In next week's Radio Times, Alison Graham describes messageboards as the playgrounds of the dim, the deranged and the disappointed.

Just thought you might like to know!

I haven't yet decided which category best describes me.

Ian.

I rather think that epithet is more applicable to people who buy the RT (other listings magazines are available, usually free!)

I think it applies to her more than us.

I sometimes wonder why I buy the rag these days, but their programme info suits my needs.

How much does RT cost now Helen? I'm sure it can be QI, but as I get a daily paper can't really justify it!

I think it's recently gone up to £1.10 Shocked

We get the paper as well (handy for last minute changes) but the weekly TV guide is big and I dislike getting the print all over my hands and the armchair.

I don't bother with any printed listeings. What's the point? They're widely available on the web; I can check any programme info on my mobile phone.

The TV isn't where the computer is, and I use a mobile phone to make a call. I prefer it that way.

So do I, H! My mobile may be basic, but it makes calls and sends texts and that is fine by me.

Who is Alison Graham? She seems to be fond of alliteration. Perhaps she prefers to 'Twitter.' No generalisation is ever true, including this one! Rolling Eyes

She is the TV Editor of Radio Times - has been for several years - and writes numerous articles in the mag. She used to write the Soaps page in quite a witty, pithy way.

Yes, but lots of people use things in increasingly different ways. The vast majority of phone users now send & erceive SMS, take pictures & video, and then send them to others. Web browsing is a snip on 3G phones, too. That's why I don't bother with olde fashioned listings magazines - they're a waste of trees and money, imho.

My son-in-law has a plugin for his mobile phone that means that he can programme his SkyHDPlus box recordings even if he's on the other side of the world. Now that's great technology.

I should add that I also use my phone (or should that be "mobile communicator" - beam me up Scotty!) to make phone calls - occasionally! Smile

I'm not disputing that Colby, just making the point that I prefer to read something off a piece of paper than a very small screen of a mobile phone.

It reminds me of a comment made by a listener to JV the other week when the topic was about the age a child should or should not have a mobile phone. One parent who had given in to a 10 year old I think (not 100% sure of age) and given him a mobile phone because, wait for it, the child wanted to take a picture of his mates................

Why on earth didn't they buy him a digital camera? They are pretty cheap these days. You don't need a PHONE to take a picture!

The internet does seem to bring out the worst in people though. People write things they would never say face to face.

But if you have a phone that can (a) take pictures (and some of them can take very good pictures and store them to SD cards just like cameras can) and (b) send them to others or upload them to blogs, Facebook, etc., at the press of a button - why have two devices when one will suffice?

Meanwhile........ will you PLEASE Beam Me Up, Scotty!!!!!!!!! Smile

Then Alison Graham comes across as a narrow-minded, educated, middle-class snob. Yesterday, my son wanted to find out the cause of a problem with the Engine Control Unit on my car. What did he turn to? Specialised web discussion forums. Did he find the answer? Yep.

Obviously, there's messageboads and there's messageboards. That Radio Times woman should get out more.
