Mark, it will not happen! He couldn't get out of bed when he was at Radio 1, he couldn't get out of bed when at Virgin and he would never get out of bed to start at that silly hour either.

And the answer, I now realise, is 42 not 43.

Here we go again, the anti-Chris Evans posts from the usual suspects Rolling Eyes

I am sad to see Terry go from the Breakfast Show as I really enjoy the programme (accept when JW sits in and the annoying Deadlioke gets dragged out). An iconic broadcaster and it will indeed be a sad day when he hangs up his breakfast mike

We have, however, been here before (although I am too young to remember it as Radio 2 was for old fuddy duddies back in those days Wink ) and Radio 2 survived and developed into Britain's no 1 station that we have today

I will miss Chris immeasurably on Drive Time as I think it's a great show and I hope he takes some of the format with him as it works very well. I'm not overly keen on all of it (the Kids at 5:15 in particular) but whatever people say about Chris - the programme is as popular today as it was under darling Johnny.

This is a massive gamble for Chris but he restored the Radio One breakfast show when he took over and I am sure he will maintain an audience on a par with Terry's

As for the nonsense that Terry has been pushed out by the Management, please state your source for this or leave the Conspiracy Theories to others.

Will Foxy and Johnny go with him I wonder, I'm sure he'll have a Sports slot so Johnny probably will but not sure about Foxy - I guess Sally will be replaced by Lynne Bowles (I like her so not bothered either way)

The end of an era, the King is Dead - Long live the King

Given the fact that Chris was in his 20s then and was out on the lash pretty much every night and is now a 40 year old with a wife and a young child I'd say you are wrong and being rather arsey too

How long will he manage to get out of bed for a 7:30am start, including Fridays (that day he didn't want to work on)?

I was going to give it a week but that would be unreallistic even for Evans. So I'll opt for two instead! Smile

Why do people think Chris is still the person he was 10 years ago, he has matured considerably since then. I was listening to drive today and he sounded really thrilled to be given the breakfast slot, I think he will do well there.

You could have fooled me (and lots of others)!

Not surprising really, eh? I guess he can't wait to see Terry's audience dwindle away too.

I don't think it will dwindle, again I will say on the TOGs forum most people are prepared to give Chris a chance rather than hang draw and quarter him before he's even started.

He is not the person he was 10 years ago, he has a wife and child now and does not spend his evenings on the lash.

He hasn't yet undergone a voice transplant or curtailed his obsession with hearing his own voice over all else. I can't see either of those changing in a hurry so he's still a non-starter as far as many people are concerned.

I'm not so sure. Chris does have a huge fan base; they don't make themselves known here very often, but they do exist.

I think Terry's "decision" was assisted by Radio 2 management. They've wanted Evans in the Breakfast chair for a long time so I've no doubt that they've negotiated a best time for Terry to announce that he's stepping down.

Well... the current Radio 2 logo (introduced in 2007) is... ginger!! Wink

(Seriously though, I think Wogan meant it when he said it was his own decision).

Thats what worries me as well... they have just had a weekend reshuffle!
Confused Surely, they're not going to remove one of Radio 2's "new" weekend additions? If you assume they're not going to interfere with the most recent additions to the weekend schedule, that leaves them with the choice of removing/changing either:
- Mark Lamarr
- Sounds of the '60s (most popular Saturday show)
- Jonathan Ross
- Pick of the Pops
- Dermot O' Leary
- Paul Gambaccini
- Bob Harris
- GMS
- Sunday Love Songs
- Michael Ball
- EP
- Sunday evening
Now... a big list? But how many of these can Radio 2 really interfere with? I can't see Ross leaving; SOTs is the most popular show on Saturday and I can't see Dermot stepping down either... the others are really specialist shows, some a requirement.

But who knows!!! Anything can happen.

Its high time Radio 2 listeners started to make their feelings known to Radio 2 but then again would they listen, no they wouldnt. I once heard a regular radio 2 dj say that the radio 2 bosses dont listen to their customer/listeners

Its slightly ironic that when Radio 2 don't listen to their listeners, the listeners stop listening!

It seems the chap from Radio 2 was right. This has become such a negative place, with just about everything being a bad decision, a poor stand-in, the same old music, a dirge, or something not worth listening to. Well, I like Radio 2, and not just little bits of it, most of it actually.
Chris Evans moving to breakfast may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I think it’s a really bold decision, and one that will see Radio 2 staying on top for a long time to come. The other changes in the pipeline will compliment Chris’ breakfast show making sure that Radio 2 flows seamlessly 24/7. Trust me , you'll be glued to Radio 2 morning 'til bedtime.

I have to agree there Helen!

btw has anyone noticed that when Evans started at Radio 2, he was younger then when Wogan started???

Chris unfortunatley is one of the few presenters (the others being the likes of Alan Carr Rolling Eyes) who isn't my cup of tea. Most of Radio 2 still appeals to me, including some of the specialist Sunday evening programmes.

