I know that F1 supporters on this forum are as rare as rocking horse **** but I still can't help recording my joy at the start of the new season. (Up at 5.am this morning. )
Great that Brawn GP are reaping the rewards of the development work done at the cost of last season, and that Button and Barrichello are around to exploit it. Well deserved.
Thought that the new BBC F1 anchorman, Jake Humphreys, was very professional, Coulthard as pragmatic and knowledgeable as usual and good to see Martin Brundle transferred across. I can do without Eddie Jordan though, and not to keen on Jonathon Ledgard who seems more suited to a radio commentator role judging by his rapid fire statement of the blooming obvious during the race.
This could be a great season with a lot of variety and not the same old same old Ferrari/McLaren battle. Joy unconfined!

I always watch F1 GPs as well - though I'm not mad enough to get up at 5.00am for the qualifiers!

I think Ross Brawn has done really well to hit the ground running (or should that be "wheel spinning"?) and it's great that his team has already stolen pole from the usual gang. Button deserves a decent break now after being let down in the past few years by tech problems. I'd love to see more Button v. Hamilton head-to-heads!

I'm with you all the way. With Virgin now behind Brawn it could just inject a much-needed bit of energy into the sport - and wouldn't it be great to have some real competition.
I'm a fan of F1 largely because it's a sport that benefits from mostly British R&D and engineering - hence the reason why virtually all the racing teams have their bases here in the UK.
I won't be getting up early for the Melbourne race in the morning - but I'm going to try desperately to avoid any knowledge of the outcome prior to viewing it later. It's usually impossible but here's hoping......

Well, as I will, (be getting up early) I'll try not to post about the outcome until after the repeat is televised.
I'm just hoping that the appeal about the diffuser being used by Toyota, Williams and Brawn doesn't rob anyone of victory later next week. It's surely not beyond the wit of man, (nor the FIA even) to try to start the season free of controversy and with any controversial issues sorted. However that seems to be beyond the FIA again this season, just as it was last. _________________ Minx

Excellent finish, eh Minx? Ross Brawn's team really has hit the ground running as I had hoped - a 1,2 finish for Button and Barrichello. Wow!
Let's hope they can hold on to the points. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

A fantastic race - enjoyed every minute. I see that Trulli has now been penalised, making Hamilton 3rd. And if the appeal on the diffusers is successful he'll pick up max points! Good enough reason for the appeal to fail as far as the FIA are concerned
I was so pleased for Button and Barrichello - a incredible stroke of luck for Reubens that Kubica and Vettel took each other out. Now I've just read Vettel has been fined and penalised ten places on the grid for not pulling over after the impact.
Looking forward to next weekend already! _________________ Minx

Two great things about the start of the new F1 season: (1) it's looking like being much more competitive than it's been for years and (2) it's back in its rightful place on the BBC! No annoying ad breaks when the action hots up.
Oh...... and (3) they're using the "proper" Fleetwood Mac sig tune again! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Well, I now hear that after being unexpectedly awarded 3rd place Hamilton has been disqualified!
Stewards' verdict was that "Hamilton and... McLaren Mercedes acted in a manner prejudicial to the conduct of the event by providing evidence deliberately misleading to the stewards at the hearing on Sunday."
It's all to do with Trulli and the safety car, I think...... I just hope this season is not going to be dogged with rules, rules, rules about infringements and stewards |

F1 is just a joke - why does anyone bother with it? There are so many incidents like this throughout the season, it all looks a farce. _________________ MiS |

I don't think it will stop at Hamilton being disqualified from the Melbourne Grand Prix. From what I've read, Hamilton told one story to the FIA and another to the cameras. Bit basic that, Lewis! There could be a lot more at stake for him/McLaren than just this particular penalty.
There was a lot of support for McLaren over last season's disputes, but this is beginning to look like maybe it was ill-founded. All in all, yet another furore marring the start of a potentially great season.
Malaysia looks like it might be a rainy and murky race. Button is about as good as it gets in the wet, (and Barrichello no slouch either) but the car has not been tested in those circumstances. Lewis is not bad in the wet either, but will he be there???? _________________ Minx

People get shown the yellow card or subbed in football and that doesn't seem to bother anyone - so what's the difference? I find F1 much more exciting than boring football (especially Premier League with its primadonna spoilt-brat players) any day. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Well at least in football the score doesn't get changed after the match, and the players don't get told to start the game from behind the goal! I think you'll find F1 is the sport full of primadonnas. Laughable. _________________ MiS |

I don't agree at all. In fact I would say that football is the sport with a higher proportion of primadonnas, to be honest.
At least the Hamilton/Trulli episode proves that there are adequate checks in the system, and if that means that drivers/teams have to be stripped of their points when found to have done wrong (as did Hamilton) then that - to me at least - has to be a good thing. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

The problem is, though , that football scores do remain after video evidence clearly shows
a) off-side
b) not of-side
c) ball did not cross line
d) goalkeeper was fouled in the box
e) should have been a penalty
f) should not have been a penalty
g) he dived
h) he should have been sent off
i) he should not have been sent off
etc etc
Such errors and events not spotted lead to teams getting relegated, cups won or lost, players suspended, and just this week England's victory over Ukraine in the World Cup qualifier might have been down to an off-side goal??
All is not right in football - right now results depend on a referee's decision - whether the decision is right or wrong - no going back (except for unjustified red cards - so if THAT is allowed why are goals allowed that shouldn't be goals??
another thread needed methinks

Did Hamilton lie or didn't he? Hmmm. It gets more intriguing. Malaysia is going to be a good contest this weekend I feel. It sure beats seeing 22 blokes kicking a ball around a bit of grass without it going into the net at any time in 90 minutes! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I've seen some excellent 0-0 draws, with displays of superb defensive tackles and ball-stopping abilities!

Indeed, but have to say I do prefer goals in a game, hopfully a couple this afternoon at Coventry vs. Reading
We're on 50 points so pretty well safe from relegation with quite a few games to go.
Anyway, I see the Malaysian qualifyings are on now. Would love to see Button doing well again, getting a couple of early wins under his belt will see all the others trying too hard to catch him and making mistakes

Well the way I see it, yes. The radio recording said exactly what happened, he was advised to let Trulli pass, he did so, but then he allowed Dave Ryan to say that Trulli overtook him, when in fact Trulli had no other alternative but to do so, since Hamilton was doing about 15 mph in order to make sure he was passed. I don't think for one moment that Hamilton tried to manouevre Trulli into being disqualified, I think he was just playing safe.
The chicanery (get it?? ) came later when Ryan tried to re-write the facts and Hamilton failed to put the record straight. I feel very sorry for them both, Ryan because he appears to have thrown his career and his reputation away for nothing, and Hamilton because he has shown himself as less than honourable and a bit of a wimp.
And McLaren come out of it worst of all. Looks like the FIA have been right to be on their backs all this time. _________________ Minx
