Yes I do enjoy their show, but my only regret was that it meant the death knell of some of the specialist music shows. I'm sure there could have been a way to avoid losing Nick Barraclough & Sounds Of The 70s, to name two.

I always enjoy their show, both for the music and their personalities .My only problem with it, is that it seems a waste to use two very good broadcasters in one show when there are so many other shows that could benefit from their talent e.g. Drivetime on which I thought Stuart did an excellent job and The Big Show which I always enjoy when Mark presents it.

I listened for about 3/4 of an hour this evening whilst I undercoated a door... yes, I think they're great together, they play an interesting mix of music and it's all very amusing too.
I like the music related headline stories such as Guns & Roses and The Specials tonight.. very funny! Laughing
It's just on a little late for me.. Sad wish they could take over Drivetime.

Both are accomplished solo presenters. Why not have one on between 2:00-5:00pm & the other between 5:00-7:00pm?

They're both decent enough presenters but not good enough for mainstream daytime shows - maybe as stand-ins now and again if RA wasn't available.

I've commented before about this but:

I think they produce brilliant radio together and are better in unison than when apart. However, I don't see mainstream shows as being the best way of showing off their talents. They simply wouldn't be able to put on their style of show in the daytime with the overhanging cloud of playlists and demographics spoiling their fun. I hope they keep the evening slot for many years to come.

Very true.

I remember MR on Radio 1 when his biggest beef was with the restrictive playlist, and let's face it, the R1 playlist is worse than R2's at any given time.

I'll never forget him cutting off Eminem's "Stan" about a minute into it with the words "Well if you haven't heard that by now you're never going to".

Priceless

I don't get to listen very often - the music is OK but I can't stand all the blethering in between, from either of them really, and The Chain is so 60s/70s BBC Local Radio.

Give me MR & SM "blathering" any day compared to Steve Wrong! He just loves the sound of his own voice. Rolling Eyes

They're a bit too "hard" for me. You know when guys have a couple of pints - they start talking louder and become less inhibited with their certainty of facts. Well, those two are like that- they're a wee bit like two blokes in a pub trying to impress the two women over there, but they come over as a tad anoraky music-wise, and mildy agressive in a blokey "macho-lite" kind of way. They're just too "backstreet pub" for me. Best to leave em where they are - I'm sure some women do like them but for me they're just not "women-friendly" enough for a day-time show.

Now you come to mention that, it's not so much 60s local radio that it puts me in mind of, but this...

We used to stay with my dad's brother for a few Christmases in the 60s. His son, my cousin, was a few years older than I, and the owner of a Philips tape recorder and an enviable collection of records, including all of the Beatles. He and his best mate would spend most of the time up in his room recording tracks and, between them, on mic, making up ridiculous stories and facts, each trying to outdo the other. They allowed me to hear the playback, but never to join in.

So, yes, it's a boy thing.

Wow, bit harsh! While I can see where you're coming from in your second post (in terms of pub blokes - which, unsurprisingly, is where they came up with the idea for this show, and our dearly departed controller, in one of her stronger moments, gave them the ok) but how do you define 'not good enough'?

The two presenters are great together and great apart. Remember - both have done their share of stand ins, particularly Stuart who stood in on Drivetime for months when Johnnie was undergoing treatment - that was hardly 'now and then' standing in. The ratings showed that he kept people listening and he certainly proved himself in that situation. Mark's done his bit too, and I know there are other threads dealing with the whole issue of duos presenting (eg Radcliffe and Tarbuck, Forbes etc).

I don't think they come across as anoraks; they're both knowledgable broadcasters. Has it come to the point where any sort of show like this with musical knowledge is deemed 'anoraky'? Mind you, after Lesley Douglas' unfortunate comments about 6 music and women listeners, I don't know what to make of it all!

For me, Radcliffe is enhanced by his partnership with Maconie - who lends a certain balance to Radcliffe's sometimes dogmatic persona.

Maconie, on the other hand, sometimes seems to come across as a an over exuberant puppy, trying to get his oar in before being drowned out by Radcliffe. I much preferred the calm, controlled, quirky Maconie that we used to hear on Drivetime and on Saturday afternoons. Maconie's credentials as a music journalist are sound, but, if the first time you ever listened to him was on this show, you would think he was just one step up from the stooge that Jonathon Ross has on his Saturday morning show.

I wouldn't go so far as to compare him with Ross's stooge but, as far as Drivetime relief is concerned, things have moved on a bound or two since the days of Johnnie Walker. He may not be universally loved, but Chris Evans has increased listener figures, so his leap-up-and-down-wave-your-knickers-in-the-air-and-shout-a-lot style must appeal. The contrast when Maconie stands in is just too, too... and I can imagine people falling asleep at the wheel while he's on.

I agree he does always sound as if he's busting a gut to get a word in around Radcliffe, and he doesn't really sound right there either. On his own, at a time when his knowledge, taste and style would be best appreciated. Presenters are rarely offered their old time-slots back, so Saturday afternoons are probably out; I don't suppose he would be interested in Janice Long's should it become available?

No no! Not harsh at all- just the way it is from where I sit; they really aren’t good enough for a daytime show on their own, or together. I don’t dislike them; now and again they display a smidgen of boyish charm but just not enough. My hubby on the other hand thinks they’re fab- so he listens to them quite a lot but when I listen to them it feels like I’m being “told off” all the time – their presentation style is age and gender limited, which is why they don’t and wouldn’t work during the day.

I can remember the Drivetime stand-in period all too well.

Nonsense. Just because Stuart has a different presenting personality to Chris, it doesn't necessarily mean that people will switch off when Chris takes one of his regular breaks (or with Allinson standing in). I don't believe that someone of Chris' personality should necessarily stand in while he's away - R2 obviously don't believe that either, and so they shouldn't. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see Danny Baker stand in one week and leave his mark - but can you see that happening? That's two big ego clashes!

You're implying that Maconie is boring when he stands in for Drivetime, in contrast to Chris. That's unfair. I certainly don't think Stuart has to up his game any more now that Chris is presenting and not Johnnie Walker - if anything, the gig's easier! Stuart is still a stand in for that show, so he must be doing something right. And I think that not copying Chris' act is certainly something right.

R & M would be a godsend at 5.00 - I've just had to turn Evans off after 7 minutes - I just cannot stand his "style" . Why does he have to shout all the time, and the "background" music is so loud it's absurd.
R & M are real broadcasters. Evans ain't Rolling Eyes
