There are rumors that these stars are appearing at this years Strictly Come Dancing

Geri Halliwell, Ben Shepherd, Zara Phillips, Richard Madeley, Chris Moyles, Sharon Osbourne, Paul O'Grady, Carol McGiffin and Kara Tointon.

There are a lot of BBC Radio stars.

Every now and then, I'm really impressed by talent.

Watching last week's Strictly Come Dancing, I was completely sold on listening to and watching Jamie Cullum's performance along with the professional dancers ( singing his latest release I believe.. )
I thought he was just great - and Brucie did too!
I know maybe most on here don't like SCD, which surprises me, as I genuinely think it's the perfect show and stands out a mile from the rest of the rubbish on TV now.
I'll have to get myself a Jamie Cullum CD.. he could go far! Razz

I like Jamie Cullum, but you do have to make a few allowances.

When he plays the piano "properly" he makes it look effortless and he has a lightness of touch that reminds me of Oscar Peterson. All too often, though, the showman in him takes over and he gives it some terrible abuse.

Determined not to be pigeon-holed as a purely jazz musician, each album has strayed more and more into other territories, and an early review of the new one, out next month, suggests that this continues

"The Cole Porter cover at the start won't surprise you, but the house track at the end just might. Cullum's fifth album does justice to his musical influences: from the Portishead-tinged If I Ruled The World to the wonky groove of We Run Things, it's bold, experimental and the best thing Cullum's done."

Thanks for that Ron, and for posting the link to the SCD performance! I've watched it several times over and still think it's great.. I like the way he stands up at one point Laughing

I've also looked at several YouTube links of his performances and I do think I would like to hear more of his stuff. ( This YouTube stuff is a killer for me as I have soooo much to be getting on with today! )
Mrs SF just came back from Tesco but they didn't have anything by him.. Sad

I don’t “get” Strictly at all… a bunch of people we don’t know, trying to do something they cannot do. What’s the point of it all? Would it not be better TV to have a load of professional dancers trying to do something they cannot do? A crash course in a foreign language, for example, with Brucie saying … and now ladies and gentlemen here’s Darcey Bussell , she going to conjugate a few irregular verbs in German. The only point is to provide Saturday evening television entertainment.

We British love a bit of BDSM (so I'm told) and this is the televisual equivalent -to see other people, especially our favourite tv personalities, sweat and make fools of themselves and be given a (tongue)lashing by school master/mistress figures, in front of a baying audience goaded into a frenzy by Uncle Fester, in the guise of an 81-year old variety entertainer and Miss Whiplash, a tall, 38-year old siren with a Lancashire accent.

I've seen the usual derogatory comment in the papers about "Z-list celebrities" (which is a bit rich coming from journalist hacks who try to muscle in on every lig going). It depends what else you watch as to how well-known they are - there are a lot of sports and soap stars, and Jo Wood, who was once married to a Rolling Stone.

There have been a few odd series of pros learning to do more mundane things. Can't bring many (or any) to mind at the moment, they were that good. Oh yes: David Gower and Rory McGrath were sent to India to learn how to be hotel butlers. They made a *****-up of organising a firework display and Gower was recognised by the hotel's clientele and ended up being waited on by them, such is the regard that the former England cricket captain is held there.

I absolutely love it.. I can't comment on knowing the "celebs" as I only just realised after Mrs SF pointed out that one of them was the OXO lady ( or was it Bisto... Confused

But I recognise most of them eventually.

I really do admire the participants in most cases as I truly feel they give it their all and most do a pretty good job of something they haven't done before.
Take me for example.. Laughing

I've never danced in my life but who knows, with some training even I could be officially useless.

But look at Ricky what's his name from Eastenders... I wouldn't have imagined him to be a dancer but he's doing great.

I think the whole show is excellent, the colourful set, live music, professional dance routines, guest singers, Bruce Forsythe, the thrill of competition ( last year was almost nail biting for me ) and of course the participants - mistakes and all.

