Well I'll be glad to see the back of him, it's just a shame he is still going to be on the station.

Hurry up inventors and make that radio with the voice recognition mute pre set !

As I've said many times before, it's not so much his content but the fact that the pitch of his voice irritates the hell out of me so I turn him off as fast as I can.

I've occasionally heard him for 5 mins in the car and I'm sorry but I'd rather have silence, hence the wish to be even able to get rid of his trails. I can't see that he has improved though, he still shouts.

I said 3+ years ago I wouldn't listen to him and I haven't.

One good thing is at least I'll be able to listen to Drivetime once more. Smile

I'll agree with you about Alan Carr, he's terrible.

When CE hosted the Abba tribute concert he shouted right the way through that. Furthermore, even when engaging in dialogue with someone else on the stage, he shouted at the other person, whilst the other person responded by speaking normally.

But you're right both of you, Alan Carr has by far the most irritating voice on radio. And the fact that he's been paired up with a woman with one of the most modulated voices on R2 seems to underline its dreadfulness even further.

Me too, Clive Smile. Drivetime with Chris is unique – there’s nothing like it anywhere else. Chris’ Breakfast Show, I’m certain, will be different, and in the words of Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, “ different is good”, but I’m really going to miss Drivetime as it is now. It’s not the same – even with the same format when someone fills in. My parallel processors privately think that it’s a mistake to move Chris to Breakfast- not a mistake for the Breakfast Show cos it needs Chris, but a mistake for the Drivetime Show. It seems the natural way to go but you should never give up something brilliant in the hope of something better, that’s not to say Chris Breakfast Show won’t be fab, it will be, but Drivetime as we know it, is doomed without him. Perhaps he could do both? Click whir….a light has just come on!

Shocked The light's a Network Controller download to cure that problem with the parallel processors and name memory bank. Can't have anything out of line, expressing doubts,, can he? Laughing

Have faith, little one - it's certainly a big leap.

At the risk of repeating, if you're going to change something that's been there since Pontius was a Pilate you might as well be radical. Half measures usually fail and, although my natural preference to replace TW would have been Simon Mayo, it would have been like repainting the golden yellow walls with magnolia; after 18 months you'd have to go out and find something more vibrant (Zoe Ball?).

Over on Drivetime we already have a room of flashing lights and snazzy wallpaper; try covering that with magnolia. Trouble is, all the likely "in-house" candidates, Mayo, Allinson, Maconie, Radcliffe, are just that - extremely competant presenters who will do the job very well, but they lack the sparkle which has lit the place for the last three years. This may be a reflection on the state and standard of popular music radio as a whole - where's the cream of the "next generation" of DJs who should be jostling for the position? From what I can tell the gold top has been removed from the shelf and it's all homogenised and standardised, but on balance I'd rather have it then and the lively, creamy stuff in the morning with my cornflakes.

("Who writes this stuff?"
"Don't worry, no-one will take a blind bit of notice!")

I noticed, Ron!

The only problem with lively wallpaper and flashing lights with sparkle is that it's so easy to cross the line into tastelessness. For example, remember Chris Evans telling the world that Foxy was pregnant when she clearly didn't want the world to know?

But I also agree that you need someone who can make Breakfast into their own show and stamp their personality onto it. It's just a shame that there isn't more to choose from.

Oh, and why so many bland presenters? It's because of commercial radio. Anything too unusual and the advertisers complain that they don't want to be associated with it. You get the same thing with drivers in Formula One. It was the advertisers who got Timmy Mallet the sack from Centre Radio in Leicester in the early '80s, so this is nothing new!

Smile Download complete... Smile I do though, in common with other C7000 prototype management droids, have a self doubt sub-routine which is spawned whenever something important happens. Wink Why can't we make everyone happy all the time?

Perhaps the HAL 9000 should be used for the switchover? We could have Chris Evans reciting 'On a bicycle made for two' as the station goes into reverse thrust and leaves the TOGs stranded in cyberspace.

'What is happening Terry? I feel like my circuits are failing........'
'These are the talking rings? They speak? Of what?.................'
'Welcome to Altair (Radio) Four Gentlemen...............................'
'The crazy fools! What have they done?...................................'

Extra points for anyone naming the SF films suggested above!

I was also delighted last night Chris [played quite a bit of country, which i favour.
I tend to listen to most of the show these days on my journey home & when i get home I continue listening on & off.
In the mornings I listen to a bit of Breaky before I leave the house, a bit on my way into work & at work we have MAGIC on. I don't want to upset the equilibrium by changing to radio 2.
At one time we had changing stations & ended up with KISS on in the office for parts of the day. So we'll stick to Magic at work!

Hello mighty I-con! I was thinking of these films at the time:

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (David Bowman puts Hal 9000 into reverse)
2. The Time Machine ( HG Wells sees the evidence of everlasting future wars)
3. Forbidden Planet (Robby the Robot welcomes the space visitors)
4. Planet of the Apes (Taylor discovers the extreme folly of the human race)

Forbidden Planet.. excellent movie and "proper" science fiction for my taste Razz in fact I'm going to dig it out to watch over the weekend.
I would have got three right but not "The Time Machine"... Sad

Hi Santa. Yes 'FP' is based on 'The Tempest' by William Shakespeare and he based his story on the discovery of Bermuda in 1609. I've been to Bermuda lots of times as my daughter used to work there. Bermuda is twinned with.... Lyme Regis! Admiral Sir George Somers who discovered the islands came from there originally.

Thanks Briant, I'm pretty amazed to learn of the link between the movie and Shakespeare!! I had no idea!
I'll impress Mrs SFF later.. Laughing
I just love this era of Sci Fi films and comics, much more than today's blockbusters which seem so miss-able after one viewing..
I'm shortly hoping to hang some classic 50s Sci Fi posters on my Den walls - including the Forbidden Planet poster with Robby the robot carrying Anne Francis.. Razz
