting company with quality entertainment. It was he who uttered the first, and main, abuse, he who recognised instantly that it was wrong, and apologised; he should have stopped the recording there and then, and flagged it to ensure it would not be used, rather than allowing Brand to whip himself up into his usual frenzy and carry on, aided and abetted by Ross himself, with four more calls to the answerphone over the next ten minutes.

Quite apart from the question as to how it got through the system that is supposed to exist to vet recordings before they are broadcast, the fact that such was sent to anyone's phone in the name of a BBC programme brings the BBC into disrepute, and I would have thought that there would have been a clause in both their contracts to enable termination in such a case. That being so, and having failed to take that immediate action, once the passage had been played to the public and picked up by the media, as he knew that it must be, he should have fallen on his sword, at the same time if not sooner than Brand.

As Rachel has said, Brand will now go to ground, will probably be safe to continue his stand-up act for whoever wants it, and, like several before him (eg Julian Clary) come back in a year or so, perhaps with a new haircut, and all will be forgiven. By sticking (and I can understand the reluctance to resign in the face of what some say is pure anti-BBC media pressure) JR has done himself no favours and his future is now out of his hands.

(I've run out of time - may edit this later)

There was, but I'm not sure if that's what caused the prolonged absence.

Yes indeed, sad to say in these troubled times there is indeed a silver lining. Richard is back on a Saturday - Crikey!! Yes, I know probably temporarily but I agree one weekend off for the idiot JR isn't enough contrition.

I hope this brings back the JR of old when his show was great fun to listen to and he didn't believe he could do / say what he wanted. And LD is gone too. Like I say....Silver Lining! Smile Smile Smile

Good news all round Very Happy

I would be sad to see JR's show go completely particularly the TV show. But I still think he is vastly overpaid for what he does out of Tax Payers money.

RockitRon's post is excellent and sums it up in my opinion.

I can't remember the sequence of what went on.

I do remember being in the TV/audio dept of a store and they had the radio on when it was announced he was coming back to R2 though. It made my day as you can imagine!

I'm not saying Richard isn't a fine a broadcaster. There has to be things put in place first, thats why the only option is to have him covering? Maybe for one week?

I hope the foolish listeners don't start and email him stupid comments about Jonathan Ross, vis versa when Alex Lester is covering on Saturday Evening. I tell you one thing they won't get a reaction?

As you say " It's safe to have the shows, run in a different way?

Here's hoping RA gets the Saturday morning gig full time-even after Ross's return from exile.

By Christmas time lets hope Ross will hopefully have been sacked.
