NB-Still no handover from Bob Harris to Richard on Saturday nights-not even a mention by Bob about what is coming next /after his show.
Either Bob has lost his manners or his Saturday night show is not going out live but is instead pre-recorded. Even dear old Brian Matthews who pre records his SOTS Saturday show makes reference to the fact that JR is next/after his show. |
I doubt Bob has lost his manners. I too suspect his shows may now be recorded. Once upon a time you got a webcam view of Bob doing his Saturday-into-Sunday show from the same studio that Sarah Kennedy & Ken Bruce use. This has rarely happpened since his long sick leave a year or two ago. Now the webcam is either stuck on the previous webcammed show or you get the 'testcard'. I've also noticed the lack of E-mails that get read out. Not even sure that he reads out the address anymore. For all that I still think it's a good show. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Still no hand over/mention by Bob that Richard follows his show.
I guess Bob 's show must be pre-recorded. |

Anybody on here been tuning into the Richard Allinson shows lately.
Still the best radio experience of the week by a mile on Radio 2.
I wonder if Richard is still going to be considered as cover for other presenters on Radio 2.
I can't see any reason why he should not be used as cover for Janice Long and Alex Lester in the future. |

Great to hear that Red Baron.
Yes lots of great features on Richard's weekend shows.
I particularly like the 3.46am feature-I am a proud member!
Above all else Richard plays just fantastic music-no other show comes close on Radio 2 imho re the mix/ various genres played. |

I wish he was on at a more convenient time, but I will catch up on Listen Again now that I have read these recent postings. I'm off tomorrow so will be catching Allinson's Albums on BBC Radio York in the afternoon! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I note that there is still no handover from Bob Harris to Richard Allinson on Saturday nights/mornings.
Has Bob not got any manners-what's his problem-he does not even mention that Richard Allinson is on next. Is Bob's show pre-recorded.
Yet when Richard comes on he also says "thank you Bob etc". |

Yes that's true, but there are so few that are listen-able to my poor ears.
Richard Allison is at the top of MY list with Johnnie Walker, Stuart Maconie and Bob Harris. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

If Bob adds in saying Richard Allinson is next and then it's not sounds a little bad. Although Brian Matthews says Jonathan Ross is next, and SOTS are recorded. I don't think it's a big issue. |

I thought the hour or so Richard devoted to the Great Song book feature of great songs that only made it to no 2 in the charts recently was excellent/thought provoking.
He kept asking "his listener" can you remember the No 1 song that kept this great song off the top of the charts.
I could see this feature having more legs-maybe a whole Bank Holiday show devoted to the concept/idea. |

Something similar has been run on SOTS.

Thanks Rob.
Have to say have not listened to SOTS in about 5 years-the presenter/format of the show bores the pants off me.
Will tune in again no doubt once the presenter is changed.
Are you able to provide detail about the format on SOTS of great no 2's held off from the top of the charts by less than than great No 1's. |

I've not listened closely to SOTS for a while, so my memory is a little distant - please forgive me if I've got this wrong. But I think they started on 1st January 1960 and each week played the next record that peaked at number two, followed by the record(s) that kept it off number one. They might even have reached 31st December 1969 by now and dropped the feature!

I didn't think it was a chronological sequence. Anyway, it's now Stuck On 2 USA, so it's a record which never quite made the top spot in the Billboard chart, followed by the one which kept it off - on Saturday the Music Explosion's Little Bit O' Soul followed by Frankie Valli's Can't Take My Eyes Off You (neither of which made the British chart). _________________ Ron |

Really. I can't see the format would change if there was someone else presenting it. I can't understand your way of thinking about every show needs a radical change of presenter, because it doesn't suit the person presenting it? Please could you Mark M, explain to us all how you would change SOTS format to make it sound to your liking? |

Good to see Richard acknowledging a mistake last Saturday night at the end of his show.
Richard has a feature of playing 3 of the best from a particular album.
Richard was supposed to play 3 songs from the upcoming new greatest hits album from Queen.
At the end of the show he apologised for only playing 2 of the 3.
Even the greatest DJ on the planet can make an occasional mistake. |

A more pertinent comment would have been, why does the world want yet another Queen Greatest Hits album, and what's he doing plugging it (and wasting time playing over-familiar tracks)?
(Tip for anyone who may like but has not yet got Queen's Greatest Hits CDs - go to play.com for the box set of volumes I,II and III, costing just 2p more than the new single CD which EMI is releasing in November) _________________ Ron |

Ron-Richard features both new and old albums for his 3 of the best feature-he invites his "listener" to nominate albums from their collections for this feature.
On the new album front he featured the new upcoming album (not out until November I believe) from Prefab Sprout last weekend. Earlier today he featured 3 songs from the late Marvin Gaye's album-What's Going On.
By the way he did complete the Queen 3 of the best-3rd song into today's shows-A crazy little thing called love-he offered his apologies again. |

D'accord. It's just that I thought a DJ of Allinson's experience and calibre might have found from among the avalanche of pre-Christmas album issues one which was of more artistic merit than commercial exploitation. After all, it's not as if he doesn't play Queen every other week of the year.
Prefab Sprout's album is already out, by the way. It sounds good - all it needs is a good tune. _________________ Ron |

One of the features Richard has on his Saturday night show is 1 hour (5-6am) dedicated to artists/songs from the "Great British Songbook".
For one week only, this coming Saturday, Richard is changing the regular feature to the Great Scottish Songbook. So for all your folk North of the Border this feature is especially for you-(indeed are there any posters on here who are Scottish?) |
