Says a lot about the homogenous quality of the songs on her current album, that they pick as follow-up to Love Story a track from her last album (it was shoe-horned into the UK release of the new one to help sell it).
Actually I don't dislike the girl's stuff, and my wife actually does like it, but I can't help feeling that it's a work of production and marketing first, and song and melody quality second.
The current album has been top of the US Country chart for more than six months. Not that that means very much - the current No1 over there, according to Billboard, is Hannah Montana, and that really is a case of never mind the quality feel the noise _________________ Ron |

It may not have been officially released in the UK but it was freely available at UK prices. I bought mine from Amazon - the only album I've bought from there on import or the States was Willie Nile. It's more country flavoured - the new one is almost pure pop. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not really special. IMO.
Incidentally, I first heard her (and sought the first album out as a result) when Alex Lester played "Tim McGraw". _________________ Ron |

Hi Ron. I'm hoping to hear the new Willie Nile CD shortly 'House of 1000 guitars.' My daughter works in NYC and I gave her a list of CDs to get me, including Willie, Bertie Higgins new CD and the Hank Williams Radio shows, plus any Country CDs except Taylor Swift, Sugarland and Lady Antebellum who I think are all dreadful and not Country at all. |

Hi Briant. Was it you who put me onto Willie Nile a year or so ago?
He'd gone off my radar until this evening, and I'm so glad to see that that new album has a UK release - his website isn't available at the moment, but four tracks are playing, in full, on his myspace site http://www.myspace.com/willienile and they rock your socks off. Amazon has the CD for £9.98 so I've pounced (i-tunes have it for downloading at £7.99).
Sugarland are a Guilty Pleasure - they're so badly OTT they're funny; ditto Big and Rich. _________________ Ron |

Hi Ron. Yes, it was me that mentioned Willie Nile on this MB. Since then I sent him a poem called 'The Ballad of Willie Nile and Frankie Lee', based on the Dylan song that you may know. My daughter has met him a few times since and sent me his last album (and DVD) 'Streets of New York.'
Willie Nile and another very literate US singersongwriter Elliott Murphy (based in Europe these days) are my choices of the current crop. |

I too had Taylor swifts first album. I find it fun to know these guys music for years before anyone else here. I recall when Shania first crossed over here. i'd been playing her music for ages. When she first broke here, people turned to me & said, "you know that girl you were always playing, she's famous!"
Same thing with Taylor Swift. I got a friend of mine her first two CDs.
Next time he came to me & said "I've been reading about her everywhere!" He said i should be a talent scout! ha ha |

Hi Clive. I saw your letter about Taylor Swift in CMP. If she is the future of Country Music then count me out, I'll stick with Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, Johhny Paycheck, Tammy Wynette, Connie Smith etc. I think Taylor Swift will have her day and then 'swiftly' be forgotten. |

Hi Briant
I rekon Taylor swift will be around for a long while, especially as a songwriter. Beyond her current period as superstar, I see a long term future for her as a songwriter penning hit songs in both country and pop.
There have always been many strands to country music.
And the success of one strand- the crossover sound- does not dictate the death of the other- traditional country
At the time when Jim reeves & Patsy Cline were making waves people talked about the death of (tradional) country.
that never happened. For every Taylor Swift there is an alan Jackson & a Gretchen Wilson |
