|
|
Hi all,
Currently on my mp3 player I have 87 musicals. I can think of a few to add, but can anyone think of any "essential" musicals I might want to include?
I'm a bit light on the Rodgers and Hammerstein, and I can think of a few Jerry Herman to add. So Carousel, Showboat, South Pacific, Barnum, City of Angels. I also need to get CD recordings of Grand Hotel, The Life, Titanic and Copacabana.
Anyway, the list at present:-
Aladdin
Annie
Annie get your gun
Anyone can Whistle
Avenue Q
Baby
Billy Elliot
Bye Bye Birdie
Cabaret
Camelot
Candide
Carrie
Chess
Chicago
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Company
Countess Maritza
Dames at Sea
Destry rides again
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Evening Primrose
Forever Plaid
Full Monty
Godspell
Good News
Goodbye Mr Chips
Grind
Guys and Dolls
Hairspray
Hunchback of Notre Dame
I love you, you’re perfect, now change
I’m Getting My Act Together
Jekyll and Hyde
Jerry Springer – The Opera
Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat
Kismet
Kiss me Kate
Les Miserables
Lion King
Little Shop of Horrors
Mamma Mia
Merry Widow
Metropolis
Miss Saigon
Monty Python’s Spamalot
Moulin Rouge
Mr Cinders
My Fair Lady
Napolen (sampler)
Nine
Oklahoma
On your Toes
Orpheus in the underworld
Pickwick
Pippin

Aspects of Love and Passion both OLC recording.
ALW not everyones cup of tea and niether is Sondheim but I see you already have both composers on your list so I thought I'd mention these to as they are my personal favourites from both men. _________________ Put some records on while I pour |

Passion is a good one. Forgot about that.
Aspects of Love however shall not darken the doors of my player. I listened to it once and never made it past act 1. FOund it terribly repetitive and musically dreary. For the same reason, The Woman in White is also consigned to oblivion! |

Lets see---
The King and I--my personal fave!(any recording I love them all)
Mame--if only for the title song and the overture
South Pacific--film soundtrack is my choice on that one
Hello Dolly--again film soundtrack--love Babs!
Anything Goes--1989 London Cast--(ok this one I had to include-- )
I'm sure I'll think of more--maybe you've excluded these on purpose. I was going to suggest Chess--but I see you already have it! That is definitely a must have!

I can see if you don't like one how you may not like the other one either as they are similar in construction. Aspects is my fav ALW by along way I suppose I've just listened to it so often now it's become second nature _________________ Put some records on while I pour |

How about a couple of Lionel Bart's musicals?
Oliver and Blitz! are my favourites; the latter was reissued on CD 18 months ago and it's packed with good songs and music. _________________ Ron |

Wot - no Jesus Christ Superstar?!
I'd certainly recommend Mack & Mabel, Martin Guerre (either version) The Wild Party (Andrew Lippa version is the one I have) and of course - The Fix!!
If you like Les Mis, try Le Revolution Francais and another great Sondheim is Sunday in the Park with George, especially the recent Menier Chocolate Factory revival cast cd _________________ "I'm a firm believer in not having to play the hand you're dealt." |

Excellent suggestions from all contributors so far. No Gilbert and Sullivan, I see--not everyone's cup of tea (is mine but Mrs W is less keen) but Alan Titchmarsh's current Sunday evening series may help you to decide whether this is for you.
Still on older works, how about Edward German's Merrie England--patchy but the many good patches really are good. Other older pieces worth a try include the Arcadians and the Maid of the Mountains.
And at the risk of destroying my streetcred (if it ever existed), I like many of the tunes from Mary Poppins, notwithstanding so often hearing them through a post-lunch stupor on Christmas afternoon!

I agree about Mary Poppins!! It's always been a favorite of mine. I was also thinking about Roar of the Greasepaint Smell of the Crowd---there are some classic songs in that one. |

Hey Howard, is 'Steel Pier' anything to do with Atlantic City?
I have some interest in the Steel Pier there.

Howard,
Some good suggestions there. Company and She Loves Me are already there. Some of those I've not heard of, and I'm not sure whether CD recordings exist or are in print of some of the others. Thanks for those though!
John - Steel Pier is the last Kander and Ebb musical and is about the dance marathons of the depression in Atlantic City. It got 11 tony nominations but only lasted 78 days on broadway.
