Why tea tastes better from your favourite cup

Tea and coffee really do taste better from a favourite cup or mug, research has found.

Dr Tom Stafford, a psychologist at Sheffield University, says a person's brain is trained to believe the daily ritual of making coffee or tea should be done in a certain way in order to derive maximum enjoyment.

He said, "Drinking tea and coffee is very ritualistic. It might be irrational but it's absolutely true. Your daily brew tastes better from your favourite mug."

Rolling Eyes Ye gods! How much are we paying him to serve up old chestnuts like that?

Anyway, boring individual that I am, my favourite mug is just a regency green Denby "craftsman mug" - perm any one of nine in the cupboard (so, strictly speaking I prove the lie to the theory). But my wife must have her coffee in a Winnie the Pooh mug she bought in Sainsbury's for 35p.

What's your favourite vessel for tea or coffee?

Hi Ron,

I only drink coffee and like you my favoured cup/mug is a Denby one! I've two variations to choose from, either a narrow brown Arabesque pattern of a more modern wide brimmed grey/brown one from the Energy range.

Even my Mum says coffee tastes better when it's in a Denby mug.

I've got a BBC Breakfast mug that I got from TV Centre. I really only use it to show off around work (most of my colleagues use mugs I've designed!)

Hello H

That Arabesque is a bit funky! Very Happy

(I notice both ranges are discontinued. Don't you just hate it when they do that?)

That's the design Ron, but I use the cup, same shape but a bit smaller. The one in the picture holds half a pint and a former colleague of mine had one in the office and it had the name of 'Geoff's tower' at the time!

It's infuriating when designs get discontinued but there are a few places you can get replacements. I got some brand new cereal bowls on Ebay last year. Although it's 30+ years old we still love to use it.
