Yes, I know he said he did. But there's corporate politics at play here and with it a lot more people involved in the process, so who's to know what persuasive efforts have been at play. I can just picture Evans pacing up and down in the corridor outside the controller's office wandering when it's going to be his turn to play.

September the 7th Smile I did say way back to keep an eye on Sept 7th... and to watch out for a new format weekend with Wogan show. Oh how they mocked.

It's good that Sir Tel is changing down a gear- his new weekend gig will be fab, and with Chris in the charge of the Sausages and Muffins at breakfast time, we can only hope he doesn't get crumbs in the keyboard. It's not gonna be good for Chris' Cholesterol though..... Smile

They didn't mock so much as groan at the inevitability of it all.

Excellent news.

I've been saying for a long time Chris Evans will get the breakfast gig when Terry decides to stand down.

I think Chris will be very good on the breakfast show-hope they retime the schedules so that Chris starts a breakfast show somewhat earlier-say 6.30/7.00am.

I've been saying that it was a done deal from the day he was recruited to R2. It was obviously a long-term plan that was hatched by the former controller (another person who put her career over the tastes of the majority of the listening audience) and it's all been part of the plan.

How about even earlier - like midnight until 2.00am? That way I could continue to listen to the station at breakfast time!

Now that is a cracking idea!

The very idea of "wake up with Evans" is just unbearable.

Terry had to go at some point. He did a very nice farewell thingy just after the 8 o clock news
He will be missed, but at least the breaky show will be in good hands.
Maybe whispering Bob can take over Drivetime proceedings?

Im not too fussed that Evans is moving to Breakfast I never listen to breakfast other than when Johnnie Walker is on and I hope to god that they still intend to keep Johnnie on as cover. However, who will get the 5pm slot? Dull as dishwater Mayo? Do the decent thing BBC and give JW his old slot back and restore some proper DJ skills into the daytime line up. Expect the breakfast ratings to drop as listeners are woken up by Evans screaming and shouting and making stupid noises.

Maybe the ratings wont drop much because Evans will attract a new type of listener, principally from Commercial radio. But what about Wogan's listeners? Where are we to go? I fully realise that the BBC cares not a jot for anyone over 40, but there are going to be millions of listeners who just won't want Evans, and will either have the Today programme or Classic FM as a realistic if unsatisfactory alternative.

Madeinsurrey you are totally correct what about his current listeners they will have to stroll off to the same place Johnnie's listeners went when he left Drivetime. The BBC dont care about its current customers sorry listeners. Maybe they should just change the name to Radio 1 and a half and be done with it. Maybe then Radio 2 could be reformed with the DJ's and presenters along with the music its customers want.

Am quite happy for CE to take over the breakfast slot when Sir Tel goes.

I'm more interested in who will be displaced to make space for his weekend show.

The BBC Radio 2 management really don't care. That's obvious!

Its high time Radio 2 listeners started to make their feelings known to Radio 2 but then again would they listen, no they wouldnt. I once heard a regular radio 2 dj say that the radio 2 bosses dont listen to their customer/listeners

Maybe the board's name should be changed John as with many of us R2 is definitely NOT OK ?

Well it is ok with me, I look forward to hearing Chris in the new year.

I still don't see why people have to be so nasty, if you don't like his presentation style fair enough but name calling is totally unecessary.

By the way I thought it was a great choice for Terry to play his favourite song 'Stardust' just after his anouncement. I could just imagine any TOGs who were driving along at the time pulling over in their droves to wipe away the tears.

I too love "Stardust" - but any tears were of regret for the stupidity of BBC management.

Tell me where I've been nasty Toggy? I can't stand his voice, there's not a lot I can do about that.

I think any nastiness is being indirectly targetted at stupid BBC management rather than Evans himself. However, like Helen, I can't stand his annoying voice either.

I guess Chris can't help having an annoying voice. Laughing
I still don't think the decision is that bad, many people on the TOGs forum are prepared to give Chris a chance.
They will soon be COGs I suppose. Very Happy

I'm sorry Toggy but it's the worst decision that could have been made in my book anyway. I won't be listening, as I don't to Drivetime unless someone else is on and I usually only remember he's off by Thursday in the week. That time is just not a radio listening time anymore. Mornings will be the same when Terry goes.

If it was the only radio show on the earth I'd still not listen to it and I usually stick by my decisions.

