A catchy pop song, but what have Sugarland got to do with Country Music as they are being marketed as? Strange the disparity between the Country charts here and in the US. Here the HMV Sales are all Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton etc and in the US it is Sugarland, and the American Idol type of female singers. |

I've never been to the States, but it strikes me, from viewing the Billboard charts from time to time, that the country/pop artists like Sugarland, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Alan Jackson, fulfil their need for melodic, middle-of-the-road pop, which in this country is more likely to be satisfied by the likes of The Feeling, Take That, Duffy, Lily Allen. They still revere the old warhorses like Cash, Parton and Williams but country and western has evolved to cater for that part of the younger audience that doesn't want wall-to-wall modern r&b.
I'm not an avid fan, but, in the same way that I like nearly all types of music, I like a lot of both the old and the new country music, and a lot of the new stuff is so commercial that there is really no reason why it should not be promoted as pure pop and sell really well in this country. For some reason, radio and the record companies here have decided that country is dead on its feet and have been busy scaling down the time and space on the shelves devoted to it, presumably thinking that if it's labelled Country no-one will want to buy or listen to it.
Sugarland is pop, with a deep South accent, hence they've deemed it Country. The album is pretty good, and there's a cover of Dream Academy's Life In A Northern Town on it. It's pop, I tell you, and if Universal's Lesley Douglas wants it to sell she needs to tell the shops to file it accordingly.
(It will be interesting to see where Taylor Swift's album, out on Monday, gets filed. Same label - Same applies, really) _________________ Ron |

Yes, I thought so.
Taylor Swift is filed under Pop/Rock and given prominence at front of store as a major new release (in HMV).
I think Jenny and Kristian need to have a word in LD's shell-like _________________ Ron |

Seems someone has had a little word.
All I Wanna Do has been promoted to the A list...
(I don't think Terry likes it - he heckled all the way through it the other morning)
Supplies of the album have been imported from the States (they're in a digipak, and the disc includes stuff you can only access on a PC in USA) and given extra display space in HMVs. But they're priced at £11.99 _________________ Ron |

I love both the old & nw country artistes.
My collection goes all the way from the Carter family & Jimmy Rodgers, through Dolly Parton, Cash & Kinky Friedman to Taylor swift, Sugarland & Toby Keith.
All good stuff.
In the USA there are loads of country muic radio stations, it is not something you have to wait for a specific time to hear on the radio like here.
So coutry radio will sound different to a specialist music show over here |

Clive/Moshe, it was on the Radio 2 MB I guess., the Taylor Swift fiasco etc. I was on various Country MBs but most of them have disappeared. WTwith Money was the last one I think. He got upset if you said anything derogatory about Toby Keith or Garth Brooks! |
