Quote:
Road signs in Birmingham will drop their apostrophes to avoid confusing motorists.

Signage for areas such as "Kings Heath" and "St. Pauls Square" will not be allowed to include possessive punctuation under new rules.

It has been claimed that the move will save Birmingham City Council money and also benefit emergency services who can input addresses into their satellite navigation systems faster.

"I don't see the point of them," councillor Len Gregory told the Birmingham Mail. "If it was to give more clarity to the people of Birmingham it might be something we would look at, but I see no benefits at all."

John Richards, founder of the Apostrophe Protection Society, said that the plans were an example of "absolute defeatism".

"All over Birmingham, and in other cities, teachers are trying to teach children correct grammar and punctuation," said Richards. "Now children will go around Birmingham and see utter chaos. This is setting a terrible example."

Banning it from plurals would have been much the better idea Wink but I think I would rather they didn't use them at all than use them incorrectly.

The chances are they'd put it in the right place for St Paul, but how many Kings were there?