Completely agree Helen. As I said earlier, an awful lot of us will be cast out from Radio2 because we cannot stand the new incumbent.

I was chatting with someone from Radio 2 a wee while ago, I told him about this place. “Very negative places those Internet forums”, he said, of course, I defended R2OK, saying no no no, this one is different but I’m not so sure that it is. It seems the chap from Radio 2 was right. This has become such a negative place, with just about everything being a bad decision, a poor stand-in, the same old music, a dirge, or something not worth listening to. Well, I like Radio 2, and not just little bits of it, most of it actually.
Chris Evans moving to breakfast may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I think it’s a really bold decision, and one that will see Radio 2 staying on top for a long time to come. The other changes in the pipeline will compliment Chris’ breakfast show making sure that Radio 2 flows seamlessly 24/7. Trust me , you'll be glued to Radio 2 morning 'til bedtime.

Sorry Rachel, I completely disagree. The whole issue at stake is what kind of station Radio 2 is or should be. Radio1.5 it SHOULD NOT be, but that's what it is becoming. You can't tell me that Evans will bring anything other than a zoo format , or that records like the glorious "Stardust" are likely to be played. They won't.

Normally, I respect your opinion, but in this case, you're wrong Crying or Very sad

How can my opinion be wrong? You may disagree with it, but that doesn't make it wrong. Smile

It's not gonna be a Breakfast Show like the old days, MiS... there'll be no madness and mayhem or 4DJ song, it'll be completely different to anything you've heard before, and the music will be right up your street.

Have you thought why these forums may seemingly be so negative? Maybe it's because those that run Radio 2 & 6 music seem to be making more -shall we say-questionable decisions than good ones these days. That's certainly my opinion. When they do something I like. I'll certainly mention it on here. I might even send them a personal message on the 'contact us' page of the Radio 2 site. If you like the way Radio 2 is going at present then that's fine. At least you're happy.

But, since Evans took over the Radio 2 drivetime slot, he has become, through personal maturing and strong production, unrecognisable from the shouty, arrogant figure who once teased a listener phoning in to his Radio 1 breakfast show about how little the man earned in comparison with a top DJ. Now Evans is notable for his sympathetic engagement with the audience and his current radio persona can be held up as a model of career rehab.

I agree with the above.
Chris used to be obnoxious. These days he appears a very pleasant fellow

Yes those inside Radio 2 cannot understand that anyone should not be happy with their choices for presenters. Maybe when the ratings drop they will understand the nation's anger at having Evans foisted upon them. They seem to forget the nation is ageing, although by putting someone as childish as Evans on instead of Terry you would never think it.

My twopenneth:

Even after yesterday's speculation, I was surprised and saddened by Terry's heartfelt and poetic speech this morning. (In fact, it still touched me when I heard Chris replay it at 5). Now, I know I'm biased because I like Chris as a broadcaster BUT I think the question of whether this is a right or wrong decision has to come down to what is best for the station. I agree with Rachel - to keep a station fresh and exciting after losing a man like Wogan, it takes a bold move. As much as love them, Walker, Maconie, Lester, or Allinson would have felt like such an anti-climax. Ross or Radcliffe would have been a step too far.

The station will lose listeners anyway - it's bound to - building a listenership takes time. To plump for Chris challenges the listeners - a choice has to be made, and Chris inspires loyalty amongst those that enjoy and endure him. Good luck to Chris, and good luck to Radio 2 in the biggest change it has probably ever seen since it stopped being the Light Programme.

Also - considering this announcement was apparently due in two weeks - I think we now see why Evans' book is due out October 1st.

Maybe - just maybe - the person "from Radio 2" has his or her head conveniently buried in the sand. The difference between now and, say, 20 years ago is that these here internet forum thingeys give people an opportunity to voice their concerns and have them placed into the public domain with immediate effect. The fact that there's so much negative comment about Radio 2 indicates that a lot of people really aren't happy with the way things are being run - and the way their money is being used by people who probably couldn't run a sweetshop profitably out in the real world. If a person working for a public service broadcaster like the BBC can't stomach that, then hard luck.

All credit to Chris Evans with Drive time, but it will look from some like he's bought himself on the station to take over Breakfast. Christmas 2009 will be sad history for Radio 2 Breakfast and the listeners.
