Pub Chain J D Weatherspoons are introducing a 99p Pint.

I don't think it's down to the pubs to tell people how much they should or shouldn't drink. There is enough about showing people the effect of drinking to much alcohol. |

If young people do want to drink, I think it's better they do so in a pub (not necessarily Wetherspoons) than on street corners with alcopops bought cheaply from supermarkets. To blame pubs (already under enough pressure) for binge culture is wrong. |

Exactly Ian, A pub is a controlled environment with bar staff who can refuse to serve a customer when they appear to be under age or seem to have had enough to drink. This doesn't happen in a supermarket as the drink is not consumed on the premises. Yes age can be challenged at the checkout, but might it not be better to have the off licence section completely separate from the main supermarket with a strict over 18 policy and it's own checkout which would make it easier to monitor who's buying booze. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

That's how it was 30 years ago if I remember. And at some time before that you only had off-licences. Should we go back to only buying alcohol in off-licences?
In some states in US you can only buy in the liquor store.
Trouble is here in UK that so many folk now drink wine at home we'd need an off-licence on every street corner

That might not be such a bad idea John. In Canada you can only buy alcohol in liquor stores, either 'The Beer Store' which I think is national government controlled or the LCBO which is proviincial government (Ontario in this case - the part of Canada I visit) I don't think you can buy alcohol anywhere else in Canada except a bar or restaurant. Certainly not in a supermarket. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |
