For some reason, probably because I had most of the tracks on the individual artist LPs at the time, I didn't buy the first few Nows - only started with the first CD (Now '86, then Now 10 and onwards).

I did think I might get this reissue, for posterity if you like, but the disappointing thing about it is they've issued it in a digipak, rather than the "traditional" jewel box.

The first CD was a single disc abridged summary version of LPs Now 7 and 8, released in time for Christmas 1986 and called Now '86. It reached No 65 in the album chart.

Now 9 was also released as an abridged single CD, but still called Now 9. The full double CD sets started with Now 10.

None of the LP or tape versions of Now are worth as much as £15 in mint condition (the level where they are included in the Record Collector Guide).

The first Now CD was Now 4, a single disc "pilot" compilation of LPs Now 2, 3 and 4. It is very rare, is listed at £200, but apparently sells for a lot more on the web.

CDs of Now 8 and Now 9 (both abridged single discs of the double LPs) are listed at £35. None issued after that, nor any of the variations like Now Dance or the Millenium series, are rare enough to be worth anything.

Listen again is good ( 2ND Hour ) Wink Just talking about which one sold more out of the 71 so far. How it all started. Also always seem CD1 has the best tracks on than CD2.

Listened to that, but didn't learn anything new - it seemed more of a plug for Now 71 (which was released in November and of which I suspect they have a huge overhang of stock, since it wasn't a very good selection).

Before Now 1, the major labels had dabbled in the chart-compilation market but had largely left it to the American companies K-Tel, Arcade and Ronco who, from 1970, had licensed the tracks, squeezing twenty or more (and sometimes editing them quite crudely) onto some pretty dodgy vinyl product, so that sound quality was, in most cases, dire.

The demand was proven; by taking control themselves the major labels were able to stimulate it still further, without seemingly harming sales of singles, by providing better quality sound on the LPs, subsequently CDs (although I have to say, of the five faulty CDs I have had in 26 years of buying them, four have been Nows).

They tend to program the sides/CDs so that most of the dance/club tracks run together, ditto the pop and rock ones; hence people's preference for one over the other.

In fact it is a true replica in miniature of the original double LP, being a cardboard cover with the two discs in paper inner sleeves inside either side. You need a magnifying glass to read most of the track details.

I don't! I simply read them from the vinyl edition or the cassette (sad to say I have both!)

We were talking about this at work last week. One colleague said he could remember all but one of the tracks on the first album but yet had trouble recognising most of the tracks on Now 71 which was only a couple of months back. As a collector of the series (I have all 71 in some shape or form including EVERY cassette released) I hope they release some more of the originals on CD.

Can I give a plug to the unofficial Now messageboard which is at http://z9.invisionfree.com/Unofficial_Now_Music/index.php?

Judging by the piles of both the last Now, 71, and the replica Now 1 that I see sitting on the shelves of local supermarkets, I suspect they might become bargain basement items very soon.

Meanwhile, you can look forward to the end of Lent and the Easter holiday - Now 72 has been posted up at Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Now-Thats-What-Call-Music/dp/B001T0HH6K/ref=amb_link_83165353_1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=right-1&pf_rd_r=11X3WF31TVHRHEYZ698N&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=466104433&pf_rd_i=229816
