I've got a pristine copy of "SAHB Without Alex" (the one the band made after he died) which is signed by all of them. I got them to sign it after an interview I did with them for a local radio station back in the 70s. We went to the local pub and they were really nice guys who spoke fondly about being on the road with Alex. Apparently he was something else when touring! (And a good mate of Lulu from his early Glasgow days).

I got Pete Atkin's remastered A King At Nightfall/The Road Of Silk, and Secret Drinker/Live Libel. I've since had 'Wristwatch For A Drummer' in my head a lot!

Live Libel parodies acts of the time - Clive James wasn't a big fan of T. Rex, Black Sabbath or Grand Funk Railroad as can be gathered by 'Black Funk Rex'!

The trouble with me is I am always buying CDs! It's almost too easy to do it on Amazon these days, and listening to Sounds of the 60s nearly always costs me a fortune, but I am forever on the lookout for music which will add to my knowledge and appreciation of pop music and widen the scope of what I can play on my hospital radio show.

I am currently "in love" with Shelley Fabares. This means that a CD of hers which I have had for quite sometime ,which combines two original albums of hers from the early sixties, Shelley! and The Things We Did Last Summer has now found its way on to my mp3 player and into the studio CD players.Highlight tracks for me include her classic hit "Johnny Angel" and a gorgeous version of "I'll See You In September".

Paul Peterson, who played Shelley's TV brother (Jeff to her Mary Stone) in the Donna Reed Show, duets with Sheeley most effectively on the novelty song "Very Unlikely", and this also led to me ordering a similar CD of Paul's this week which will be on its way to me shortly.

Other recent acquisitions include the original soundtrack to The Boat That Rocked, 101 Pirate Radio Hits(both of which contain a lot of the usual favourites but a few surprises as well),and then there is "Wild Cool and Swingin' Mrs. Miller".That purchase was prompted by last weeks playing of her version of "A Hard Days Night" on SOTS and some comments friends had made on Facebook.I am not sure what to make of Mrs Miller, and I think she probably traded on that for a lot of people! She seems to have little control over her vocal range and her sense of timing on some tracks is all her own for sure, not even shared by anyone else in the studio as far as I can make out! But the lady did try, and as they say God loves a trier, even if in some cases, the result is so bad that it turns out perversely good on the other side.

And some of the discs I picked up today but have not had time to listen to as yet include.

Bob James The Essential Collection 24 smooth Jazz Classics.2 CD set which features Angela which was of course the theme tune to Taxi!.

Sid Phillips and His Band The Centenary Collection a double CD released in June 2007 to celebrate what would have been Sid's centenary, a great collection of 50s and 60s recordings from a band I have vivid memories of on the radio growing up.

Hank Williams The Essential Collection, a 3CD set which is pretty much what it says on the cover as far as I can ascertain

Workin, Relaxin, Steamin, another 3 CD set featuring the Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers

Nat king Cole the Absolutely Essential Collection, 3 more CDs which again seem to cover every significant recording I know of by Nat

and finally Billie Holliday her Finest Studio Recordings which looks a good set to start the Billie Holliday section of my collection off.Again a 3 CD set.

All the 3 CDsets were bought from Borders for the princely sum of £4.99 each, the Bob James set was £8from HMV, the Sid Phillips set £9 from HMV.

Others I have on order include the Paul Peterson album I mentioned above, Jesse McCartney's retooled version of Departure, (4 extra tracks and some remixes which as I am a huge fan of Jesse's I would like to have for the sake of completeness even though I bought the original in the week of release last year), and Rockin' With The Pirates, another box set this time with some less than familiar, but all the same very welcome names in it.

I will report back on these as and when they arrive and when I have had chance to listen to them!

An impressive acquisitions list indeed! I particularly like the Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday sets.

During the week, the CD Departure Recharged by Jesse McCartney arrived.Basically, this is a reissue of last year's successful Departure CD with some remixes, and four extra tracks. The packaging is different-better in my opinion-and the four extra tracks are,for me, Jesse at his very best, especially Crash and Burn and In My Veins.

Today, after watching an excellent Jazz 625 presentation last night, I bought a five CD collection of Theolonius Monk ,a compilation of the Four Freshmen and a CD of music from Ivor the Engine,The Pogles and Pogles Wood by The Vernon Elliot Music Ensemble. All from HMV and all for £30 total.

This week, I bought 'Bob Rocks' by Bob Luman. Thirty six tracks dating from the late fifties to the late seventies. James Burton is featured on lead guitar on the early tracks and that was one of the reasons I bought it. Most people know Bob for his pop hit 'Let's think about livin', but he also had a rockabilly career and later became a Country Music singer. Sadly, Bob died in 1978.

I also bought 'Nuggets' with lots of psychedelic tracks on including the best take off of Bob Dylan that I've heard, by 'Mouse and the Traps' singing 'A public execution.' Done in the style of 'Positively Fourth Street.'

Lacy J Dalton's hits album I bought mainly for '16th Avenue' the song about aspiring Nashvile songwriters, though the rest of the album is good too.

Blimey, I remember Peely extolling the virtues of JR on his 10.00pm weekdays R1 show back in the mid-70s! Around the same time as he used to play that home-made radio commercial for Rhino Records in New York, I recall.

