Bruce Forsyth speaks on Newsnight how stars have being overpaid for years. It's to put Bums on seats.

Should the BBC cut back?
Should BBC radio stations and TV channels be trimmed back?
Should strictly come dancing up against the X Factor agressive scheduling by the BBC?l
Should the director general be paid more than Prime Minster. |

Brucie is right. No change there - it was the same 50 years ago, as soon as ITV started in competition with the BBC. Although one or other has at various times pleaded poverty, they have both been guilty of poaching talent and overpaying for it.
There is still competition for the names which will put "bums on seats", it's just that none of the broadcasters can afford to pay quite so much at the moment, so everyone, be it Forsyth, Moyles, Laycock or Robinson, is having to accept less or lump it. _________________ Ron |

I don't see why not. There always were programmes that clashed and that was before VCRs/SKY+ etc. What's the problem? Record one and watch t'other! Sunday nights used to be the same as well.
It's all hype and extremely boring...................

It's just not an issue - as H says, record one or how about this suggestion: get a life and watch neither They are tv shows, that's all. X Factor is also a freak show, and the participants in Strictly are all consumed with totally inappropriate ideas of what's important. _________________ MiS |

That's exactly what I do, apart from maybe the final of one or both depending who is in them!

If there was real 'competition' then Eastenders and Coronation Street should be on at the same time. |

I'm looking forward to Strictly Come Dancing, I think it's (usually) a great show and very entertaining although I might think differently if it wasn't hosted by Bruce Forsythe... I think he's a fantastic entertainer and I just enjoy watching him.
I do think the last series was possibly the best it could get though..
I'm surprised there aren't more SCD fans on the board..
Yes, I think the BBC should cut back and reduce the number of radio and TV stations.. Radio 1 extra?? what the heck for?
Yes, I think the BBC pays waaaay too much for it's presenters and so called TV celebrities.
and, No, the Director General should not be paid more that the Prime Minister... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

The problem is that it's a free market for talent. There are loads and loads of TV and radio networks out there now who need "faces" to attract audiences, so if the Beeb doesn't win the bidding then another network - backed by lots of cash - will.
The only reason the Beeb can get away with driving fees down at the moment is that the commercial TV networks are losing money hand over fist due to the ad agencies' shifting their clients' budgets over to newer media outlets - such web and mobile-based viral marketing campaigns.
If ever the commercial TV market picks up (and, in its current form, I doubt if it will because it's "old media"), then the bidding war will once again occur. It's a simple case of supply and demand. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |
