Listening to The Strangler's "Golden Brown" it strikes me that it is simply a rather banal advert for Heroin. "Never a frown, with golden Brown".
How banal is that?

Sorry cannot agree.

The Stranglers made a number of great songs in the "punk era".

I do agree that the Stranglers were the best of the Punk bands & the quality of their music was quite high.
I loved this song for a long time, the music & feel. But listening to the lyrics it did sound to me simply like a banal advert

I wouldn't have known what it was about in the first place... Razz
I don't usually take note of any lyrics - just the instruments.
I liked the Strangliers too in their time but I wouldn't be able to list many of their songs.
I liked "Peaches" and "Go Buddy Go!"

I always thought that the Stranglers were much better live in smaller venues than they ever were on record. I remember seeing them very early in their career and they were really good (and loud) but their recordings always sounded limp by comparison.

I was in the crowd of the Live at Battersea recording - and very drunk, I recall.

I loved the use of 'Get A Grip On Yourself' on Early Doors during the birthday do!

I couldn't agree more. I used to go and see them when they were still a pub band (in 1976) and there was only a small crowd. They were absolutely amazing then.