The Paul Petersen CD referred to in my previous messages arrived last week, and very pleased I am to have it too! I had been expecting it in September, and was puzzled to see it advertised as immediately available on the British amazon site. However, further investigation revealed that I had been given the September supply date by American Amazon bevause I had tied it into a purchase of the second season DVDs of the Donna Reed Show,a set which is due in September.

So, a little amendment here, a new order there and the CD is now here1

It's actually an exact copy of the set up for the Shelley Fabares CD, in that it is 2 original Colpix albums by Paul from 1962 and 1963 combined on to the one CD by Rhino in 1999.24 tracks in all and for me some great pop memories brought back to life again in the form of songs like My Dad (sung about Paul as Jeff Stone about his TV Dad Dr Alex Stone played by Carl Betz on the Donna Reed Show) and the amusing She Can't Find Her Keys.

There are a number of standards on here and back in the day it must have taken a very brave young man to try and cover Love Me Tender on an album but it is here and Paul does it with considerable success.

Overall, I think Paul is shown as a good singer, and I have to say that I prefer him on the ballads to the uptempo songs, but this as I said is a CD which I am delighted to have.

I think what is happening to me now in terms of my musical collection is that,in tandem with my burgeoning collection of DVDs,and my love of many things sixties, I am beginning to range far and wide in my search for music to add to my collection.SOTS is an invaluable aid to this and long may it continue as long as my bank balance will stand the strain.

I homed in on the Donna Reed show when it came to DVD and have since become hooked on it, and from that I have homed in also on Shelley and Paul and become similarly hooked.

Sadly of course both the adult leads of the Donna Reed Show are no longer with us but Shelley and Paul very much are and I am glad that they are now able to enjoy this new wave of success and popularity.

Now, where's that 3 in a row I requested Sir Brian........? Very Happy

Bob Dylan-'Together through life' I saw His Bobness in Concert in Liverpool on May 1st. Earlier that day Bob went to Mendips, John Lennon's former home. I wish I'd been there too! Bob performed 'Something' the George Harrison song that night, along with some recognisable songs and some 'what the heck is this tune' numbers! Laughing

Abnormally Attracted To Sin (Tori Amos). Uncut and Mojo have both labelled it as 'Kate Bush lite', but I haven't yet made up my mind.

'Give' on the Tori Amos CD had been likened to Portishead by some other fans, but now I can't stop thinking of Bill Bailey doing 'Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah' in the style of Portishead (on the 'Part Troll' DVD)!

Uncut didn't like 'Mary Jane'. When she sings 'Mary Jane who?' I'm thinking about Kirsten Dunst, who was Mary Jane in the Spiderman movies, and who was also one of the schoolgirls in 'Mona Lisa Smile'.

I don't think I have ever been so disappointed with something I've looked forward so long for.

At least with Ringo Starr's Best of... last year they included all the hits and best-known songs. Where's...

BanglaDesh
Crackerbox Palace
This Song
Ding Dong

(OK, I'm not missing that last one much, and thank goodness they left off True Love)

I have been catching up on some back catalogue

Julie Felix - Clotho's Web (her Rak label days with Mickie Most)
Madeline Bell - Doin' Things
Steeleye Span - Winter (a cheesy romp through the Christmas catalogue)
Madelaine Peyroux - Half The Perfect World

and more up to date

British Blues Quintet - Live At Glasgow
Cara Dillon - Hill Of Thieves and After The Morning
Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain - The Secret Of Life
Chris Rea - Still So Far To Go
Rhythms del Mundo - Classics (Charity record. Kenny Young produced it. Latin arrangements of famous songs, eg Hotel California, featuring The Killers, Walk On The Wild Side, featuring The Editors, and Under Pressure, featuring Keane. It's dreadful)

Lest anyone think I'm made of money, that, plus some of the Beatles remasters, is six months' worth.

They seem to be played a lot on 6 music at present. By all accounts they're a 'supergroup' in a 'Travelling Wilburys' style. One of the names I've heard mentioned for them is Dave Grohl.

At a gig last night, I bought two Aynsley Lister CDs; Equilibrium which I understand is the latest, and Upside Down, an older one. If you like blues-rock, then I'd recommend seeing Aynsley Lister.

Haven't bought much stuff recently, Johnnie Walker used to encourage me to spend before 'Sounds of the Seventies' but then on breakfast (I think) I heard him play a Richard Hawley track off Truelove's Gutter, so have just bought that. Am listening to it now for the second time today.

Claire Hamill - One House Left Standing remaster (Stuart Maconie played River Song on 'Freak Zone', and Where Are Your Smiles At was on Mojo's 'Island Folk' sampler)
Camel - Stationary Traveller- memories of an ex-boyfriend
Pink Floyd - Ummagumma - that man Maconie again! He featured it on 'Freak Zone', and played 'Several Species...' and 'The Narrow Way pts 1-3'.

On order:
Camel - I Can See Your House From Here (I will dedicate 'Ice' to Wakefield City Council for their failure to grit areas outside town)
Judy Dyble - Talking With Strangers (another Stuart Maconie heroine; she was interviewed by him the week this came out)
