Terry Wogan announced that he will be taking a weekend show which will be in front of a live audience. I just wonder where the show will be in the weekend schedules?

Hasn't this question been asked already? And didn't we decide that we'd know when the BBC Press Office made some kind of announcement?

Colby,

In his posting Mark is wondering, so he's inviting suggestions/guesses before the Press Office announces. It's like a game, a bit of fun, something completely absent from your postings!

I think Terry may replace Paul O'Grady in the weekend schedule.

'Just a hunch, Frank. Sometimes a hunch pays off, sometimes it doesn't.' Cool

I hope he doesn't... I'm getting to like O'Grady now - and the music he plays. Sad

I was assuming he would be in his Christmas Day slot of 9.00 to 11.00 but the live audience angle suggests 11.00 to 1.00. I'd be surprised if its anything later as that would be out of peak time on a Sunday. Can't see this show being on a Saturday.

Without knowing the circumstances (ie contracts with other weekend presenters), its hard to know! I doubt it would be an overnight one Wink so Richard Allinson is safe!

Obviously the specialist shows would remain - SOT60s, SOT70s, POTP etc. (hopefully this is obvious to the BBC Laughing

I wonder if a Wogan show would work Sunday 9-11? (In place of Sunday Love Songs); I'm not saying that because I want to start rumours - I'm saying it because it stands out to me as a programme which hasn't seen any major changes in years, and if it was to be replaced by Wogan, Steve still has his afternoon show.

Live In front of an audience would indicate later in the day. I couldn't see Sunday Love Songs being ditched, nethier could I see Michael Ball being removed, although he's doing some long tours now. Maybe move Alan Titchmarsh show forward, or to a weekday evening slot?

I can see it being a Sunday.

Michael Ball and Sounds of the 70's I really hope remain unaffected.

Sunday Love Songs I can’t see changing. I would guess Elaine Paige moved to a weekday evening shift and Wogan presenting the 1-3 shift.

"And in the new year, I'll be starting a really exciting new show, live from the BBC Radio Studio at Broadcasting House in front of you, as my live audience, presenting the very pinnacle of live music, artists, guests, and of course, you, your mail, your warmth, your wit…

As I understood things, BH is all but closed on a Sunday, with nothing other than news/travel being broadcast live from there, so I still think Saturday is the more likely.

I think the majority of Elaine's listeners are either theatre fans, or actively involved at amateur and professional level. So moving the show to weeknights wouldn't be very popular - most listeners would be out!

Couldn't elaine Paige's show be moved to the slot that gardener presents on a sunday evening? I think that would work well- right after Mr O Grady.
Maybe Wogan could preceed O grady & Walker be moved to the 1PM slot

I heard Wogan will start his new weekend live show in Feb 2010. Looks like that will be the best time too let Chris Evans settle into Breakfast. It would be slightly silly starting Wogans new show at the same week as Evans.

Why? It's not like they would clash in the schedule is it? More likely Captain Wogan will be on holibags til then.

Wogan may well take a holday. We know he knows how to take holidays! But a new show on Radio 2 requires quite a bit of preparation work, deciding the format, doing research, booking acts and so on. While much of this will be done by a producer, Wogan will be involved. I would imagine that Sir Tel will take the Christmas period off with nary a thought for Radio 2, then return to the office periodically in January to get involved in planning for February.

Chris Evans, on the other hand, can be expected to jump programmes a bit more quickly. After all, he's not retiring...

Rob.

OK I'll be the first to say it. What a pity. Unfortunately he isn't retiring in any possible way.

The obvious place for Terry's new show would be 10 til 12 noon on Saturday - the old Saturday Club slot. The present incumbent is pre-recorded so he can be fitted in somewhere else - he's been on borrowed time since last October, anyway - when does his contract run out?

I can't see Wossy giving up Radio 2 on a Saturday? Although I did read on Digital Spy a thread saying "who would replace Johnny Vaughan on the Capital Radio London breakfast if he left, someone replied Jonathan Ross. Laughing

Thinking about it, that does make sense now. I wouldn't have believed it before last October/November's incidents if someone had said to me "I think JR is leaving".

I actually quite enjoy his shows, but its only a matter of time before he says/does something else which needs a little more action than switching from live to pre-recorded programmes!

Although technically, he already has. Doesn't he record the show on a Friday?.

It is recorded on Thurday or Friday. Bob Shennan did say on Feedback that the show is recorded Live and not stop and started over and over again. The show isn't edited that much as well.

I wonder if Wogan will take Gambo's slot?

I wish he'd take Gambo's old slot, Helen. But maybe the R2 bosses reckon that few people are listening early Saturday evening - and that's why they've put the present dreadful incumbents on. Crying or Very sad

Actually after I wrote I thought maybe they could put Gambo back to his earlier slot and put Wogan on after him?

I think Wogan will be Sunday afternoons, although I've got nothing to back this up.

I reckon Love Songs is being axed, with Ball and Paige moving down the schedule (possibly with Elaine going back to 90minutes), then Wogan comes on with his live show. A bit like the old Desmond Carrington show.

Like I say, I've got nothing to base this on apart from knowing Ball and Paige have April-to-April contracts and Steve Wright has been quite subdued this week, as if the wind has been taken out of his sails.

I've heard Wogan say his new show starts February a couple of times Ian. I wonder if Alan Titchmarsh is finishing? I hope not but I think he started in January so that would fit in timing wise.

Sunday Love Songs isn't a show which is set out as a public purpose in the programme policy. I can't see the show been scrapped. If Wogan show was too be aired on a Sunday as a live show in front of an audience, it will be later in the day.

I don't think anyone is saying Wogan will get the Sunday Love Songs slot Mark, but others will move into it to make way for Wogan later in the day.

Thats if his show is aired on a Sunday. Either way the show I think will be later in the day.

My guess is, Wogan's weekend show will be on Saturday or maybe Sunday but for sure it will be one of those days. Either day it will be most welcome.

Not necessarily, your icon-ship! Some of us say the weekend starts 5pm Friday, so why not a "Start-the-weekend-with-Wogan" shpw?

Yes, that's what I meant. I do think the Titchmarsh show is another likely candidate to go, but I would guess that on Sunday the "prime time" is lunchtime rather than Evening when many of Wogan's listeners will be watching Lark Rise To Candleford or the like.

I think Wogan would fit neatly into the 6PM slot on Saturdays. He could happilly replace the squawking one with the odd voice currently making R2 unlistenable at that time.

Just listened to this from Simon Mayo's show on the day of Terry's annoucement:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8242855.stm

Gillian Reynolds seems to take for granted that Terry's moving to Sunday afternoons.

El Tel will definetly move to sometime on the Sunday schedules imho.

Hopefully any reshuffle will spell the end for the dire Steve Wright Sunday Love Songs Show.

I doubt it if it's a live show with a live audience.

Maybe it's not going to be a weekly show but a 'once in a while' one?

Terry seems to make a point of saying 'weekly' on this interview:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8272781.stm

Though... if he takes as many holidays as he does now... I do wonder if JW will continue to cover for him, I imagine he would be a good host of the show Wogan describes.
