Brilliant idea. The BBC asking people at random what music they are listening to and making a sort of jukebox.
Sadly the presenter Danny wallace is clueless. endlessly trying to appear cool, i found him quite irritating.
And then he asked a woman what music she liked. She said music of the 70's as she found it more cheerful & cited "Spirit In The Sky". Danny clearly didn't like that, so he asked her what else, & she said Band of Gold by freda Payne. Danny liked that & introduced it as a song reflecting a more cheerful, happy attitude.
"Band of Gold" is in fact a very sad song about impotence. Her husband on their wedding night was unable to make love to her & left the hotel room, both of them in tears .
Hardly a cheerful song!

I think this was a great idea, but it could have been much better
Did anyone else hear it? Am i being too hard on the presenter & the show?

Band of Gold evokes very happy memories for me. In fact, it had exactly the opposite effect on me but perhaps I should type quietly because the wife's nearby!

Still, i was peed the presenter did not want to play Spirit In The Sky. That was a cracking tune & it is the one the woman he asked wanted to hear!! It also better spoke about the spirit of optimism she was talking about

I was thinking the same thing when 'Band Of Gold' came on. I too didn't think anything about the lyrics until a DJ I know told me that they really weren't about a couple's happy day, but about a marriage that has gone wrong. And, despite his telling couples that, they still wanted it played at their wedding disco.

We kissed after taking vows
But that night on our honeymoon
We stayed in separate rooms

I wait in the darkness of my lonely room
Filled with sadness, filled with gloom
Hoping soon that you'll walk
Back through that door
And love me like you tried before

Since you've been gone
All that's left is a band of gold

Why wouldn't he play "Spirit In The Sky" I wonder?
Is it going to be the nations playlist as long as it fits in with what they want to hear?
I think it's flawed anyway as 99% of the people I see who are wearing headphones are 25 and under, so it's not going to be a fair representation

Exactly. It would be more sensible to just ask people at random what music they enjoy. Just because they're not walking around with headphones, doesn't mean they don't ever listen to music!

I remember Stuart Maconie pondering on the lyrics of this song - he couldn't fathom them. So there we go, there's something you know about music that Maconie doesn't. By eck.
