Isn't it just a wee bit soon to assess what he has done for world peace? Is there a hidden agenda here?

I don't have any problem with Obama getting this, and he is giving the considerable prize money to charity, but it does seem a little soon in his Presidency. As one of the papers said, maybe they gave it to him for not being Bush!!

Apparently the nominations closed just 12 days after he took office.

Yeah, I struggle to see what he's done for peace so far, apart from a few meetings he's not done very much at all, on the other hand the award may be a pre-emptive strike against the most powerful man in the world. It's going to be really difficult for Obama to start a war now- unless of course it's a war in the name of peace- we seem to have quite a lot of those, they're very popular with World Leaders.

Yes, or to put it more kindly

This is one of those rare events when a person has been awarded a prize for what might be, rather than what has already been achieved.
But we see the award in a positive way - clearly its intention is to honour and recognise what it is hoped can be achieved with this new president.

(Dr Bates Gill, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute)

and

In a short time he has established a new tone, creating a willingness for dialogue and I think we all should support him to make peace in this world possible. There is a lot do but a window of opportunity has been opened.
(Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany)

So it's the world giving a huge sigh of relief that, for once, the USA has a President who is neither (yet) a figure of ridicule nor has such a confrontational mentality. Putting his fine words about withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan, and closing Guantanamo Bay, into practice is proving a more difficult and lengthy process than just being able to "do it" (indeed the Afghan problem is escalating), but at least he hasn't picked a fight with or waded in against anyone else.

Whether someone should be given an award for not being George W Bush is, of course, questionable.

I'm not George W Bush, so can I have something?
