The Rolling Stones live at Knebworth, 1976. Three hours of very late night bliss (they came on late and weren't supposed to play beyond midnight but they did!) all under a clear Summer sky. Fab.

I've refrained from seeing the "modern" Who simply because there's only two of them left. (It's a bit like McCartney and Starr parading as The Beatles!). I saw The Who several times in the early 70s and they were just wonderful. I miss Keith Moon at the drums - he was a spectacle all of his own!

I know what you mean, but to see Daltrey and Townsend do their stuff, maybe for the last time (?), I just had to go.

There were a lot of young people in the crowd who had probably never seen The Who before.

Who else have you seen live?

I can't say what's the best gig, just a few of the most memorable when I was younger. Reading Festival featuring Thin Lizzy, must have been 1976 (?). Led Zeppelin in Edinburgh, might have been 1972ish. Wings the same year I think. The Jam in 1979ish. Gary Numan 1980ish. Robert Plant with Ricky Cool 1984ish.

The last 20 years I've not seen any big names in pop, but been to loads of local jazz and classical gigs.

The best most recent was Alison Krauss & Union Station last year at the Bridgwater Hall, wonderful concert. Favourites from the past would be Hue & Cry (all 3 times) Earth Wind & Fire, Billy Connoly (sp), Mike Harding (mid 70's), Barry White & Love unlimited orchestra (70+ piece)
The best live concert I never went to would have been Mezzoforte in '85-'86, I rang to see if there were any tickets left and the lady said "yes we've got plenty but they were on last night !" D'oh ! (the only thing I miss about the old Beeb Boards is the smilies !)

I think the most enjoyable gig I've been to was John Otway at The Royal Albert Hall back in 1998. He sold the place out, not bad for a "cult" artist and the self-proclaimed "Rock n roll's greatest failure" The whole day was great, travelling over from Northern Ireland the day previous we stayed with the folks in Kent then made our way up the next afternoon, drinking in the bars around the venue, filled with other Otway fanatics, walking to the Albert Hall being hassled by ticket touts (at an Otway gig!!!) getting to our seats 4 rows back and seeing the man himself performing with his brilliant Big Band as well as the Aylesbury Youth Orchestra and guest appearances from Wild Willy Barrett and Wilko Johnson, not only a brilliant gig we also somehow managed to get into the after show party in a big function room in the venue, meeting John and the band for the umpteenth time and also Wilko, Norman Watt-Roy, Stephen Frost and Paul Bradley of Eastenders/Holby City fame. We ended the night at about 3am standing out the back of the grand old place helping the band load their gear into their transit van. A day I'll never forget!

The Yardbirds & Manfred Mann, 1966, I think. Both were excellent, but the Yardbirds were just out of this world, well what do you expect with Jeff Beck on lead, Jimmy Page on rhythm & bass with Chris Dreja alternating on rhythm & bass.
Have been to lots of gigs since, Hamish Immlach in 68 was hilarious, Wembly Country Music Festival 69, especially going back stage and talking to Conway Twitty, Loreta Lynn & George Hamilton IV.
Most recently, Band From County Hell, December 2006, amazing night, & it was free.

Cloin Blunstone and Rod Argent at Springhead a couple of years ago. It was a small venue and suited their style. It contained some new stuff, some of Colin's solo stuff ( Say you don't mind, I don't believe in Miracles), Some of Argent's ( Hold your head up, God gave rock and roll to you) plus some old Zombies numbers.

Excellent

Wishbone ash and Sky ( both at Hull City Hall, but not at the same time)

I never saw Colin Blunstone live, but I do remember when he was touring a few years ago, Suddenly songs I hadn't heard in a long time were being regularly played on R2, viz 'I Don't Believe in Miracles' on Alex Lester's show (I was on an early shift then) later the same day 'Say You Don't Mind' on Jeremy Vine's show, and again the following Saturday on Jonathan Ross' show with the remark that he sounded more like a woman. I once made the same mistake after hearing Smokie Robinson's 'Shop Around'! Embarassed

Remarks like that from JR are to be expected.

Sir Cliff Richard at the Newcastle upon Tyne Arena on 29 November 2006.

Coming up--Joan Armatrading, Dolly Parton and Meatloaf.

In the meantime I'm also going to classical concerts at the Gateshead Sage. Beethoven's Emperor, amongst other works, on Friday.

Ian.
