Did anyone watch " Britain's Got Talent ' on Saturday night. I was surprised when Susan Boyle came on and sang - I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables.

I wonder how far she will go? I'm sure if Simon Cowell didn't help her then maybe Andrew Lloyd Webber could get involved? Maybe a potential winner, or in the live show?

I thought the Show overall was very poor-as for Fabia Cerra-not a very clever act imho.

To me, these sort of shows epitomise whats gone wrong with the music / radio industry (+ the fact that I feel the need to call it an 'industry') This seems to be borne out in the track 'Rex Bob Lowenstein' by Mark Germino & the album 'The Last DJ' by Tom Petty. Also seems to be hinted at in Sandi Thom's 'Punk Rocker With Flowers In My Hair'.

I don't really see how much different "Britain's Got Talent" is from, say, "Opportunity Knocks" or "Search for a Star". It's billed at being a talent show open to all. What's wrong with that?

I thought the first of the new series was actually quite amusing - I just wish we could have seen more of the bad acts as well as the good.

Hi colby

To me, the difference between Britains Got Talent and the shows which went before it-may I just cite Opportunity Knocks and New Faces here because unfortunately I have no memory of Search For A Star-is that we only got to see the people who made it through to the final stages.

We didn't see people getting rejected. We didn't see people suffering humiliation either by their own hand or anyone elses. And most of all, we didn't see them doing it infront of an audience apparently packed with bloodthirsty hyenas.

I think it's great that we have talent shows on TV and we do need more variety shows on TV.But, to me, despite what some people have said-not necessarily on here but I have certainly read it on other forums-this is NOT a variety show, it's yet another reality show, until it comes time for the final stages in which the viewers can have a say, then it turns into a talent show.

I know that some good comes of shows like this but I really wish we could do without the early rounds and go straight to the final stages.

I don't agree. I don't think it's a "reality show" in the least. In fact, I'm not exactly sure what a so-called reality show actually is (and I think most of the media don't either); to me, a "reality" show is one where we see people sat around doing not very much on live TV. Moreover, "reality" TV is all too often comprised of people who once were in the public profile (I hesitate to call them celebrities) who are now on their uppers and therefore desperate for money and attention. This is different in that we do see some process of elimination which is, to some degree, based upon "talent".

I'm of a different view. I actually prefer the early stages. They're much more fun!

I don't really care, to be honest. That's business - and that's life. He's no different to the Grades and Delfonts of earlier times. They did the same.

The problem I have with these shows (apart from loathsome Cowell and Moron childishly ripping some poor sod to shreds) is that once someone's won... where do they go? Years ago these acts would be paid to do their best 10 minutes on Saturday night telly, but now they do it for free and it's the viewers that pays. How is that good?

Amusingly, he's made sod all from last year's winner - the singles and DVDs have tanked.

I can't help but think of the contract X Factor finalists apparently have to sign (according to the Daily Mirror) http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv-entertainment/x-factor/2008/12/10/x-factor-exclusive-secrets-of-the-winner-s-1million-contract-115875-20959077/ Shocked Shocked

Dunno 'bout that. "BGT" winner Paul Potts is selling albums and concert appearances the world over. And you only need one Leona Lewis ("X Factor") to put pennies in the electric meter for a year or two. For Cowell, the gains far outweigh the losses - and he's shrewd enough to know it.

Fair enough, he's not into making long-lasting careers. He couldn't care less. It's all about the instant reward, and while he has made loads off Potts and Lewis he didn't make anything off George Sampson at all.

But he more than made up for these losses with the two mentioned above, and his method of operation is no different to the way any business has to take a risk on investments. Some products pay back handsomely whilst others don't. That's a risk any businessperson takes.

Let's face it - Leona Lewis is worth many, many millions to Cowell. After all, she's not just just a huge bankable asset here in the UK but even more so in the most important market of all - the USA. That's what counts. The old expression "You win some, you lose some" is certainly true in showbiz. With Lewis - and, to a lesser degree, with Potts - he's certainly winning.

He has an option on all those who make it to the TV studio on all his competitions. Don't forget, also, that it's his own TV production company (Syco) that owns the format rights on these shows, too.

It shows good business sense to me. I wish I had his nouse!

She's becoming a big hit with You Tube viewers. I eat my hat if she's not in the final live shows, but I won't put money on whether she will win.

I look at it the opposite way. The music industry (including Cowell) think they know what people want - and then along comes this woman who proves them wrong.

The great unwashed love the underdog - especially one with such a fabulous voice.

I like that. I predict that she'll do well. I hope she does. "Talent", as they say, "will out".

I predict that Susan Boyle could be the next Marni Nixon. Anyone know who she is? Rolling Eyes

She walked on looking like Billy Connolly in drag!

Then she sang better than Elaine Paige !!

All this publicity is a bit unfair on the other BGT contestants Confused

Its all PR hype and marketing to co-incide with the start of the series. gets them on the news.

She might be able to sing we've only heard 1 song, and all the best to her, but its just publicity.

Of course it's publicity. It's called "PR" - and every business needs PR to enable it to thrive. God knows, ITV Plc is having a hard enough time selling spots and sponsorship packages at the moment and desperately needs all the positive promotion it can get. Why? Because PR attracts audiences which attracts advertising agency bookings which leads to higher revenues which leads to.......... re-investment.

And, another thing, it might well be a publicity stunt to get the media on-side in the usual feeding frenzy that goes hand-in-hand with programming like this but I get the distinct impression that there's one inalienable fact here:

That woman can sing.

Good for her.

I think she is supposed to sing a duet with Elaine? That will be interesting!! Anyway the press have got a good story to carry on with. It takes away the doom and gloom. I guess if she doesn't win then she will have a lot of job offers. Hopefully she has stopped her dole money Laughing

Interesting that EP avoided saying anything of the sort on her Sunday show, then it was all over the papers the next day. There's a lot of bollocks being spouted by Cowell's PR team over this.

Anyone who wants to make a lasting impression on music should be original and not want to be a clone of Elaine Page, for example.

In the fifties, someone asked Elvis Presley who he sounded like and he said 'I don't sound like nobody else!'

But, to be fair to Susan Boyle, I don't think she ever set out to be a clone of anybody. She just loves singing - it's her somewhat "dishevelled farmer's wife" image that has attracted all the media attention (and, no doubt, promoted heavily by the Cowell/ITV PR machine). I can't imagine a more modest and unassuming person appearing on any talent show like BGT.
