ITV are having a tough time at present. Are people not watching the news programmes like people are watching Sky and BBC. Is ITV going to start to charge people to watch certain shows to gain more money? It's the advertising recession and ITV are losing out to the BBC. This is why they are calling upon to use some share of the BBC Licence.

Since the merger of the component businesses that made up what we used to call "ITV" in favour of the now "ITV Plc" the network has made some really stupid decisions. The acquisition of Friendsreunited was just one silly action that many experts advised against. As for programming, ITV has also made mistakes - even with Michael Grade at the helm. Now that he's thrown in the towel it's anybody's guess where things are heading - but the company's failure to keep up with - or even take a lead - with new media technology in the way that the BBC has is now costing it dear. You only have to look at how the BGT clips of Susan Boyle's performance were exploited on YouTube on the clip with ITV not getting a penny in royalties - under the horse had bolted and they then had to grovel with YouTube for a deal. Utterly ridiculous. The fact is the whole media space is changing almost by the day - but you wouldn't know this by looking at the ITV channels.

Of course, the primary cause is the failure to attract spot-ad and sponsorship revenues; this isn't really the network's fault. Ad agencies are putting their clients' money into other forms of advertising and promotion - solical networking websites, viral marketing and mobile comms are the new markets. Traditional TV advertising is doomed........ and so is the model that we now call ITV.

They don't do themselves any favours by trying to attract younger, Facebook-obsessed audiences at a time when it's the over-50s market (there are now more pensioners than under-21s) that has the disposable income.

ITV deserves everything it gets. I just feel sorry for the hard-working staff - technicians, presenters, production staff - who have been strung a line by the company for so long now and given their all only to be told that they're going to be kicked out.

RIP ITV Plc.

They don't do themselves much favours employing idiots like Fiona Phillips either.

Mark

ITV is a free to air channel, and they can't charge you for watching any of their programmes. They have to make their money from advertising and with the programmes they are putting out plus the economic situation, advertisers are watching their purse strings as much the rest and cutting back.

Not only that but they know that the audiences they're chasing the most are those that the ad agencies are reaching by other means. It's a big, wide multimedia world today and TV is only one place where agencies will part with their clients' money.

The web is a perfect example; it's really difficult to measure exactly who is influenced by one of your ads on TV but it's very easy indeed to track clicks coming from websites - whether users buy or not. TV just cannot provide that sort of data and that's why they're moving to the web.

Another thing is if there are 2 programmes clashing, I'll almost always record the ITV on and watch the Beeb's so I can fast forward through the ads. I won't be the only one who does it!

You certainly aren't, Helen. In fact, if my wife asks me to record something to our HDD recorder late at night I'm usually expected to edit out the ad breaks before she gets to see it as well!

I wouldn't mind (so much) if the commercial breaks weren't so frequent, long and intrusive. During ITV's flagship series like Foyle's War, Lewis, or Wuthering Heights last weekend, the opening credits are barely over before there's a break for adverts, and it was especially noticeable with WH that there was a break less than five minutes before the end of both instalments.

Some adverts are clever, some are funny, some make you want to throw bricks - "I want to do a poo in Paul's bathroom" is one of those!

ITV's income is almost exclusively its advertising and sponsorship, at rates which are directly linked to the audiences it pulls in. Apart from the soaps and X-Factor Dancing On Ice, these have been falling, partly because of the fragmentation of the market and partly because a lot (not all) of what else they put before us is just not good enough. Some advertisers are still spending - the food industry (manufacturers and supermarkets) spent £8billion in advertising and promotions last year and will do the same this year (Nestlé alone is spending £43million on its new campaign for Nescafé) but they are being more circumspect as to where they actually spend it.

Personally, I hardly ever watch anything on ITV - 99% of their output is dross. On the rare occasions when there is anything worth looking at, I too would SKY+ it and ff through the ads - I seldom watch ads on any channel anyway.

The 2 hour drama series are the worst offenders with the extended advert breaks. We recently got through one in 1hr.20 max.

As we were away at the weekend and for a couple of days this week (Whitby and then Newcastle) I recorded the two Wuthering Heights instalments to my HDD/DVD recorder.

Early this morning I checked the recordings and whilst doing so decided to edit out the ad breaks completely. This immediately reduced the running time by 12 minutes in each case!

When my wife gets to watch them she'll see no evidence whatever of ad breaks! (It must be love....).

ITV has become almost unwatchable because of the adverts, it can become difficult to follow a program there are so many of them.

I can't do that on my ( Panasonic ) DVD recorder unless I use RAM discs.. even then I'd have to create Chapters where the Ads are and delete those Chapters..

I have a Sony HDD/DVD combo and it can only be done on the HDD not DVD. It's useful for trimming recordings prior to compiling to DVD though.

I'd be very surprised if it was only 12 minutes, actually.

Each episode was 90 minutes long inclusive. The running time without ads according to imdb.com is 142 mins. 38 mins of adverts in total sounds more like it.

Each 2-hour story in the Lewis series is 93 minutes on DVD.

Apologies for going off subject, but did you enjoy your foray up north?

We loved it Angela. We have our own business and had scheduled a meeting with a prospective client in Newcastle, but we decided to make the most of our time in the north east by staying Whitby for a few days. We have friends who live in a cottage in the Esk valley so we spent time with them too. The weather was lovely and we had a great time being tourists! We found a fabulous little pub in a "lost" moorland village - it was like going back to the 1950s in that pub (apart from the prices, of course).

The hotel had free wi-fi too, which meant that I kept in contact with the outside world - but don't tell the wife!!!

Cool

Yes, our friends left their corporate jobs, left the rat race, risked every penny they had and bought a little business which pays them a modest income. They absolutely love the community of which they've ben a part for 6 years now and they're different people. We have so much respect for them.

Their village is like a real-life "Heartbeat" - it's stuck in the 1950s and 60s but nobody seems to have told them!

Good for them, we did the same in a way but we don't have our own business. My thinking is as long as I have got a pound more than I need to spend, I'm doing okay! Cool
