....you never hear them for years, then twice in one day! Smile

Alex played the KLF's "Justified & Ancient" this morning, then Mark played in "Drivetime".... the latter being a request, okay, but twice in the same day? Shocked

(I actually quite liked the KLF, don't get me wrong.... brings back memories of the Annie Nightingale Request Show, when I would eagerly await tracks from them, Flowered Up, 10000 Maniacs and Felt! Not at all keen on the stuff she peddles on R1 nowadays, but hey, she's still employed....)

Agreed. Annie's Sunday request show was legendary. What a shame there's nothing on like it anywhere nowadays. I reckon they could make room for a programme like it on R2 somewhere.

Back when Annie Nightingale's show came to an end, I wondered whether she'd move across to R2 - but that didn't happen because she 're-invented' herself and moved to an overnight slot.

If MG (or anyone else) did do something similar on R2, it wouldn't be the same unless they managed to say "Hi!" before the first words of the first song each week.... Smile

I always remember her saying that.

Ermmm. Hardley in the same league, though I'll admit to enjoying 'Drivetime' these last couple of weeks.

Annie had a unique style that drew you in - she was always slightly scatty, slightly bonkers (in a natural way, not putting it on for effect) and had her own phrases and likes that the public and 'requestees' (hey look, I've just made up a word!) acted upon each week or filed away for future reference.

There were always long-running debates (such as what you called Duran Duran fans - 'Durannies?', or whether 2 Unlimited had ripped part of Visage's "Moon Over Moscow" for one for their hits - back in the days when people cared about such copying!).

It was always a show where you were guaranteed to hear something you'd never heard before and thought "Wow, what's that?" (such as Flowered Up's "Weekender"), or had heard before but never knew what it was (such as Mountain's "Nantucket Sleigh Ride", which I had heard as the signature tune to "Weekend World" for years but didn't know what it was called or who did it, until Annie played it one evening). She even let the dogs bark at the end of The Damned's "Burglary" without cutting them off....! Smile

The closest thing to this on R2 at the moment is the Bob Harris Saturday show - no requests but a good selection although the style of music is different. I think there's room for this format (I would love to see it in place of the frankly awful RB!)....

Because Evans has been away. Mind you, so has Steve Wright and this has made afternoons a lot more bearable for me.
To quote Mike Skinner (aka 'The Streets') 'Dry your eyes mate'. Do I detect you like Evans? Don't worry, it's not illegal & doesn't necessarily make you a bad person. He just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.
