This is the length of time it took to drive home from North Devon on Friday.

I'm not that bothered about music on the move, so my wife's favourites occupy the car CD player - McFly, Beach Boys, Monkees, Police, Simply Red. However, after a week of that diet even she felt the need for change, and I needed to check on possible major delays on the road ahead, so switched to Radio 2.

From 3.45 on Steve Wright's show there was an awful lot of laughter going on, but for the life of me I couldn't find anything remotely funny about what was being said.

Perhaps it was Sally Traffic's report that mentioned delays on the M5 between junctions 8 and 7 in Worcestershire, but neglected to say that the traffic was at a standstill at junction 23 which, due to the bend in the slip road, you didn't notice until you were committed (although some idiots tried to reverse, or even U-turn and go back up the wrong way!).

I found an old, neglected 60s compilation - The Troggs, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Steppenwolf, Paul Mauriat - to keep us going for a bit.

6.30 and Evans Interesting Gadget - which was - the temperature controlled butter dish. Three favourites to close - Ian Dury, Beatles Drive My Car and The Monkees - wife couldn't believe he talked all over it.

About this time we sailed through junctions 8 and 7 at 70mph

7.00 and you needed to turn the volume up, a lot, because Petula Clark's narration of the Charles Aznovoice story seemed to have been recorded in a library.

7.30 Friday Night Is Music Night, and it was like turning the clock back 50 years, with the BBC Concert Orchestra playing light music and two theatrical singers, and Aled Jones doing the introductions standing in an echo chamber. Mind you, fifty years ago you wouldn't have heard an "electric string quartet", at least not a female one with anyone under the age of 60, or heard them playing anything by Karl Jenkins, The Beatles or Led Zepellin!

I know what you mean about the BIG Show- it always feels like they are having much more fun than the listeners are- like being in a restaurant on your own after having been stood-up, with a fab looking party going on "over there" but which after a while serves only to remind you that nothing can be that much fun especially when you are not involved.

Friday drivetime is a request show, my guess is that they like to cram in as many requests as possible between the features, so a bit of talking over the tracks helps maybe to get one or two more requests on air. Keeping the customer happy. The travel reports are good but I wonder how old the information is sometimes. Sally T would be better off just saying at the top of the show- " if you're driving- it's hell out there" then spend the rest of her time chatting to Chris about- well: anything really- they are so good together. After 7pm - no radio - Channel 4 news- Jon Snow's tie and socks win every time. Smile

Yeah, it's a request show, so if I rang in to get song played, I'd be miffed to hear Evans talking over the end of it. Surely he doesn't give a damn about the music because he does it to every song played, not just one or two. Wouldn't it be better to get one or two songs less on, and to hear them in full, rather than have 2 more and let the Ego walk all over them?!

I had an awful day at work on Friday (3/7/09) and finished really late which meant I caught all of the Ginger One's request show.

Apart from the continual interruptions to go on about the car trip thing- which was fair enough, to be honest- (it was a special event on behalf of CiN) he seemed to play all the requests pretty much all the way through.

So he's either been peeking at this board and taking note of the justifiable critisism , (why do a request show if you're gonna talk all over the songs) or he's been spoken to by a higher authority and been told to rein-back the lip on a Friday.

At the very least, it gave me a chance to howl incredibly badly (it's what passes for my version of singing) through the tunes selected Cool
