Excellent track to end the show.. Stone Free by Jimi.. I just love Hendrix.
He totally amazed me when he first appeared on the scene!

Disaster has struck tonight! I was recording the show from my set top box onto a DVD and it stopped working after 39 minutes sob! sob!
I have downloaded Audacity but can anyone tell me (in simple terms - I'm a dingbat!) how to use this and record off Listen Again please? I have re-read the posting on the What's happening forum, but I'm none the wiser.
Sorry to be so dim.

Oh Angela what a disaster. I'm sorry but I've never used Audacity so can't help.

Why don't you you post a separate thread for help? Someone else may know how to go about it.

The key to Audacity is to check how the audio from the soundcard is routed into the program, and from then it's quite easy. But check that the levels are good and (on Windows PCs anyhow) make your recording in .WAV faudio file format.

The help files associated with Audacity are comprehensive enough, so there's no point in a user like me going through the process.

At its very simplest, once you get a level indication in the interface you just hit "Record" and tell it where to store the file. When it comes to editing the files and saving them in your preferred format, you're into another level. You'll need a "LAME" plugin to convert to MP3 due to licensing limitations, but the app tells where to get it and what to do with it.

Using Audacity to record internet sound you have to make sure you have Windows Recorder set up.

Find Windows Recorder in (probably),

All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment

Open Recorder

Do Edit > Audio Properties > Sound Recording > Volume

and select the Line box. Leave the Windows Recorder bits open as you might need them again

Open Audacity (double click the icon on desktop) and you are ready

Click the record button.

Then start the iplayer.

Should record the sound, scroll along the Audacity screen to catch up with what's recording to see if the volume is ok. If the volume is too loud (wave is solid blue) then adjust the Line Volume on that window you left open.

At end of your show Click the stop button (yellow square)

File > export as wav

If you want to save as mp3 you need another free file called lame but try the wav first (note: 1 hour wav will be 600Mb)

Hope that helps.

John

There's good news and bad news. The good news is I managed to record it using Audacity, the bad news is the laptop mike was on so it has recorded people in the room talking over it! I didn't realise this could happen and I didn't know it had a microphone. The even worse news is I have hardly got time to have another go tonight!

Oh Angela, hope you manage to get it before time runs out. As long as you start recording before tonights show finishes you should be okay. I once just got a show recorded by the skin of my teeth!

It's a good one tonight mind, with songs from 1963. Have just got in from a couple of days away so great listening to JW (and also Suzi Quatro!) in the car. Am a but hoarse from singing Sad

Do it from iPlayer then - the quality in Flash Player won't be any different.

Great to hear what was the B side of Martha and the Vandellas Jimmy Mack (I was writing that just as JW said it, honest!). Still got the 45 as it's a fave of mine.

PS Should have said it was Third Finger Left Hand........

Yes I was listening in. Another great show bringing back plenty of memories.

I have given up trying to record onto DVD via my set top box, hubby is recording on cassettes instead. Less chance of my blood pressure getting raised this way! I will have another go at recording from Listen Again using Audacity, I am still struggling, obviously I'm not as bright as some on here but I am a trier and will not give up! I hope to have mastered the art before Easter with the other goodies coming up on BBC Essex.

Looking forward to Emperor Rosko next week, so far we think Roger 'Twiggy' Day has been the best guest.

What's going wrong? It's the same as recording any Tv channel off Sky or Freeview.

Hi Angela,

I've just read about another free program called Freecorder from an article in Computer Active magazine. It's in edition no 287, 19Feb-4 Mar if you can get a hold of it, there is a 3 page workshop.

Anyway this is the link you need www.snipurl.com/8tvpr and it takes you to the site Applian Technologies. From reading the article it looks as if it works in a similar way to Total Recorder which I use, I can't get to grips with Audacity either.

I'm going to install it on a laptop we have hopefully this week so I'll see how it goes and I'll try to help if you need it.

Interestingly, I'm a freelance technology journalist and I'm about to start writing a piece on how to convert audio to formats for use on mobile players like iPod, iPhones etc., for another popular PC magazine in the next week, so I'll paraphrase it and post it somewhere accessible! I have a direct line of contact with Applian Technologies as it happens!

A couple of years ago I did a short feature on how to use Audacity for an Ozzie magazine. I'll pull that out of the archive too.

PS: I have written for Computer Active, Computer Shopper and the late lamented Computer Buyer, among many others.

The first problem was two weeks ago, I used a new DVD which recorded for two hours but would only let me listen to 39 minutes when playing back.
Last week I recorded the whole show on a DVD that had been used before but deleted and it wouldn't play back at all.

Then I tried recording that one from Listen Again using Audacity, the description of my disaster is posted on here already. Unfortunately I didn't realise that I could have got it again before that weeks show ended. I only saw Helen's post the next morning!

I get ComputerActive on subscription so will look again for this article. I vaguely remember it, but thought I was sorted with Audacity so didn't take a lot of notice at the time!

Hi Angela,

I've had massive PC problems this week, may have lost a lot of things, but have installed this program on our laptop today and I'm recording last week's show.

It was very easy to set up and hopefully will work okay.
