Seeing as the show is now up and running I thought I'd start a thread which maybe we can add to as the weeks go on like we do on SOTS.

I guess most of us will be listening via the iPlayer and maybe in bits as it's 3 hours long, but it's sounding good so far! Very Happy

He seems to be taking some things from his other shows, 3 of the Best from an album etc.

Good laid back listening though!

Richard, Zoe and Emma shows are an obvious candidate for i player or DAB recording to play later on in the day. Wink

Yes a good start- seems to have carried across much from Allinsons Albums on BBC Radio Oxford -perhaps because the programme is an independent production - from RA's own production company perhaps ?

One point however- is this programme live ? Not that it matters but if it was recorded as live might explain why a seasoned broadcaster like RA was happy to do the shows. I listened from 5.00 am and in the final hour I cannot recall one time check . The closest we got was a visit from Zoe Ball , which could also have been recorded when RA referred to the start of her new programme in 8 minutes approximately ! OK there were
some e-mails read out but they could have been sent in earlier in the week. RA made a point of saying there was no one on the phones- a contrast to Mo Dutta's shows when the phone number was always promoted but also suggests the programme was not live.
I cannot believe that RA with his experience on the Dawn Patrol would not have forgotten how important time checks are to people up early in the morning- even at the weekend. A bit more difficult to do if you are recording the programme on a Wednesday afternoon !
I think cost savings at the BBC could be behind this.

I think it was live because I heard at least one time check.

I have listened to both weekend shows live myself (i'm very tired now!) and I do think Richard was in the studios in person-ie not pre-recorded but now you mention it I can't recall many time checks made.

Not sure if my future listening will be live as I will need to change my wekend sleeping pattern completely.

Anyhow 2 great shows, great music played etc.

Do I detect that you are missing Pete Mitchell's time checks?!

No Scott.

Pete Mitchell-never a fan I'm afraid-sadly he couldn't string a complete sentence together without tripping over himself.

You mentioned that Richard Allinson didn't do many time checks - something Pete Mitchell often did. I'm not too sure about Mo Dutta, though, as he spent most of his time prattling on about, well, nothing really.

It was annoying to hear Mo rambling on about something unimportant, and ten minutes later he was still rambling on about the same subject.

Clearly Bob did not rate either Pete Mitchell or Mo Dutta.

I certainly think his shake up of the weekend schedules are very refreshing-having listened to all 3 new presenters and their shows I think these new shows are great.

I can see him making more changes over the coming months (hopefully) to the daytime schedules.

Certainly I am delighted Richard is back in the family on Radio 2 as a permanent fixture.

Allinson rocks-you bet he does.

I often wondered why weekend overnights had two different presenters. I think Pete is a much better presenter than Mo, though I am surprised Pete was not offered a much better slot on Radio 2 - or 6 Music.

There are a few more changes I would like to happen to the weekend schedule. Richard Allinson being reinstated to Saturday afternoons, in place of Dermot O'Leary, is one of them.

So can I, as I think Simon Mayo will be joining Radio 2 before 2011 - and will replace Ken Bruce.

Lesley Douglas clearly didn't rate Richard Allinson much, did she?

The "two different presenters" format is in the history.

The night time programmes used to come from Birmingham. Pete Mitchell used to take over from the late night presenter for the middle of the night, then Mo would do the early breakfast show. Times varied to suit SOTS starting at 8am and GMS at 7am, but that was the structure.

Then the move to London happened last year. For a while the structure remained the same, but a year ago the schedules changes. We got a repeated specialist programme as a filler in the middle of the night and Mo covered Saturday, with Pete doing Sunday. I suspect that this was as much about meeting the logistical needs of Midlands-based part-time presenters as it was about Radio 2's needs.

I don't think it was coincidence that the new programmes finished a year after the Mo/Pete split changed; Mo and Pete's contracts must have been one-year long and were simply not renewed.

Whether the Zoe/Emma split is any more sensible than the Mo/Pete on was is a moot point. I'll not comment on either programme for a while yet - I don't think either format has settled yet, though I think Zoe's chat that I heard was rather more female orientated in its subject matter than Mo's chats were with Simon Calder and Jim Bacon. Since I'm not female, that's one step in the wrong direction from my point of view!

Oh, and I preferred Mo to Pete, but I'm also surprised that neither were used more on 6 Music. I know Mo has other commitments that might have limited this option, but Pete? Pete has a reputation for good broadcasting that didn't materialise into anything solid for me on Radio 2. I do wonder if he would have done better in the less restrictive atmosphere of 6 Music. An opportunity missed? I suspect he would have been a better choice than George Lamb...

Rob.

From the long running thread on the 6 music message boards I'd say a good proportion of the 6 music audience would say Amen to that!

I am surprised that Pete Mitchell was never offered a permanent slot on Radio 2. He would have been ideal on the weekday evening slot (Gideon Coe should never have been replaced with George Lamb).

One thing that is slightly disappointing about Richard's time slot on at the weekends is that I guess he has not going to be able to have any guests on his show for interviews-after all who would want to be interviewed in the middle of the night!

Still hopefully when Chris Evans takes over the breakfast show sometime soon Richard will be moved to the weekday Drivetime Show.

Do you think Chris Evans could carry the breakfast show now? he has been quite consistent with his attendance now and doesnt appear in the gossip columns too much with his drinking antics Wink

I don't think Chris Evans wants to do the breakfast show- just a feeling but there it is. He seems happy with drivetime- and why not, it's a great show.

I finally got around to checking out Richard A on the I-player. Good music and chat , but just not quite enough madness, that though will come with time Smile I wonder if Richard had learned off by heart all the live listeners yet.

I don't think Wogan will leave yet, as the BBC would shed out to trail his show.

When I listen again does it count Laughing Zoe mentioned this morning that she used to ring in to request songs when Richard worked at the other station.

Yes I heard that too.

The chemistry/handover is very good between Richard and Zoe-lots of mutual respect etc.

I do like the fact that Richard invites Zoe onto his show asking her "so what's happening today then Zoe".

The days of a good handover seem to be diminishing.

Why isn't there a handover from Bob Harris to Richard Allinson on Sunday morning-is the Bob Harris show pre-recorded.

I do like the feature the Great British Songbook which is on 5-6am on the Saturday Morning Show.

Richard plays some really fantastic music and provides great info about the artists/songs featured.

In a brief period of wakefulness at something past five I heard him say some nonsense about Steve Harley's version of Here Comes The Sun, and then he played George's dreary Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth). Sleep quickly returned.

It was not nonsense Ron.

Richard was simply inviting folk to let me know under the Great British Songbook Heading of songs reworked that MIGHT be better than the original.

Richard simply played a request by some guy advising the remake of Here Comes The Sun By Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel was better than the original written by George Harrison. He did not comment as to whether it was better than the version by the Beatles.

I wonder if Richard has any plans to bring back the Wall of Sound feature to his weekend shows.

It would be great if he did.

NB-Still no handover from Bob Harris to Richard on Saturday nights-not even a mention by Bob about what is coming next /after his show.

Either Bob has lost his manners or his Saturday night show is not going out live but is instead pre-recorded. Even dear old Brian Matthews who pre records his SOTS Saturday show makes reference to the fact that JR is next/after his show.
