Is there somewhere to be able to listen to this again.

No unfortunately you can't, as it's a Live Webcast and no catchup available.

I wonder if Richard is on duty for the rest of this week.

Surely the BBC must be getting concerned about the fitness/well-being of Sarah Kennedy in this slot.

People can't help being sick and Sarah gets the dreaded cold quicker than anyone else. I can't see the BBC sacking someone for being ill? Being in the public eye on the radio, must be making Sarah upset, and the bosses at Radio 2 wonder?

What about when it comes to contract renewal time? No obligations there.

I don't know what you're on about there, Mark. But shouldn't that be "public ear" where radio's concerned?

Mark O-your last post is fairly similar to one posted by somebody else on Digital Spy.

Still the good news is Richard Allinson is back on duty again on Tuesday.

I don't think she'd be freelance, at least in the strictest sense of the word. If she was really a freelancer she would in theory be free to do a programme on Classic FM, or Gold, or something.

Not true. The majority of "celebs" (as well as many production staff) are now on fixed-term freelance contracts. As such, those contracts are subject to review. At some stage, SK's contract will come to an end, by which time her employer (the BBC) will decide to renew it on terms agreed with her agent or not. It's literally as simple as that.

mark occomore wrote:
But being on a contract is viewed as being 'freelance' - although such people will be tied exclusively to the BBC/Radio 2.

It depends entirely on the terms of the contract. If a person is a sole trader then she or he will have Tax and PAYE deducted at source - particularly if she/he is tied to that employer for the duration. However, some presenters (eg: Jonathan Ross) are employed by companies in which they have a stake (eg: Open Mike Productions Ltd) and there's a chance that Ross's contributions are billed via that company. It's certainly true of others.

mark occomore wrote:
I don't think this is the case with Sarah Kennedy though, so she's probably on a Radio 2 contract directly. Although if the health thing is recurrent and goes back a while, then i'd imgaine her present contract to take this into account in some way. So I'd be surprised if she gets paid when she's off sick.

The Working Time Directive (WTD) provides for statutory sick pay for employees, whether they're directly employed or not.

In the case of SK I think it's clear cut; if she faffs around too much then come next contract renewal she'll be out on her ear. The Beeb isn't obliged to renew her contract once it's expired - and nor should it be.

Sarah has been moaning a bit about her fall when she got off the plane on her last holiday. It's not really a big issue when she goes off sick as the operation doesn't stop. The only problem is someone else has to cover, which I guess Richard A doesn't mind? I just feel Sarah gets ill quicker than anyone else, but that's a private matter.

Anyway we can enjoy Richards playlists Wink Yes I guess he chooses his own songs.

It's either that or dead air.

Given that he gets a fee for so doing (in fact he'll get a fee for being on standby whether he's called in or not) I can't imagine that he minds!

"Continuity" is a matter for the station's managers and listeners, though. It's happening too often.

It's not just continuity of the presenter's presence, important though this is (presenters with personality build relationships with their listeners). It's also about continuity in the format. While I'm no great lover of the show tunes feature, I know a great many are. So why, when Richard Allinson is sitting in at short notice, does he replace with show tunes with his air guitar feature? It hardly appeals to the same audience and I'm not even sure it's right at 7.15am (though it would be fun in a mid-afternoon show).

Some changes for programmed stand-ins can work well (Mark Radcliffe doing CD CV springs to mind), but this one seems particularly out of place.

It's got nothing to do with the listener.

It has everything to do with the listener. If listeners get fed up with the constant breaks in continuity then the programmers will have to act. Simple.

It's debatable whether what the listeners feelings are about Sarah whether the show should continue. My guessing the show will continue with Sarah until such time Wogan retires? The average listener only thinking she's sick and don't really care because they enjoy her banter.

Of course, there are others who think she's sick and who don't enjoy her silly banter. Swings and roundabouts, really.

Nice to have Sarah back. Sounds like she had a very nasty bout of illness. Let's hope she now has a prolonged period of good health - we all know how miserable it can be when we're unwell.

I only heard that last 3 minutes or so. Can't remember what the music was that she played - but I do recall that she talked all over it.

I have noticed that the only track she doesn't talk over is the one played as 'Showtime'!

Sarah Kennedy should drop the ridiculous show tunes feature and replace it with an "air guitar feature" which Richard Allinson brought to the Dawn Patrol Show when he covered for her a while ago.

As she knows nothing, or cares about music, perhaps she could run a "live" feature re e-mail votes asking the listener to nominate the song or would that be too difficult for her.

Oh I quite like the show tune, Mark. Air Guitar, although a lot of fun in the kitchen, isn’t really an “in bed” activity.

It’s true I’ve not always been a fan of Sarah K but she has, over the last year or so, won me over. She’s fab, and the music is too. I think her show is the best day-time show on R2 at the moment.
Richard Allinson fills in for so many shows he’s like an irritating rash on the radio; other than reading out text messages, it’s difficult to define what “his show” actually is. Come Christmas or the summer holidays he’s on everywhere, in a, oh come on! Not him AGAIN kind of way.

Let's think... what am I usually doing at Showtime?

No, Air Guitar won't improve my life at that time, it'll make it very messy Embarassed

To be fair to him, that's partly because he is always a cover, often a last-minute one. His new, regular, shows will be his (last) opportunity to carve a niche for himself, show us some of his real personality and imagination, and give us something that's different.

Don't get me wrong, Richard A is a decent enough cove, it's just he's been over exposed on R2 - especially over last Christmas. There's nothing unique about him or his style - he's just another, nice, run of the mill jock. I can remember his Saturday Show which was ok but nothing to get excited about. He's just a bit too sticky for me.

At five feet ten and at the peak of physical fitness- I rate my chances as better than average... Laughing
Having a pop at me may make Mark feel better, but it won't make Richard A, sound any better.

As far as the DP is concerened, Sarah K is the right person for the job.

Of course, MIS, everything I write on here about any show on R2 is subject to my unwritten but universally applicable rider – “ It would be much better if Alex did it”.

Again this morning fab music on the DP.