As somebody mentioned on the radio recently, it's one of the only entertainment shows the whole family can enjoy together..

I've always avoided SCD, not really "getting it". But we've watched all our videos, and we don't have unlimited internet access at present so being at a loose end in the evenings, this is the first series we've watched. I've got to say I've been pleasantly surprised, and it's a real joy to watch some of the "naturals" like Ricky Whittle and the blonde girl from The Bill. Ricky Groves is hilarious, and some of the older women (Linda Bellingham and Jo Wood) are so game!

Contrasted with X Factor, (yes, we've been desperate enough to sneak a peek at that!) where the "panel" are more cringeworthy than some of the actual contestants .... it's no contest for me. Can't understand the continued appeal of X Factor. It just seems incredibly cruel.

I've nothing whatsoever against Alesha, she is indeed a lovely lady. But I can't fathom why they dropped Arlene Phillips. If it was an age thing then that is very wrong. The difference in experience between Arlene & Alesha has been mentioned elsewhere. I agree with those who say that Arlene is far more qualified to be a judge than Alesha. That's been my main objection. It was also said that Len Goodman is still on the judging panel and he must be at least the same age as Arlene, and no I'm not calling for his removal.

Len Goodman is head judge and is one of the links back to the original Come Dancing; they probably wouldn't have made this latest incarnation of it had it not been for his blessing, connections and involvement. Removing him would be like deposing the Queen.

Besides which he's great for the odd cheeky comment he comes out with. I liked the reference about "being so close you couldn't get a sliver of Bronco between them" the other week. Priceless.

Bronco was, with Izal, a brand of hard, tissue-paper type toilet roll which you used to get before the soft stuff like Andrex came along. By my time in the 50s/60s it was still commonly used in schools and public toilets

Did I miss something on tonight's show or did they miss out Len from the Judge's comments after the naughty Anton DuBeke's dance tonight?
I got the impression Bruce was annoyed at the press reaction and dropped more than one hint in his comments.
Also, did anybody else think one of the guest Tap Dancers slipped at the end of their bit and hurt his ankle? ( the one on the left of the picture )

Didn't see the dancer slip SFF.

What did you make of Amy Whitehouse's protegee, Diane Blomfield (or similar)? I thought it was a fairly soul-less performance of a good song and Amy's contribution seemed to be just waving her arms about.

But I enjoyed the show and was sorry Lynda Bellingham was voted out. I thought she was very game and better than the other chap in the dance-off. But not much! Wink

I wasn't paying much attention to it all on Saturday, but I did notice the young girl - the Daily Mail thought she was "a sensation" - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1219764/Strictly-speaking-godmother-Amys-star-Dionne-13-outshines-troubled-mentor.html - and wondered who she was.

That's the second time Len has used his casting vote against the majority of the other three. It'll probably be Craig's turn next week.

I am somewhat bemused by the voting between those unfortunate to end up in the 'dance-off'. As I remember after the two pairs had danced again, two judges voted for Lynda Bellingham and the other for the other pair. This looked to me like a 2-1 win for Lynda. They then called on Len to vote and he went for the other one (who'se name escapes me) and declared the latter the winner! Surely that was a draw - two spots under both couples pictures! Question

Len as the head and senior judge and technical expert has a weighted vote in the event of a tie, so at 2-2 whoever he voted to save is saved.

Rockit Ron, I think the series you're referring to is 'In At The Deep End', where Paul Heiney and Chris Searle did things that were new to them.

I still remember Paul Heiney's attempt at being a pantomime dame, where he sang new words to 'Friends & Neighbours', which began 'When you've got friends and neighbours who think they are better than you/Friends and neighbours, who would be better off in a zoo...'

Jamie Cullum's Portishead-styled version of If I Ruled The World suggests he's been watching Bill Bailey's 'Part Troll' DVD, where he performs 'Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah' in the style of Portishead!

I've never been there but I think the big deal is the Ballroom itself.. would it be where Ballroom dancing started or maybe became popliar?
