Ron,

I heard Gabriella on with Simon Mayo a couple of weeks ago and they were discussing it!

I found Connie Francis on You Tube the next day but now can only find Connie Landers, and it's a different recording. Confused
Some of the words are slightly changed on Gabriella's version.

Hello H

Senior moment Rolling Eyes I'd searched youtube, that came up and I didn't really look beyond the first name!!!

The Hit Label project sounds as though it was a bit like Woolworth's Embassy label - low budget soudalikes of chart records - and Connie Sue Landers, who was a session singer in Nashville, was one of their signings.

I'm sure that someone will post Connie Francis' version on there before long - it can be found on The Singles Collection, under a fiver at Amazon.

Ron,

The interval of tonight's FNIMN features Connie Francis if you are interested. It starts with I'm Gonna Be Warm This Christmas.

I like The Waitresses song too, aswell as The Pogues, Slade and Wizard.
What about, Walking In The Air, Let It Snow, White Christmas, I Believe In Father Christmas etc etc etc.
How many times have you heard any of these this Christmas on Radio 2?
They just seem to have so many rules of what can't be played that it's becoming an unfunny joke

Have you enjoyed them all today then? There's been a fair few of them! Smile

No! Laughing Not a good start to the day when Terry played his own song yet AGAIN. Switched straight over to classic FM (heard some nice christmassy songs on there)

The final straw was when I put the radio on in the car driving home from work and Evans was playing wonderful Christmastime, grrr! Rolling Eyes

I enjoyed all I heard. Drummer Boy is a song I normally detest (can remember the Beverly Sisters version being played as a child.....awful!) but for some reason Tel's isn't annoying me as much!

Little Drummer Boy never has been a favourite of mine - not even Frank Sinatra could make it sound cool (in fact his version is one of the worst).

Speaking of which, a big raspberry to Radio 2 for refusing to play anything Christmassy from the Sinatra/Cole/Crosby era (Doris Day on Sarah's show was the earliest we got). Not even anything from the "young pretenders" - Diana Krall, Steve Tyrell, Harry Connick Jr.

Just for you Ron, and everyone else of course, the signature tune at the bottom of my posts today is "Here in my Heart by Al Martino" - the first ever Christmas No1 in the UK when the charts began. It was no.1 from 14th Nov.1952 for 9 weeks..... Smile

Morning Rach, a lovely song, very typical of its time, I remember it well (I lie - I was only seven/eight months old at the time Very Happy )

Al Martino is still performing and recording, at the age of 81. According to wiki, he dissuaded Mario Lanza (who always sounds a bit "heavy" for my liking) from recording that song, knowing that his version would have stood no chance of selling if he had.

This was played on Alex Lester's show this morning:

Title: It's Beginning To Look Like Christmas
Artist: Perry Como
Album: The Polar Express O.S.T. (Various Artists)
Label: Reprise

He must have been eavesdropping! Of course, the use of the track in an Asda commercial may have had something to do with it.

Most of Perry Como's Christmas recordings were either rather too cute or too schmaltzy, like his television shows (I remember the immortal line on one of those, delivered on a Hawaiian beach, dressed in what looked like pyjamas that were only marginally more awake than he was - "Trees - they grow here right out of the ground!").

I've sent a couple of suggestions for Lester's Library - but don't hold your breath.

Dean Martin's version of "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" is much better... as played on Gold the other day.
Apart from the yap, I like this DAB station..

Today I've plumped for the Harry Lime Theme- Anton Karas ( 1949- Christmas no1 in sheet music sales) Record Charts started in 1952- but don't quote me on that -there is some dispute, and I don't want to have to go back in time ( again)...

I've had a few hours in bed since I got up this morning ( not feeling too good) so a bonus track before I head back there........

I never saw a Como special but loved the Spitting Image spoof, that included the lines:

I'm dreaming of a TV special
Just like they give me every year.
I move in slow mo
My name's Perry Como
I'm at the end of my career.

I'm sitting in a Burbank studio,
'cause that's where the show is made.
The snow machine is going,
Yes it looks like it's snowing
Although it's mid July and 90 in the shade!

I don't know what is happening with the Christmas music at Radio 2 this year, but they are playing safe and missing a few off the list.

Mud - Lovely Christmas

Paul McCartney - We All Stand Together

Greg Lake - I Believe Father Christmas

John Lennon - Happy Christmas ( War Is Over )

Judy Garland - Have Yourself a little Merry Christmas

Eartha Kitt - Santa Baby

Elton John - Step Into Christmas

East 17 - Stay Another Day

Radio 2 are playing a lot of M Carey and Slade this year and not putting much effort into the music choice. I wonder if Lesley Douglas ran off with the 'Best of Christmas Album'. Laughing

Lovely Xmas-when I bought the original it was called Lonely This Xmas.

When did the change occur or have I got my wires crossed?

Had to chuckle at Mark's "Have Yourself a Little Merry Christmas" Laughing

Sarah is playing it as a Show Tune tomorrow, let's hope she gets the title right!

It was great to hear "Merry Christmas Darling" this morning. You really know it's Christmas with Carpenters seasonal records!

I've gone for something right up my street today - a non-human Christmas no1. Smile ( even if they did cheat to get it there- nothing wrong with a little commercial manipulation)....it's called sales, dear.

Terry played it after Roger Royle so that's twice today.

Jeremy played Brenda Lee and Jingle Bell Rocl , Bobby Helms (?) so there are 2 more 'oldies'.

Shocked Maybe your mate would be interested in this story that I was sent recently!!!

A Christmas Story
When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the Pre-Christmas pressure.

Then Mrs Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where.

Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.

Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drank all the cider and hidden the liquor. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom.

Just then the doorbell rang, and irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas tree.
The angel said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?'

And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

It wasn't that long ago when we used to hear "Christmas Rhapsody" on the Terry Wogan show each year. A lovely collection of Christmas tunes arranged by Henry Mancini and played by the National Philharmonic Orchestra from the movie "Santa Claus The Movie". But he hasn't played it since Paul died sadly.

I really hate the Spice Girls' version of Sleigh Ride - it sounds as if Mel C did all the main vocals and everyone else just chipped in with an apathetic 'dingalingaling, ding dong ding'. They had it on in Debenhams - yeuch!
