...... I can actually listen. I find Jeremy Vine just a bit too irritating to be honest. Bannister is in the seat for another week until 20th March, I'm glad to say.

The inflexible format of the programme has grown to irritate me to the point of distraction.

Each subject is allowed half an hour and no more, nor less, no matter how interesting, or pedestrian, the discussion gets. The number of times someone is interrupted, either for a record half way through, or when the half hour is up, another track has to be played and the next topic moved on to. It's as bad as the advertising intrusion on programmes and goalscoring on ITV.

I feel axactly the same way. What really annoys me about Vine's style (something not shared by bannister, by the way) is the way he is desperate to shut a caller up quickly even though they haven't made their point, and where they're in the process of wrapping a comment he simply says "Goodbye". Callers, not quite knowing what's going on, are left in limbo and obviously bemused. I'd be really angry in their position. Still, we "must move on" mustn't we. But to what, exactly?

Usually, after such an instance, what is Vine so impatient to do? Play another piece of boring old R2 playlist music that we've heard a million times.

No, Vine irritates me and I tend not to listen when he's in the chair. Bannister at least shows a bit more respect to callers.

Well as it's his show he's in the chair more than he isn't, so why not just admit you don't listen most of the time?

Vine or Bannister, I don't really mind. It's just the rigid production, which they both have to adhere to, that has come to irk me. Perhaps I should lighten up Cool

I don't listen most of the time.

Because of Vine's manner.

Completely agree Very Happy

As to others comments about the format I agree also, we get 20mins per topic, enough time for 2 to argue, and then next.....its so shallow and tabloid Rolling Eyes

Yes, very true. When good old JY had the slot, there was less evidence of there being a format and structure and the show was much more relaxed. JV is like a cat on hot bricks (as if he has to be somewhere else immediately after - which is probably true most days) and the constricting format doesn't help at all.

Time for a change? Yes, in my view. Johnnie Walker weekdays, 12-2 perhaps? Smile (and Pop The Question, why not?).

I couldn't agree more Matthew Bannister is a fresh of breath air. I read somewhere instead of Simon Mayo spinning the discs when he does eventually move over from 5 Live, get him to take over from Jeremy Vine?

I doubt it.!! Radio 2 is committed to so many hours of News and Current Affairs.

Well, it's not just R2. It's a commitment according to the BBC's charter. However, as broadcasters have demonstrated time and again, there are ways of interpreting that requirement - it doesn't have to come in the form of a two-hour phone-in. The JY show managed to cover the ground in a different manner (ie: less frenetic, much like Bannister in fact).

I think Simon Mayo would make an excellent replacement for Vine.

Yes, he is indeed a good 5 Live host and his grasp of current affairs is good. However, I think Bannister does a good job so when we see the back of Vine he'd be a good dep. I, too, would like to see the silly rigid format changed though.

That will never happen as Radio 2 is committed to News & Current Affairs. It's so tight to get everyones opinion to air with 4 topics. I'm guessing they try and build a profile with some listeners, and get the best ones on air, which are sometimes lively.

You're repeating a point to which I've already replied. See my previous comment, above.

Hence previous comments about the format itself being too rigid and constricting. That's the point, Mark.

What on earth prompted that, Mark? That's a bit uncalled for, I do feel. The discussion above is about whether the format is too rigid, and my comments are in that context. So there's no need to be rude.

To change the subject without any great subtlety, that was our Helen whose email was on about 1:45pm yesterday, wasn't it?

Loved the Councillors' catfight which inspired Helen's email.

Ian.

Hi Ian,

I'll have to listen back as I did send in an email after hearing Matthew on Ken Bruce. I didn't hear the second hour of the show as we decided to do some gardening as it was such a lovely day down here.

Aitch always gets her emails read out Wink

I don't listen much to the show with interest these days, regardless of who is on to be honest, Bannister is boring and I agree the format has run it's course. Plus some of the topics they come up with well are just totally uninspiring and hardly earth shattering. The only thing I make a point of listening to is when Terry Walton is on. Sometimes Martin Lewis because although he's manic he does give a lot of useful information on things.

For me it's just become tired and needs a revamp but I think it stems from the editorial side rather than Jeremy as such. It's on in the background and rarely grabs my interest. I think more guests who give information on certain topics and more constructive exchanges would be good rather than trying to drum up controversy on ridiculous topics would be a step forward.

No I don't always get them read out B!

I still listen and yes some topics don't interest me but the majority of things that are in the news don't these days! Life has become so tabloid you sometimes want to run to the other end of the earth to escaoe it!

Anyway as I've said before I often find topics I thought not at all interesting to be just the opposite and you can always turn it down a bit. if that happens.

Aitch you are being modest I've heard your name on R2 more than anyone else's Laughing across the board that is Very Happy

The team have only ever read out one of mine ! Not that I email that often, so that is probably a factor.

Yes it's a fair point about tabloid life although that doesn't mean R2 have to pander to it or the BBC in general as they don't need to rely on advertising revenue to be a bit different do they? Isn't that the point of a public broadcaster that they should rise above that kind of thing? Rather than get drawn into it?

Yes sometimes subjects that you didn't think would be interesting are I agree and there is always the option of turning the radio down. Still think the format is outdated and needs revamping though. XX

Jimmy Young used to read out my emails back in the late 90s (probably because the show only got a handful!) and Matthew Bannister has read out several. But Jeremy Vine has never read one - ever*.

Maybe he is aware of my ambivalence towards him and his presentation style! Smile

* Correction: I've just remembered that's not true. The day George Harrison died I emailed to say that I thought George's lead guitar on "She Said, She Said" (Revolver) perfectly exemplified Harrison's under-rated skill as a guitarist. Vine read it out and played out the show with that very song.

Sorry JV. I take it all back.

Was JV sitting in for Jimmy that day Colby as George died long before he took over the show?
