The Guardian are reporting Radcliffe as a possible replacement for Mayo on 5Live as they seem to be taking for granted that Mayo is coming to Drivetime on 2.

I do hope they're wrong on both counts to be honest and I also hope Stuart Maconie doesn't drop off the schedules. To lose Wogan and Radcliffe 'n' Maconie in one fell swoop would be irksome.

To put it mildly!
If (god forbid) such a worst case scenario did happen, I really would despair of the powers-that-be at Radio 2. And even ask (to quote from the Dusty/Pet Shop Boys hit) 'What have I done to deserve this'? Mark Radcliffe is one of the few Lesley Douglas signings that I can agree with.
I still question why Radio 2 scrapped Stuart's solo saturday show and even more his original Critical List album track show. At least bring that one back.

The Guardian's story appears to be partly based on a throwaway bit of speculation in Martin Kelner's piece:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/sep/14/terry-wogan-hairy-conrflake

which seems to think Radcliffe going to 5Live will mean more specialist shows on Radio 2 (to offset the Evans outcry).

It would be a loss, as he likes his music. One advantage the station is move to Manchester and he lives there. I enjoyed Mark in for Steve Wright, but that sadly was stopped when the new controller to over. Looks like Stuart will take over the evening show on his own. Mark Radcliffe has no luck with double pairings with the split from Marc Riley in 2004.

Also sadly I must say a lot of things have been lost under the new controllers leadership at Radio 2. We are losing those presenters who know there music, or moved to the early hours.

Partnerships tend to have a shelf life. Mark and Lard worked together for 11 years on national radio - that's hardly a failure.

A helluva lot was also lost under Lesley Douglas' stewardship before the present incumbant. Yes it's sad that he's now continuing her gradual destruction of the station, though, and to give credit where it's due, he did bring back Richard Allinson, And Lynn Parsons can also be heard again in a deputising role.

Personnally I got fed up of Maconie/Radcliffe prattle and haven't listened in ages.

I'd be happy to see the back of their evening show. Radcliffe exit, Maconie back on the Critical Albums, and specialist shows moved earlier in the evening, and new ones on after.

Gillian Reynolds in the Telegraph:-

Mark Radcliffe, it is rumoured, will move from Radio 2 to replace Mayo on 5 Live. Radcliffe already lives happily in the North West. He refused to move South even when he did the Radio 1 breakfast show. Yet if he’s going to develop as a live speech broadcaster, beyond being a music specialist who does the occasional scripted documentary for Radio 4, he’ll have to ration his “ermmms” and boost his listening ability.

He's no Simon Mayo, that's for sure

I'd rather listen to a hundred hours of MR erm-ing than 60 seconds of the intolerably nonsensical Chris Evans, Sarah Kennedy or Steve Wright.
Can't see me listening to R2 after the New Year at all... I think the management should be ashamed at the way they've destroyed the station.

You and me both PJ as regards Chris Evans and Steve Wright. I think the New Year will be interesting as regards the listening figures. If I am to continue listening to Radio 2 then Suzi Q and Mark Lamarr should be back to peak time spots and a new Country show would be good for those who think Bob Harris' version of the music is too Americana based.

Just a note - Mark and Stuart are discussing, with great frequency, where their next walk will be next summer. Mark also just said, upon invitation to some gig on St. Patrick's Night, that he couldn't attend as he'd be doing the show with Stuart that night 'as usual' - so I guess he's not moving? I hope he's not anyway.

The speculation has been that Mark will move to 5Live when that station goes to Salford in 2011, with an interim presenter filling the afternoon slot until then.
