Was talking about headstones last night and it got me thinking ,what would I like on my headstone?- would a headstone be something I'd like plonked six foot up there over my head ?- do you get a choice? ....is there any real point in having one- who is it for anyway?
I settled for name, age and " Life was a minor irritation" |

I wonder if it's true that Spike Milligan opted for: "See, I said I wasn't well" |

He wanted it to be "I told you I was ill", but the local church authority wouldn't allow it, I remember that being reported at the time. According to wiki "a compromise was reached with the Irish translation "Duirt me leat go raibh me breoite" and the additional English "Love, Light, Peace".
Some families like to visit and tend graves of their departed loved ones, which is fine for a few years, but there's not much sadder sight than neglected, weathered, overgrown headstones and graves in some of our churches and cemetaries. On balance I think I will prefer to be remembered simply in peoples' minds for as long as they care rather than on a lump of stone. _________________ Ron |

I am reminded of the Charlie Rich tune 'Don't put no headstone on my grave' as sung by Jerry Lee Lewis. All through the song he says he doesn't want a headstone and then with typical Lewis braggadocio at the fadeout he says he wants 'A Monument!' |
