You know they won't dip, but I can see some of Radio 1 listeners coming over to R2 and in the process giving a false impression that Chris has lost none of Wogan's listeners.

I think the big comparison will be how many listeners Radio 1 lose from Breakfast.

Just what I said earlier, H, they'll be screaming the audience figures because they don't care that millions of Wogan's audience will have deserted with nowhere comparable to go. Today or Classic FM are hardly replacing like with like. I'm still waiting for a suggestion as to which Radio station I can tune to to avoid being shouted at.

And bad news for people who don't really want to treated like unthinking idiots! ("It's gravy baby!" just about sums it up, eh? Smile )

BTW: What a well-timed sign-up to the board, and such a unique profile as well! LOL

Substitute "Terrible" for "great" and we have the truth.

Careful. You are insulting the 5 million (plus) people who listen to and enjoy Drivetime now, just as the vast majority did when JW held office.

Your baying like hyenas and prejudgment of what may or may not happen when the tenure of the Breakfast Show changes hands also insults its present 8 million listeners who are quite capable and intelligent enough to make up their own minds.

I like Terry's humour and wit but, in all honesty, listening to him this week, it is clear that the timing of his going is right. Very little happens during his two hours at the office, save for the wheezing of his chest and the rumble of his voice and stomach, the running jokes about Welsh place names and Wealdstone High Street, the insufferable Chuffer Dandridge and his small, incestuous family of correspondents, and an occasional Janet and John, which was funny once but now has all the subtlety and predictability of the 139th rerun of Carry On Camping.

It is time for a change, just as we hankered for a change from 25 years of the Light Programme when the pirates scrambled ashore back in 1967. I can't remember who Tony Blackburn replaced then but my parents were none too happy about it and thought that standards had been shot to pieces.

Chris Evans' Breakfast will be different, no doubt about it. Things will happen during the show - I'm sure there will be more third party input, as there is on Drivetime, and that should be interesting. Sure, he will talk over the start and end of records, but he will at least know a bit about everything he plays (I enjoyed the reference of Michael Bublé's new release to half a dozen other songs on Tuesday - it sent the computer tracklisting log berserk!).

It would have been nice to have had Johnnie Walker permanently in the slot, years ago, ditto, if he had a bit more personality, Richard Allinson, but realistically their time has passed (I should know, I'm of similar age). There is no one around the commercial radio stations who stands out as anywhere nearly as good as even those two; not everyone is convinced at the moment, but I think CE is the Right Man For The Job. He has mellowed since the dog days of his stint on Radio 1 (he did make a success of that, remember, it was only his bachelor lifestyle which brought him down) and he recognises that he has a big responsibility to keep Radio 2 and its Wake-Up show where it belongs - at the top. He may lose some of the more stubborn TOGs (their forum is actually surprisingly relaxed about the change) but I'm sure he'll also gain some from Radio 1, where its equivalent of Wogan, the Moyles, is himself fast-approaching his sell-by date.

I know of another Wogan fan who is looking forward to Chris taking over...

I am looking forward to hearing how his new programme sounds and am not prejudging it like many people on internet message boards.

Chris must have developed a rhino hide by now. I know it would get me down if I was in his shoes. Looking at some of the posts describing him for example in one instance as "scum", I wonder what goes through someone's mind as they sit at their keyboard berserkly tapping out this poison. He is a DJ and TV presenter, not a paedophile for goodness sake!

Of course it wasn't "scum" that he was called here - it was "a***hole" wasn't it?

Never mind. If people are happy with such nonsense at breakfast then good luck to them.

One has to wonder..... It's the Insufferable Evans who comes across as the hyena, to be honest, and that's what so many dislike about him and his intolerable style of broadcasting. If people are happy with a hyena in their ears at breakfast then they get what they deserve.

And what a choice - Moyles on R1 and Evans on R2. Whoopie, folks.

It's not Terry's departure that's the issue. In fact, it's irrelevant in the context.

Blackburn didn't replace anybody - he was R1's first breakfast DJ, having come over from Radio London. He was replaced by Noel Edmonds.

You know fine what I mean. National popular radio was unchanged from the end of the Second World War. The change which the offshore DJs brought, first offshore and then on, when the Light was split, was viewed by our elders with the same horror that some of us now view a seemingly radical change to the breakfast show.

When we talked about moving Chris to Breakfast following Wogan’s move to the Weekend, we spent quite some time on “what will the message-boarders think?” and to be a little cocky about it, we got it spot on. We’d have been hugely disappointed if the news had passed without at least some negative reaction, so in a sense, it comes as a relief and a fillip at the same time, because it is that negative reaction that feeds our desire and drives us to put out the best mass-appeal show that we can, and we will. It’s recognised that it is a massive challenge, even for Chris Evans, just to hold onto Terry’s audience whilst at the same time we want to draw in new listeners, we can’t promise to keep everyone happy but that is our objective.

