Carol Thatcher will no longer work on The One Show after being reported for making a racist remark, the BBC has announced.

It's disgraceful. I'm glad the BBC have acted straight away we don't need people like this on our TV screens whether she's the Ex PM's daughter.

Whatever she said was a private remark and it's only because some troublemaker overheard and then blabbed that it was reported. Pathetic. We'll all be clapped in irons soon by the thought police Rolling Eyes

Without being the proverbial 'fly on the wall' whenever, whatever was said about golliwogs was said, I can't comment about it. However, a few years ago I saw the Robertsons golliwog shaped hot air balloon and I photographed it. Does that make me racist?

I actually still have one of those model Robertson's golliwogs made out of clay and painted, I may also have a badge somewhere, I've had them since the 70's when wouldn't you know it they were not racist at all. Rolling Eyes
Anyway I thought she was supposed to have said the player had hair like a golliwog, that is surely hairist rather than racist. Surprised

I don't like the woman and I can't say I'm sorry to see her go but surely a quiet word would have been better. They'll want her head on a stick next.

I feel uneasy that remarks made in a private conversation can lead to someone being banned from the airwaves. Big Brother at work again.

This is beginning to sound like the thin end of McCarthy-ism Rolling Eyes

Yes, I'm a bit uneasy about this too. Seems Chiles and Brand challenged her about the remark (which is fair enough) but I don't see why it's become public knowledge.

I wouldn't normally rush to defend Ms Thatcher, but this is different: nothing less than Freedom of Speech is at stake here.

I could understand if she had made this alleged remark on tv, but it was a private conversation, we all make "non-pc" remarks when we are with our friends, and I just do not see why the BBC have taken this action.
Apart from anything else, all of us of a certain age remember the Robinsons' Golly with nothing but affection, so this bizarre fuss about nothing seems all the more ridiculous Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad

Absolutely ridiculous!

I can't add much more to what has already been said othere than the BBC are running scared. They are petrified that unless they got rid of her, and quickly, it would be another round of the Sachsgate type newspaper publicity against them.

I'm starting to think there are far too many outlets for this kind of 'snitch' and things that are of no consequence to 99% of us should remain private.

I don't enjoy Carol Thatcher's broadcasting style and per se shan't be sorry if she doesn't return to the One Show. And the word golliwog isn't one that I care to use.

But the remarks were made in private, not on air. Wouldn't a quiet word have been sufficient?

Is there an element of vicarious revenge on her mother being served cold?

Granted that Jonathan Ross didn't lose his job for far worse conduct but the sad truth is that, for good or ill, he's a much bigger player than Ms Thatcher.

I like Matthew getting a little heated on Wednesday show telling that female listener off on the Radio. " Well people did lose there jobs, brand also "

I guess this has blown into a big debate. I'm sure some broadcasters are worrying what they say and do now.

Remember in Russia, the authorities used to get children to denounce their parents for speaking ill of the great party leader. Maybe the BBC will start the same process.

Yes, he did get a little touchy when the woman said that the Ross affair was far worse but he was only suspended.. He retorted sharply that several (good?) people at the BBC had lost their jobs over it.

I like him doing this show.

My take on this is that Carol was brought up by parents who may have used such expressions as a matter of course. I don't think she should have been sacked, if she apologised. Jo Brand and Aiden Chiles don't come out of this in a favourable light if the reports of their involvement are true.

When I wake up in the morning after a bad night, the first words my husband speaks to me are " Good Lord, you look like a golliwog". I'll be down the BBC Thought Police first thing tomorrow morning - the guy's gotta go". Laughing

It should also be remembered that both Lesley Douglas & Russell Brand left of their own accord, as opposed to being 'asked to leave'. Was this fact mentioned in the heated debate? If not, I think it should have been.

It's "free" as long as you play by the rules but the rules change daily - you only find out what the new rules are, after you've broken one. In this country , you are free to do anything you like until someone notices you doing it, at which point, a new rule comes into force, and guess what? It's the very one you've just broken.

" But I've been parking here for years - it's my driveway"

" Oh dear, how many other offences would you like us to take into consideration?"
