As those who enjoy light music will know, December 2007 will see the 50th anniversary of the death of Eric Coates.

In 1986 R2 marked the centenary of his birth with an excellent series of 4 docu-type programmes narrated by his son Austin (who has since died).

I don't suppose there's any chance that these could be re-run--or a new series commissioned.

Ian.

Hi Ian,

Anything suggestion by us of Light Music on Radio 2 will have to rely on Lesley wanting that genre on her station Rolling Eyes

Now, we have had a mail from Tony Brown saying that Richard Baker will have some future work at Radio 2. He's a bit old now for compereing FNIMN so maybe he is going to get the odd light music spot on the docu slots.

Any news of Brian Kay's future?

Attached is a link to an article about Richard Baker done a couple of years ago.

In it he says " a common misperception of me is ...
Probably that I'm a very serious person. I'm not serious, but people think I am".

Brian Kay would in fact be an excellent person to do an Eric Coates mini-series.

I knew that somewhere in the past there was a thread dedicated to Eric Coates, but I didn't think I'd have to go back two years to find it! Well, although this kind of music isn't really my scene, I thought folk who didn't see this evening's The One Show would like to know that there was an artical devoted to Eric Coates. I'm probably most familiar with his TV / Radio themes.

LEE,

Trying to find my way round the One Show pages and the latest show playing on iplayer. Are you referring to the episode with Jerry Hall?

Hello John,
I think Jerry Hall was on Monday, yesterday's was Frank Skinner. Here's the link to the 'Watch again'. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007tcw7 It does seem to take longer to become available than the radio shows for some reason. I do tend to forget that!

As it's nearly that time of they year, what better than to have a resurrection.

Brian Kay narrates this and Eric features a fair bit. Wonderful stuff.

Hello Ian
Thank you so much for posting the link to that delightful 2005 programme which I have just watched. I hadn't seen it before. It was great to see and hear from John Wilson and also to see clips of Robert Farnon.
Lovely music.

A few years ago there were several Radio 2 programmes of, and about, light music which I taped on cassettes. I must look them out. I absolutely love the signature tune of "Housewives' Choice".

All those old light music favourites are such treasures.

It seems that The Story Of Light Music was half of a two-part series, with this being the second programme.

A Little Light Music - Friday Night Is Music Night

Compered by the much missed Roy Hudd, from the Mermaid Theatre.