Thank you. My summation of the bloke might be harsh but it's not as harsh as some comments I've read and heard from other quarters. It echoes the strength of feeling that exists about the way BBC management is making decisions against the wishes of a great number of people - including me. I have every right to offer up my opinion of the person in the manner to which you refer and I do willingly for that it how I feel about the bloke. And I'm not the only one!

What - you mean we might just be subjected to the Evans of old? But isn't everyone saying he's a changed man?

Not all of them. My parents and the parents of a lot of the kids in our village loved pirate radio. Some of them got up petitions in the hope of saving Radio(s) Caroline and London. I just wish we could have radio of the same quality now, as we had then. Crying or Very sad

Memory plays funny tricks. We like to think that it was quality radio. In fact, if you hear some of the old tapes, such few as are available, and the adverts/jingles (even, or especially, Kenny Everett's) it was pretty ropey. Only some of the records played were half-way decent.

Well it was quality to us! I would rather be listening to that now than most of the new presenters on radio stations these days. I do have lots of recordings made over the years and they will be coming out more in the future by the sound of things.

I'm only glad you run a radio station and not a car factory. Using your logic, you would scrap a deservedly popular and reliable model and replace it with something that cost twice as much, had unproven reliability issues and bombed at the Motor Show.

Your management team weren't by any chance employed by Saab were they? Wink

I was thinking that. It's a bit like Tesco one one of its most popular and profitable lines simply because it was "time for a change".

Things aren't always how they appear GG. The popular model has been around for so long it's now a classic, the springs are shot, the engine is tired, the gearbox a little crunchy and it doesn't run on unleaded fuel, so we've had it semi-restored and now it's priceless, so we only dare take it out at the weekend, and even then, only for a few miles at a time- perhaps to a classic show.
The new model isn't really that new actually, it's been around a long time and has many laps under its vast "fan"-belt - I'm quite looking forward to seeing what it can do flat in 3rd around Ascari with no Gurney-Flaps.

That's probably why it's really, really noisy, with an irritating rattle and a habit of sliding out of control with great regularity. Wink

The exhaust we can fix or replace , in fact, I can let you know that we're thinking about getting one of those after market power pipes for more of a throaty roar. The tricky handling though is inherent in the design-there's nothing we can do about that- it makes for a really exciting drive though- so make sure that you're well strapped in.

It depends how the show is run. If you notice Moyles plays less music and chats a lot. Will the music be let down on Breakfast to get the BIG things I guess planned to make R2 breakfast enjoyably to listen too? Is there going to be promises at the beginning of 2010 that he won't let the Wogan followers down? We have to wait and see.

You are absolutely right Toggy. It won't change. The sun & moon will still rise & set; the wind will still blow, but I certainly don't think the world is going to be a better place. As I've previously said, most of the time it won't affect me as I'm on an early shift, so I won't be woken up 'with a start' next January. Instead it'll still be the much more civilised tones of Alex Lester!

Quite correct it won't make the world a better place but neither will Terry staying, a bit of tolerance and respect for individuals and other people's views would though. That is another discussion altogether I guess and one which I can't be doing with thinking about too much at present.

Yes Terry isn't staying whether he got 10,000 pleading for him to change his mind emails or letters. He's still around, but at weekends. We will have to let the next man Chris Evans give it a shot. Remembering when he was appointed for Drivetime people moaned there heads off, "he's not going to stay, or "the show isn't going to work, then 5 Million plus listeners later he's moving to Breakfast and still around. Must be doing something right..

Actually, I am a bit sorry that Chris is moving to breakfast. I will miss his Drivetime show. I tend to hear more of that.
But i'm sure the show will be good if Chris continues in the current direction.
I hope he won't go with the trend of breakfat DJ's to be LOUD. I hope he'll continue in his calming down direction

We do indeed. So why speculate?

That isn't the real issue, though.

You mean he might get a new voice?

That's probably why it's really, really noisy, with an irritating rattle and a habit of sliding out of control with great regularity. Wink

The exhaust we can fix or replace , in fact, I can let you know that we're thinking about getting one of those after market power pipes for more of a throaty roar. The tricky handling though is inherent in the design-there's nothing we can do about that- it makes for a really exciting drive though- so make sure that you're well strapped in.

A decent muffler, or better still a speed limiter, would sort the noise issues.

Whilstr sharp-handling performance cars may be fun on the track, they tend to be of limited use to a more mature clientele; witness Honda with the V-Tec engine and other gee-gaws. With cars, the gadgets simply don't get used; with radio, the clientele will search for a model which better satisfies their requirements.

I would respectfully suggest that the "bright young things" who have decided what us more mature and discerning listeners should have forced through our ears, should go down to Tescos and invest heavily in Alphabetti Spaghetti; it will make it easier for you to eat you words.

I find your smug self-assurance rather annoying, as I always have when I listen to you on Drivetime..

According to an article in the Mirror Chris Moyles said " Evans will lose listeners". "People may tune in for a while and get sick of him, then tune to Radio One and listen to a different type of music". He also said "Wogan used to chatter on and we do the same on the Radio 1 breakfast show". People said this when he took over Drivetime and proved everyone wrong.