Really?? Well I am not 40 yet and I for one will not be listening to the new breakfast show and if Radio 2 set about selecting presenters of the Evans calibre then I will be leaving the station for good as no doubt will many many other listeners. As for being glued to the station, I wouldnt be glued to a Chris Evans show even if you stuck my ear with bostick to the radio I assure you.

Did you really expect the red carpet to be rolled out for him by anyone other than Radio 2 management? Don't you remember the reaction when he was parachuted in to Johnnie Walker's previous midweek spot? I think that was genuine public horror and annoyance, not just a few angry message boarders. As for me, as I've said on the R2 boards, It's not a personal dislike of Chris Evans. I've never met him, therefore I don't know him beyond his TV/Radio persona. For all I know he might even go to church on Sundays - Bless him! Who knows, If our paths should ever cross, I might even find him likeable! No, it's nothing personal, just that I don't want him on my radio station of choice. By the way, I only ever post using this handle, in case it's crossed your mind that I also use other names on this and the R2 boards.

I completely agree with this, the problem is where to go next? I think it will have to be R4. at least there I will keep up with what is happening in the world!

The lack of a real alternative to R2 at Breakfast is a good indication of the extent to which radio broadcasting is a complete stitch-up here in the UK. The fact that all BBC local radio stations all sound the same, with presenters trying too hard to do too much and commercial radio now owned by two major conglomerates and local radio (think of "Heart", heaven help us!) is just a local face on a nationally-served brand. Programming is played out from a server and local voices have very tight slots into which to insert their inane speech.

So what are the alternatives? There isn't an alternative to Radio 2 simply because it is, or was, unique. The appointment to the insufferable Evans to breakfast clearly indicates that the BBC is pitching up R2 against other major stations in a competitive market - but R2 isn't supposed to compete on the same basis as the commercial stations. It has an entirely different remit and is required to be "different".

However, with a decision that has been taken by people who really should know better, R2 lurches even closer to a head-on competitive commercial radio format and that's not good for anybody.

It's no real surprise to see so many pirate radio stations coming on-air thrse days - and who came blame them?

Maybe the BBC will leave us 5 years worth of listen again so we have something decent to listen to when Evans takes over breakfast!

I agree. Chris has really matured. I was a bit dubious when Chris was first given the Saturday show on Radio 2 but decided to listen to give him a change. I was very pleasantly surprised by what i heard.

From what I've heard I don't think he's matured at all. I don't hear a style that's any different from his "zoo" breakfast shows on Virgin (which, I will admit, I used to listen to regularly).

One only has to hear a couple of his intensely-annoying daytime trails to realise that his style is still immature - and patronising to anybody with a modicum of intelligence.

If he's to be broadly accepted in the Breakfast slot he's going to have to change a huge amount - and I can't see that happening at all. (He'll still possess that annoying voice, too, and that's good enough reason to avoid him completely).

I must admit to finding it niggling that Chris was sacked by the BBC for serious breach of contract and yet here he is again and doing very nicely.. surely the Beeb, like most other employers, should have stuck to their guns and closed the door?
There must be other existing or up coming talented people to present these shows?
( I also find it annoying that the BBC has decided to bring back the original Sam Mitchell to Eastenders!! wasn't she a serious drug user? )

before I get slammed, I know JW has had his moments but there's always an exception to the rule where serious talent is concerned Laughing

For me this will only become an issue when I'm on holiday from work, but indeed where to move to. There's only so much political debate that I could stand. Isn't that what Radio 4's Today programme is mostly filled with at that time. Do please correct me if I'm doing Radio 4 a dis-service there. I suppose I could have a gander at BBC7's website and see what's on there at that time of day. To answer Minx's 6 music question, it's Shaun Keaveny who's on when Terry is on R2, though his hours are 7:00-10:00am. He has been on radio 2, filling in for Dermot O'Leary on a Saturday. I can't think of any other R2 show he's done. Sorry I've no idea what his 6 music show sounds like. However 6 music is quite good in the afternoons with Cerys Matthews on from 1:00-4:00pm and Steve Lamacq from 4:00-7:00pm.

Evans was sacked twice by two different radio stations for much the same offence. If I had been sacked by a firm for a sackable misdemeanor, I wonder what the chances were that that firm would re-employ me again 10 years later, however much I pleaded to them that I had changed my ways and wouldn't let them down again.

Well, that is true. The rules for us mere mortals are different! Very Happy

Chris was sacked for his behaviour back then. He has changed considerably in the intervening years.
On the other hand i don't recall JW ever changing his cocain habbits

Clive55 are you suggesting JW still takes cocain now then? Suggest you read his book.

First post, so be gentle.

The thng I find odd is that that the Mail on Sunday breaks this story (very accurately) before STW has the opportunity and the next week they are serialising the forthcoming Chris Evans autobiog.

I expect the circulation figures for the MoS were maybe higher than would be the case if the story had not broken for another couple of weeks.

I suppose we can expect this sort of relaxed behaviour from guests on the new breakfast show Rolling Eyes
