Did anyone catch the prog on BBC 1, 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?: Connie's Story.
I've not seen her in performance but she struck me as being a bit wet. Not exactly West End material? Anyone seen her in action, as it were?

I just happened to be in London in Nov while the Children in Need (I think that's the name of it) big television thing was on. She came on to sing Do Re Mi with the kids. She was ok--Mary Martin and Julie are hard acts to follow so I cut her some slack. I don't think she would inspire me to want to see the whole show--however I didn't see the reality show. The title of that show should have been a little longer--like maybe--
How do you solve a problem like Maria, Andrew Lloyd Webers desperate search for undiscovered talent and TV ratings! Wink

Hi OD <love your Betty avatar, by the way. Is it taken from Jezebel?>

I know what you mean about Julie Andrews being a hard act to follow - I think that's my trouble, I'm comparing Connie against her, which is a little unfair.
I only saw dribs and drabs of the reality show <ALW scares me> but it seemed to me from watching the doc, that she certainly wanted the part! If you didn't catch it, she also made reference to Mary Poppins, maybe she's considering re-working the entire Andrews back catalogue - with a little help from Andy? Wink

I've seen the show and can only say..... Save your money!

Connie mimes to a backing track through most of the performance, and when she did sing "live" she blew out twice!

All told, it's a pretty weak show- badly acted and sung- the only bright spot being Lesley Garrett, who is incredible.

She mimes to a backing track? How can that be? I can't believe that is allowed in theatre!! That actually makes me really disappointed in ALW for allowing someone to do a show and lip synch (spelling?)!!
Oh and Natasha--I believe my avatar is from Jezebel. Very Happy

ODonna,

'fraid so. I have been blessed with an ear for that sort of thing. Can always tell if someone is singing live or miming.

The funny thing is, when Lesley Garrett sings (live, I might add), you can almost see her thinking to herself, "Right, lets show the audience how it SHOULD be done!"

I'm shocked and disappointed to learn that. People should go to the Theatre for live singing - not just to see someone off the telly.

A few years back they had Caprice in Rent. She kept flapping her hair about to hide the miming, but really it was very obvious and the show didn't last much longer.

Ian,

I think without the back-up of the publicity provided by the TV show- if it just relied on normal reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations- I doubt it would last 3 months.

It is by far the poorest West End show I've seen... by a long way!

What's the theatre coming to!! I hope they don't pay people as much to mime to the music as they do a legit talented singer who doesn't mime!! I agree with Ian--reality TV stars should not be the draw to move people to see a show. It should be true musical theatre talent! You would think ALW would agree with that--obviously not. Confused

All ALW is worried about is recouping his up-front expenses for this show, and making a few million over the top... it appears quality of performance was a minor consideration.

Some friends of mine saw it recently, and there was no miming. A good way to check for recorded music is to see if the MD or drummer is wearing cans (headphones). Cans = click track.

It may be they use a mime tape to avoid cancelling appearences due to illness or vocal tiredness?
