Crime levels are set to rise for the first time in more than a decade, according to a leaked Downing Street report that also predicts the prison population will jump by 25% in the next five years.

A slowdown in the economy is threatening to reverse recent falls in crime levels, The Sunday Times has reported.

Shadow home secretary David Davis said the report confirmed that there was a "massive shortage" in prison places.

Yet the Home Secretary in his Christmas message to the Police service says, "Overall crime numbers remain stable and increases in recorded robbery are slowing. There were 1.7 million fewer crimes than in 2001 and 5.8 million fewer than in 1997. Violent crime has reduced 34% since 1997 and 43% since 1995; and the risk of being a victim of crime is now 24%, compared with 27.5% in 2002 and 34.6% in 1997.
So that's allright then - it's all smoke and mirrors. You couldn't make that c..p up, could you?
Lies, damned lies, statistics and Dr(another lie) John Reid. Mad

He kept missing out the word 'reported' from his statement - "reported crimes". Nowadays many crimes go unreported, especially minor ones since many people realise that the police (who have limited resources) prioritise them as to whether an arrest will be likely. After being told once or twice, "well, there's nothing we can do about it", the victim of a minor crime will in all likelihood not bother telling the police next time around.

Typical politician response, though - throw figures at an argument as though they will impress people. I'm sure the 24% of people that will be the targets of crime this year (according to his figures) will be extremely happy that the rate has dropped 3.5% in four years. Rolling Eyes

We should be weary of 'leaked' documents and the suppositions of the right wing press.
