Started it yesterday and finished it this afternoon. Can't really see what all the fuss was about - a straight-forward detective/crime novel (albeit with religious undertones) together with an ambigious ending. Reading the pre-release hype, it sounded as though it would be some amazing mystery ride, full of plot and counter-plot, all dressed up in code and disguises. Rubbish - I saw through one major 'code' straight away and felt rather cheated after finishing the book.

I don't rush out to buy the 'blockbusters' (I picked it up for a quid in a local 2nd book store on Friday) but prefer to let the dust settle a little before finally deciding to pick a copy up.

Anyone else read it and care to comment?

Yes, I thought it was rubbish too. But my supervisor has read all of his books and enjoyed them. Give me a Graham Hurley, Jeffrey Deaver or Lee Child any day.

I too was disappointed with the book, but all the hype beforehand spoiled it for me as it meant none of the speculations about Jesus were surprises.

I did enjoy Angels & Demons a bit more though I thought there was a plot flaw which I'll ask folks about if anyone asks.

I read Digital Fortress, was a good book. (But there were lots of factual mistakes). But didn't like Angels and Demons and gave up on the Davinci Code when I tried to read it.

I read the Da Vinci Code and it was a load of garbage. As for the "hero" - for crying out loud how many times do you have to get attacked before you realise "oops, there's something not right here!" What a disappointing book after all the hype.

Child is okay (Jack Reacher started out an interesting character but after eight or nine novels now I think he's getting a little predictable), but I don't like the ones written 'in the first person' as I think it's a huge 'Mary Sue' type thing for any author to do, unless of course it's an autobiography.... YMMV. When I read a novel, I want to see the story from the characters' viewpoints, not pretend it's my own.

Speaking of getting predictable, Colin Forbes must be onto his 20th or so novel featuring Tweed and the rest of his little gang - although the first one or two were mildly entertaining, it got to the point where you could predict what his core characters were going to wear, eat, drink and say during the course of the next novel. Talk about flogging something to death! Rolling Eyes The latest tomes are probably fit only to balance a lop-sided table....

Out of the four of his books I've read, I liked Deception Point the most, Angels and Demons was quite scary and a good read until the Helicopter scene near the end... that really spoiled it........ Digital Fortress was quite different... the eye thing was a bit eeeeewwww.... .... The Da Vinci Code was ok a little too fast and a really poor ending.....

Well, I've somehow acquired "Digital Fortress" and started it yesterday as a change of pace from my usual hard sf. So far, it's pretty ordinary. Actually, no, that's being charitable to the author. "Poor" would be a better choice of expression. Dan Brown must have some pretty good hype merchants working on his behalf.

Digital Fortress - well, that was about seven hours of my life I wish I had back. Note to self - never buy another Dan Brown novel again.... Rolling Eyes

They can go in the charity sack the next time one comes through the letterbox - although maybe that could be construed as cruelty to disadvantaged people.
