An enjoyable day's listening today (Tues) and all this week thanks to (a) Johnnie Walker hosting breakfast and (b) Richard Allinson hosting afternoons. In relation to the latter, it was nice to hear Richard's intelligent and informed interview with Stephen Frears on the subject of his career as one of the UK's best film directors. I can't see things being that interesting were it to have been Steve Wright conducting the interview, somehow.

Anyhow, it's 5.00pm now so alternative listening has to be sought, unfortunately.

Colby you should count yourself lucky that R2 has given you 5 hours of agreeable Radio. I don’t see why it is unfortunate that one of the programmes today (amounting to only 10 hours a week out of the 168 hours of transmission) is not to your liking. That is the way of things – some things “we” like – some things “we” don’t, but “we” all like different things. I don’t care much for baked potatoes; there’s a chap in the high street here – sells baked potatoes, sometimes there’s a queue , I’m never in it, but I smile and say hello on my way past.

Had a (rare) pleasant day with my feet up at home today - and even found time to have to look here to see how everyone is! Actually enjoyed listening to R2 for a change - that hasn't happened for a while. After RA finished, couldn't bear to end it on a downer so Listened Again to his Record Producers show on 10cc from last night, then put Bob's show from Saturday night on afterwards.

I'm happy and contented now.

Yes, there's actually quite a lot to listen to on iPlayer at 5.00pm weekdays, I have to say. I have yet to hear the 10cc programme but I very much look forward to it. 5.00pm tomorrow it might well be, therefore!

Steve Wright has always been a good interviewer. There are no wrongs or rights about interviewing, as long as the listeners enjoy all that matters.

"Steve Wright has always been a good interviewer"

Mmm, that statement has to be rejected as preposterous. The only thing SW is interested in is himself, which hardly qualifies him as a good interviewer.

Not really Colby. Your praise of presenter A is valid only when it’s not a thinly disguised dig at presenter B.

I don't agree. The object of an interview is to enable the audience to learn something they didn't know before - and it's the interviewer's job to facilitate that process to best effect. Wright's interviews are often self-centred and self-serving.

The quality of an interview is generally improved if the interviewer either has a knowledge of the matter under discussion - either as a result of a personal interest or a willingness to undertake some research. This was proven by Richard Allinson's discussion with Stephen Frears - his own love of Frears' work came through in the interview, and that gave it added interest. (Well, it did to me, anyhow).

Steve Wright often demonstrates a lack of interest in his subjects, and that's why he messes about with silly one-liners and stupid gimmicks like pre-recorded SFX like whoops and applause.

Steve Wrights show is an entertainment show. He has done this type of interviews for many years. I can't see what the problem is as he attracts over 5 million listeners. If you have a complaint then email the controller?

Who has said it's a "complaining" issue? I've just stated that in my opinion Richard Allinson conducted an interview that was of a much more professional standard than one would expect of Wright in the same situation. That's my opinion and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Wright is simply not capable of conducting interviews with guests in the same manner simply because he leans toward the trivial. That's why he has his studio posse and a pile of SFX.

Allinson just does it better. That's my opinion. If it's not yours that's fine - I can live with it, the same as I can put up with people who get off on listening to the insufferable one day-in and day-out. Whatever, eh?

I love it when Johnny sits in for Sir Tel and really enjoy his shows.
Although I like Richard, I feel that he plays far too much bland music for my liking, such as Enrique Iglesias etc.
I just wish he would dig out some great old tunes or some stuff that you don't often hear like Johnny does in the mornings

I don't think Richard played any bland music this past week.

The music he plays is always better than the music the incumbent normally plays. He also tends not to talk over the beginning or fade out any song he plays.

You can never leave out Girls Aloud when Rich is on duty. Don't forget Sony Awards with Richard on 11th May.

I like Girls Aloud. They're alright in my book! So it's good to see that Richard has good taste like wot I has.

I'm not bothered about the Sony awards though. It's only of importance to people who work in radio as a means of back-slapping each other - it's not important to the rest of us really. Especially if "the unmentionable one" is involved!

I enjoyed the Record Producers episode on 10cc - I'm listening to the extended version from Saturday as I write.
